For one page, use your browser’s Save or Web Archive command. For a linked site, use HTTrack to create a local mirror, then open its generated index.html without an internet connection. Keep the crawl narrowly scoped, watch the transfer log, and test representative pages before you depend on the copy. Crawler-based mirrors cannot reproduce every modern web app; JavaScript-built URLs, lazy content, streaming media, paywalls, and server-side interactions may be absent.

Choose the right capture method

What you need offline Best approach What to expect
One ordinary page Browser Save Page or Web Archive (.mht where supported) Fastest setup; compatibility and file size vary, especially for single-file archives.
A mostly static documentation site HTTrack recursive mirror Downloads a directory of HTML, images, stylesheets and other permitted files, then rewrites retained links to local paths.
A JavaScript-heavy application Browser-assisted archival or capture workflow Captures content reached after scripts, forms or navigation run; requires an authorized session.
Authenticated material Browser-assisted capture while you are authorized Preserve the documented session or cookies. Do not attempt to bypass access controls.

A mirror is not a magical copy of a server. It is a local directory containing the resources the tool was allowed to fetch. Its size depends on your scope, media and exclusions, not on a universal “website size” number.

Save a single page in your browser

Use the built-in Save command

  1. Open the page while online and wait for the content you need to appear.
  2. Choose your browser’s Save Page (or similarly named) command.
  3. Select a destination and, when offered, choose a complete-page option rather than HTML-only if you need images and styles.
  4. Disconnect from the network and open the saved HTML file to verify text, images and links.

Single-file Web Archive or .mht output can be convenient to move as one file, but browser support, embedded-resource behavior and file size differ. A folder-based save is often easier to inspect and repair.

What browser saving cannot guarantee

  • Content loaded only after scrolling, clicking, signing in or running application code may not be included.
  • Forms, search, comments, video streaming and other server-side features normally need the original service.
  • Relative links can work locally, while external links still require a connection.

Mirror a linked website with HTTrack

HTTrack is designed to copy a website to disk so you can read it offline. The official product page identifies the current release as version 3.50 (09/01/2026). Names and screen labels can differ between its graphical and command-line interfaces, but the workflow is the same.

1. Install the appropriate interface

Install HTTrack for your operating system from its official distribution. Use an account with permission to install software and enough free storage for the projected mirror.

2. Create a project and storage location

  1. Start HTTrack and create a new project name.
  2. Choose a local base directory. The project folder will contain the downloaded tree and the offline entry point.
  3. Make sure the destination is on storage you can later copy to a laptop or USB drive.

3. Enter a starting URL

Provide the site’s starting URL, normally its documentation home or another page that links to the material you need. A start page does not automatically authorize unrelated domains; scope rules decide what is retained.

4. Set boundaries before downloading

Open the scan or options settings before you start. Configure:

Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black
  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  • Host boundaries: keep requests on the intended host unless you explicitly need a named asset host.
  • Path rules: include only the sections required for offline use; exclude account, admin, search and tracking paths.
  • File types: limit large media or downloads when HTML and images are sufficient.
  • Connection limits: use conservative concurrency and bandwidth settings that the site can tolerate.
  • Robots, exclusions and filters: honor the site’s published restrictions and remove calendars, query-string traps or faceted-navigation paths that can generate huge crawls.

Unbounded links, external domains and high-volume media are the main reasons a mirror becomes unexpectedly large. Write down your intended hosts and paths before you press Start; that makes the final log easier to audit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Run the mirror and read the log

Start the project and monitor transfers. The log should show successful files, redirects, excluded URLs and failures. Stop and tighten rules if you see repeated query-string variants, an unexpected host, or rapidly growing media downloads. A failed request is not necessarily fatal, but a pattern of failures usually means the scope or a site dependency needs attention.

6. Open the generated entry point

When the transfer finishes, open the project’s index.html. HTTrack rewrites retained links to local paths, so navigation within the captured scope can work without a network connection.

  2. Open the home page and at least one page from every important section.
  3. Check local images, stylesheets, downloadable documents and internal links.
  4. Try a representative page that uses scrolling or embedded media, and record what is missing.
  5. Copy the complete project directory, not only index.html, to your backup or USB storage.

Understand HTTrack’s limits

JavaScript and lazy loading

HTTrack does not execute JavaScript. URLs built at runtime, content fetched after an interaction and some lazy-loaded assets are therefore invisible to the crawler. A page can look complete in its downloaded HTML while still missing cards, images or navigation that a browser would create later.

Streaming, paywalls and server-side features

Saving HTML does not turn a streaming service into an offline player. Video streams, paywalled material, comments, shopping carts, search, login sessions and other server-side features should not be assumed to work merely because their shell page was downloaded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sessions and authorization

Capture authenticated pages only while you are authorized to view them. A browser-assisted workflow can preserve a permitted session and follow URLs reached through forms or scripts; a crawler-only mirror generally cannot reproduce that runtime state. Treat cookies and downloaded private data as sensitive files.

Make the offline copy portable and reliable

  • Measure, then buy storage: inspect the mirror directory’s actual size after the crawl. There is no universal storage figure.
  • Keep a manifest: save the project name, start URL, date, scope rules and any known missing sections beside the mirror.
  • Use a clean test: test on a device or browser profile with networking disabled, not merely by refreshing while online.
  • Refresh deliberately: rerun the project when the source changes; a mirror is a point-in-time capture.
  • Protect private captures: use encrypted storage where appropriate and delete cookies or credentials from shared media.

Troubleshoot an incomplete or unusable mirror

Symptom Likely cause Fix
index.html opens but images or CSS are missing Resource host or file type was excluded, or the request failed. Read the transfer log, allow the specific host/path or type, rerun, then retest offline.
Links leave the local copy The destination was outside your allowed scope or was intentionally excluded. Add the required path or host only if you are authorized and need it; otherwise record it as online-only.
A page is mostly blank Its content is assembled by JavaScript or requires an API call. Use browser-assisted capture while authorized, or save the rendered page and its required assets through that workflow.
The project grows without finishing Unbounded navigation, query parameters or large media. Stop the run; constrain hosts and paths, exclude query patterns and cap media/file types and connections.
Login works online but not offline Authentication is server-side and the mirror lacks a valid session or backend. Do not treat the mirror as an offline application. Capture permitted reference pages with a session-aware method and keep interactive features online.
A saved .mht is huge or will not open elsewhere Single-file compatibility and embedded resources vary by browser. Try a folder-based save or HTTrack mirror and test with the target browser before distributing it.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server when you need a faithful visual snapshot rather than a browsable recursive mirror. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

For a direct image request, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation and run:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper settings and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, request/resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify switching. It is not a recursive offline website mirror: each request captures a page or document, so use HTTrack when you need local link traversal.

FAQ

Can I browse a mirror from a USB drive?

Yes. Copy the entire project directory, including its generated files and subdirectories, then open its local index.html. Test the drive on the target computer while offline first.

Will HTTrack copy a site’s external links?

Only resources permitted by your host and path rules are retained. External links commonly remain ordinary online links unless you explicitly and lawfully include the required host.

Is an offline copy a substitute for a backup?

No. It is a readable snapshot with possible omissions, not a database, source repository or guaranteed restoration of the original service.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I save a website to view offline?

Save one page with your browser’s complete-page or Web Archive command. For multiple linked pages, create a scoped HTTrack mirror and open its local index.html.

Why is my offline page missing interactive content?

The content may be generated by JavaScript or require a server-side session. Use a browser-assisted, authorized capture for that material; a crawler mirror cannot execute the application.

How much storage will a website mirror need?

There is no universal amount. Scope, images, documents and media determine the total, so measure the completed project directory before transferring it.
