To capture JavaScript-rendered content reliably, wait for a page-specific signal—such as the target heading becoming visible or a loading indicator disappearing—then take the screenshot. A navigation milestone such as load, or a quiet network, does not necessarily mean an application has finished rendering the content you need.

Why a page can look loaded before its content is ready

A browser screenshot records the page’s rendered state at the moment of capture. On a JavaScript-heavy site, the initial document can load before the application fetches data, updates the DOM, or reveals the content. Waiting for navigation alone can therefore produce an incomplete image.

Playwright supports navigation wait conditions including commit, domcontentloaded, load, and networkidle, but its documentation advises using web assertions to assess readiness in tests rather than treating network idleness as a universal ready signal. Playwright Page documentation

Choose a readiness condition that matches the screenshot

Condition What it establishes When it helps
domcontentloaded The document has been parsed; this alone does not prove later client-side rendering or data loading has finished. When the needed content is already in the initial document.
load A general document load milestone, but not necessarily completion of subsequent application work. As a navigation milestone before waiting for a more specific signal.
networkidle Playwright defines it as no network connections for at least 500 ms. Only when network quiet is an appropriate signal for that page; it is not a general readiness test.
Selector or application-ready signal An observable condition tied to the content the screenshot must include. Usually the clearest choice: wait for a key heading or content container, for a loading indicator to disappear, or for an app-provided ready marker.
Fixed delay Only that a chosen amount of time has passed. Fallback when the page offers no reliable observable signal; it can be too long on fast runs and too short on slow ones.

The selector and app-ready examples are implementation guidance based on Playwright’s recommendation to assess readiness with assertions; the right signal depends on the site.

Capture a page with Playwright

The example below uses Node.js and Playwright. Replace the URL and selector with the page and visible element that prove the content you need has rendered. It waits for the navigation milestone, then for the target element to become visible before capturing a full-page PNG.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch();
  const page = await browser.newPage({
    viewport: { width: 1440, height: 1000 },
    deviceScaleFactor: 1
  });

  try {
    await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
    await page.locator('main h1').waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 15000 });
    await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

Install Playwright and its browser before running the script: npm install playwright and npx playwright install chromium. If the relevant content is not a heading, use a locator that identifies the actual content container or app-ready marker. The timeout is an example limit, not a guarantee that every page will be ready within that period.

Wait for a loading indicator to disappear

If the page shows a spinner or loading message while data is being fetched, waiting for it to become hidden can be a better signal than waiting for a generic navigation state:

await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.locator('[data-testid="loading"]').waitFor({ state: 'hidden', timeout: 15000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });

Use the selector the site actually exposes. A hidden-state wait is useful only if that indicator accurately tracks the content you intend to capture.

Capture one element instead of the entire page

For a focused capture, wait for the target element and take a locator screenshot:

const card = page.locator('.report-card');
await card.waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 15000 });
await card.screenshot({ path: 'report-card.png' });

Playwright documents page screenshots and screenshot assertions in its Page API. Puppeteer documents both page capture and element capture; its screenshot guide shows navigation with networkidle2, but that example does not establish that network idleness proves a particular application’s content is ready. Other capture and repeatability choices

Set the viewport and scale intentionally

Set the browser context to the viewport, device scale, and browser engine you want represented. These choices affect the output. For repeatable captures, keep them fixed between runs rather than relying on machine defaults.

Use a fixed delay only as a fallback

If the page has no usable selector, loading indicator, or ready marker, a delay can give client-side work more time to complete. It is inherently less reliable: fast runs wait unnecessarily, while slower ones can still outlast the delay. Prefer an observable condition whenever the site provides one.

Use screenshot assertions for visual regression

Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() waits for two consecutive page screenshots to match before comparing with the expected image. That helps avoid comparing during a changing render, but it does not replace a page-specific readiness condition when the expected content itself may not have appeared yet. Playwright visual comparisons

Rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep those conditions consistent when generating and comparing baselines. Playwright visual comparisons

Troubleshoot incomplete or unreliable captures

  • The screenshot misses data loaded after navigation: add a wait for the specific content container, heading, or application-ready marker, rather than relying only on load or domcontentloaded.
  • The script times out waiting for a selector: check that the selector exists on this page and that the content is supposed to appear under the current viewport or application state. Choose a signal that corresponds to the content you need.
  • networkidle never occurs or gives a misleading result: pages with ongoing connections may not become quiet, and a quiet network does not necessarily show that the target content rendered. Use a page-specific signal instead.
  • Captures differ between runs: hold the browser engine, viewport, device scale, operating environment, and headless setting consistent. Visual output can vary when those conditions change.
  • A fixed wait sometimes captures too early: replace it with an observable condition if available. A delay cannot adapt to differences in load time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I wait for JavaScript-rendered content before taking a screenshot?

Wait for an observable signal tied to the content you need, such as a visible heading, content container, or disappeared loading indicator, then capture the page.

Does network idle mean a page has finished rendering?

No. It means the network has been quiet for a defined interval, not that the page’s specific application content is ready.
