To capture a website error, leave the failed page open and take a screenshot that shows the error message and, when possible, the address bar. Use a browser’s full-page capture if important details continue below the fold; use a device screenshot if a browser toolbar, system dialog, or other on-screen interface matters. Save the original image and send it with the exact URL, capture time and timezone, browser and device, and the steps that led to the error. A screenshot records what appeared on screen; by itself, it does not establish when an outage began, how long it lasted, or what caused it.

Choose the right kind of capture

First decide what the recipient needs to see. A short message such as “503 Service Unavailable” may fit in a visible-area screenshot. A long error page, a stack trace, or explanatory text below the fold calls for a full-page capture. If the problem involves a browser toolbar icon, a browser-generated network error, or a system dialog, include the browser interface with a device-level screenshot rather than relying only on a browser’s page capture.

What you need to show Best fit Important limitation
Error text in the current viewport Visible-area browser capture or device screenshot Check that the URL and full message are readable.
Content extending below the fold Full-page browser capture Moving content may appear differently from the moment you first saw it.
A particular section or element Browser developer-tool element capture It may omit surrounding context, so include a separate full-page or visible capture if needed.
Browser controls or a system dialog Device-level screenshot Browser page-capture tools generally capture page content, not the entire desktop interface.

Capture the error in Firefox

Use Firefox’s built-in screenshot tool

  1. Keep the error page open. On Windows or Linux, press Ctrl+Shift+S; on macOS, press Command+Shift+S. Alternatively, right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot.
  2. Choose the scope that fits the issue: select a region, let Firefox select a page element, capture the visible area, or capture the full page.
  3. Save the image or copy it to the clipboard. Open the saved file and confirm the error, URL context, and any relevant details are legible.

Mozilla’s instructions describe the downloaded image as including a date/time and page title in its filename. Do not treat that filename as a complete incident timestamp: record the time and timezone separately if they matter to your report. (Mozilla Support: Take screenshots in Firefox.)

Use Firefox Developer Tools for a delay or a specific element

Firefox Developer Tools’ screenshot helper can capture a full page or an individual element. It also supports a delay, a device-pixel ratio, and a chosen filename; use a delay when you need a menu or hover state to appear before capture. Its --fullpage option requests a full-page image. Choose a new filename for each attempt: Mozilla warns that saving to the same filename overwrites the earlier image. See Firefox Developer Tools Web Console helpers for the documented helper details.

Capture the error in Microsoft Edge

Microsoft documents an Edge Screenshot feature that can capture a full page or selected area, then let you add markup before saving or copying. The documented shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+S. Microsoft notes that availability and functionality can vary by device, market, and browser version, so the feature or shortcut may not behave the same for every Edge user.

  1. Open the error page and invoke Screenshot using the available Edge control or the documented shortcut.
  2. Select the area or full-page option that captures the relevant information.
  3. Save a clean original. If highlighting or markup will help support staff, make a separate annotated copy instead of changing the original.

See Microsoft’s Microsoft Edge support for product guidance.

Take a device screenshot on Android or Chromebook

Android

Open the site in the browser. Google’s support instructions say to hold the Power button for a few seconds and tap Screenshot; if that does not work, press Power and Volume Down together. Device controls can vary, so consult the device maker’s instructions if neither method applies.

Google’s guidance points readers to separate Microsoft and Apple support pages for Windows and macOS capture instructions rather than specifying those controls itself. Therefore, use your device’s current built-in capture controls for those systems rather than assuming a shortcut from another device applies. These Android and Chromebook steps come from Google AdSense Help.

Make the screenshot useful to support

A screenshot is most helpful when someone can identify the page and understand what was visible when the problem occurred. Before sending it, check that the URL or address bar is included where possible, the complete error text can be read, and relevant browser context is visible. If the issue is an extension or browser control, keep the relevant toolbar icon in frame. If you photograph a screen with a phone or tablet camera, Adblock Plus advises checking that the image is clear, free of glare, and large enough to read (see Adblock Plus).

Send a concise incident note

Attach the image with a short explanation. Google advises explaining the issue and what you were doing when it happened. Include these details when available:

Know what a screenshot can and cannot establish

A screenshot is a visual troubleshooting artifact: it helps a support team see what appeared on your screen. The support guidance cited here does not establish a screenshot alone as authenticated proof of an outage’s start time, duration, server-side cause, or lack of later alteration. For recurring or consequential downtime, pair the image with contemporaneous notes or monitoring records where available. Describe what the image shows, rather than treating it as proof of a cause you cannot observe from the page.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot of a URL that a remote browser can load, ScreenshotNeo can return an image with one GET request. This is useful for capturing a page response, but a remote capture cannot include your local browser toolbar or a system dialog. It also cannot show a browser-internal error page that exists only on your device. For those cases, use the local browser or device steps above.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. Before capture, it accepts cookie/consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. That cleanup is useful for ordinary page captures, but if the banner or popup itself is the subject of the incident, disable the corresponding removal behavior so it remains visible. ScreenshotNeo reports whether a response was a page verdict, and only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client.

Replace the example URL with the page you want to capture; retain the actual failed URL when reporting the issue.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options. The API supports PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output and options including full-page capture, CSS-selector element capture, viewport and device settings, custom CSS or JavaScript, waits, request blocking, and caching. A page that fails before a screenshot can be produced may yield a failure verdict rather than a visual copy of a browser-native error; keep a local screenshot for evidence of what your own browser displayed.

Troubleshoot a missing or unhelpful capture

  • The error disappeared before capture: reproduce the steps only if doing so is safe, then capture promptly. If it is intermittent, write down when it appeared and what you were doing while the details are fresh.
  • The URL or browser context is missing: take a device-level screenshot that includes the address bar, or make a second capture of the browser interface. Browser page captures focus on webpage content.
  • The screenshot cuts off relevant content: use a full-page option in Firefox or Edge where available, or capture the additional section separately. Check the final file rather than assuming the selected mode included everything.
  • A menu or hover state is absent: use Firefox Developer Tools’ delay option, or capture the state with a device screenshot once it is visible.
  • Your earlier image was replaced: save each attempt under a distinct filename; Firefox Developer Tools overwrites a file when the same filename is reused.
  • The image is hard to read: recapture at a larger scale or use a direct screenshot instead of a camera photo. For a camera photo, avoid glare and ensure the display is sharp and large enough.
  • A browser or device shortcut does nothing: browser and device versions differ. Check the current feature menu and the device maker’s support instructions; Microsoft explicitly notes Edge Screenshot behavior can vary by device, market, and version.

Frequently asked questions

Should I send a screenshot or copy the error text?

Send the screenshot with the exact URL and a short incident note. Include the error text separately if the image makes it difficult to read or copy.

Should I annotate the image?

Only if highlighting will help explain the issue. Preserve an unmarked original and make annotations on a separate copy.
