Capture a website screenshot through a proxy with Selenium
Install Selenium in the Python environment you plan to use:
python -m pip install seleniumReplace proxy.example:8080 with the proxy endpoint provided for your environment, and replace the target URL. Use an endpoint you are authorized to use.

Choose the right wait and capture scope
Wait for the content, not just navigation
driver.get() normally waits for the page’s document ready state to become complete. That does not guarantee that a JavaScript application has finished rendering the element or data you want. Use an explicit wait tied to a meaningful condition, as in the heading example above. Replace the selector with a page-specific element, or wait for a loading indicator to disappear. A fixed sleep is less reliable because it may be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one. Selenium WebDriver documentation
Capture the visible window or one element
driver.save_screenshot("screenshot.png") saves the current window screenshot as a PNG. It is not necessarily a full-page image. The method returns a Boolean; a false result indicates an I/O problem, so provide a writable path and check the return value.

Set up Chrome and the proxy correctly
Browser and driver compatibility
Selenium 4’s Chrome documentation says it is compatible with Chrome version 75 and greater, and that Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions must match. Selenium Manager can handle browser and driver installation in modern Selenium setups; if you manage them yourself, verify compatibility when session creation fails. Selenium Chrome documentation
Proxy modes and provider-specific settings
The code uses ProxyType.MANUAL with an HTTP proxy host and port, matching Selenium’s documented Python pattern. Selenium supports other proxy configurations, including direct and PAC modes; choose the mode required by your network. The generic example does not establish the credential or certificate syntax for a particular proxy provider.

The Chrome Options API marks ignore_local_proxy_environment_variables() as deprecated and recommends configuring a Proxy instance with ProxyType.DIRECT when direct access is required. Selenium Chrome Options Python API
Running on Selenium Grid
For a remote session, pass the browser Options instance when creating the Remote WebDriver session; those options specify the requested browser. The Grid must also be configured to provide the browser and network route you need. Selenium Browser Options documentation

Troubleshoot common failures
- Chrome session will not start: Check that Chrome and ChromeDriver have matching major versions if you manage the driver yourself. Confirm Selenium is installed in the active Python environment; use Selenium Manager where appropriate.
- Proxy connection fails or the destination is unreachable: Verify the host and port, that the endpoint is reachable from the machine or Grid node running Chrome, and that the configured proxy mode matches the provider’s instructions. The sample does not cover every HTTPS, authentication, or certificate setup.
- Screenshot is blank or misses page content: Navigation completion is not the same as application readiness. Wait for the actual target element or for a loading indicator to disappear before capturing.
- Screenshot file is missing: Check the return value from
save_screenshot, use a writable full path, and ensure the process has permission to write there. - Browser remains running after an error: Keep
driver.quit()in afinallyblock so cleanup runs after navigation, wait, or screenshot failures.
