For the part of a webpage visible on screen, press Windows key + Shift + S, select the area, then save the snip or paste it into your report. If you need content below the fold, use Microsoft Edge’s Screenshot or Web Capture feature and choose full-page capture. Both methods use built-in features, so you do not need a new app or a more powerful laptop.
Capture the visible part of a webpage with Snipping Tool
- Open the webpage and arrange it so the relevant content and enough identifying context are visible.
- Press Windows key + Shift + S. Microsoft says this opens the Snipping Tool overlay. Choose a rectangular or other available snip mode, then select the area to capture. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.
- If a Snipping Tool notification or editor appears, open it to review the image. Save it, or copy it and paste it into your document. Windows guidance describes saving as PNG or JPG and copying to the clipboard. Microsoft’s Windows 11 Snipping Tool guide.
- Give the file a clear name and check that it is legible at the size it will appear in the report. Crop irrelevant browser controls if your assignment allows it, but retain enough context to show what the screenshot demonstrates.
Capture an entire webpage, including content below the fold
A normal screen snip only records the area you select; it does not automatically include the rest of a scrolling page. Microsoft Edge’s Screenshot or Web Capture feature can capture a whole webpage beyond the visible screen or a selected area. The precise menu label and availability can vary by Edge version.
- Open the webpage in Microsoft Edge.
- Open Edge’s Screenshot or Web Capture feature from the browser menu or its available browser controls.
- Choose the full-page capture option to include the page below the current viewport, or select an area if you only need part of it.
- Review the result, then save or copy it using the options shown in your Edge version. Check that the captured page is readable and includes the relevant content.
See Microsoft Edge’s Screenshot Tool description for its full-page and selected-area capture capabilities.
Choose the method that matches the screenshot you need
| Method | What it captures | Where the result goes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows key + Shift + S | A selected screen area | Snipping Tool; save the image or copy and paste it | A particular section of the webpage |
| Edge Screenshot or Web Capture, full-page | The scrolling webpage, including content below the screen | Review and save or copy using the available Edge controls | A long page that cannot fit in one screen |
| Windows key + PrtScn | The full screen | PicturesScreenshots | When the browser and surrounding desktop context matter |
| Alt + PrtScn | The active window | Clipboard; paste into a document or image app | When you want the browser window without the whole desktop |
Microsoft documents the Windows key + PrtScn and Alt + PrtScn options in its Windows screenshot guide. On some devices without a PrtScn key, Microsoft lists Fn + Windows key + Space as an option; behavior depends on the device’s hardware.

Make the screenshot useful in a project report
- Check legibility at the image’s final size, not only when zoomed in.
- Keep enough page context to identify what the image supports, while removing unrelated material if the assignment permits.
- Check for account names, email addresses, private tabs, or other information that should not appear in the report.
- Follow the project instructions for captions, source attribution, and permitted file formats. A screenshot alone does not guarantee that citation or other assignment requirements are met.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
The Windows shortcut does nothing
Keyboard bindings can differ with Windows version and laptop hardware. Search for Snipping Tool from Start and open it directly. If the laptop has no PrtScn key, try Fn + Windows key + Space if supported by the device.
The screenshot stops at the bottom of the screen
That is expected for a screen or region capture. Use Edge’s full-page Screenshot or Web Capture option to capture the scrolling webpage.

The image is not saved where expected
Windows key + Shift + S opens the snipping overlay; select the notification or editor if it appears, then save the image or paste it into the report. By contrast, Windows key + PrtScn saves a full-screen image in PicturesScreenshots. Alt + PrtScn copies the active window to the clipboard, so paste it into a document or image app to use or save it.
The page is difficult to read in the report
Capture a tighter area around the relevant material or make the image larger in the report. Before submitting, check the actual viewing size and make sure the image still includes enough context.
