To capture a website after login, sign in normally, open the page you need, then use your browser’s screenshot tool for a one-off image. For repeatable captures, use Playwright with a saved authenticated browser state; that lets an automation script reopen the protected page without repeating the login flow each time, as long as the site’s session remains valid.
Choose the capture method that fits the job
| Method | Best for | What it captures | Login handling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Firefox Developer Tools | A one-off capture without writing code | Entire page or one selected element | Sign in in Firefox first; capture the authenticated page |
| Playwright | Repeatable screenshots and automated workflows | Viewport, full page, or a locator/element | Sign in interactively once, save reusable browser state, then load it in later runs |
| Playwright MCP or CLI | Captures initiated through an MCP client or command-line workflow | Target element or selector; full-page capture; PNG, JPEG, or WebP | Use an authenticated browser context where supported |
| Puppeteer | Projects already automating Chrome or Firefox with Puppeteer | Page screenshots and other browser automation outputs | Automate login or reuse the browser session in your existing workflow |
A full-page screenshot includes the complete scrollable document; an element screenshot isolates one DOM element. The right choice depends on whether you need a quick record of what is on screen, the entire report or article, or a specific panel such as a chart or table. Playwright documents these screenshot scopes.
Capture a logged-in page manually in Firefox
- Open Firefox and sign in to the website, completing any required multi-factor authentication (MFA), consent prompts, or device verification.
- Navigate to the protected page and wait for the content you need—including charts, images, and expandable or lazy-loaded sections—to appear.
- Open Firefox Developer Tools and go to Settings → Available Toolbox Buttons. Enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Use the screenshot button to save the full page. Firefox saves the capture to Downloads.
- For a single component instead, open the Inspector, right-click the relevant node, and choose Screenshot Node.
The labels and setup steps above are documented in Mozilla’s Firefox screenshot documentation. Check the saved image: fixed or sticky headers can overlap content, lazy-loaded sections may still be blank, and banners may obscure part of the page.
Automate screenshots with Playwright
Playwright can save a screenshot to a file or return the image as a buffer for post-processing. Use fullPage: true when you want the whole scrollable document. For a viewport-only image, omit that option. For a focused capture, target an element locator and take its screenshot.

The example below assumes a site with a sign-in button and form fields that can be addressed by accessible labels. Replace the example URLs, labels, and selectors with those used by the site you are authorized to access.
One-time interactive login and state save
// save-auth.js
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: false });
const context = await browser.newContext();
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com/login');
// Complete the site's real login flow, including MFA if prompted.
await page.getByLabel('Email').fill(process.env.SITE_EMAIL);
await page.getByLabel('Password').fill(process.env.SITE_PASSWORD);
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Sign in' }).click();
// Wait for a reliable post-login indicator before saving state.
await page.getByRole('navigation').waitFor();
await context.storageState({ path: 'auth-state.json' });
await browser.close();
})();
If the site requires an authenticator code, a passkey, a CAPTCHA, a device approval, or other human interaction, complete it in the visible browser. Do not try to bypass the site’s security checks. Confirm that login succeeded before saving state; otherwise the file may simply preserve a logged-out session.

Reuse saved state to capture a protected page
// capture.js
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const context = await browser.newContext({ storageState: 'auth-state.json' });
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com/protected-page', {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded'
});
await page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Account overview' }).waitFor();
await page.screenshot({ path: 'protected-page.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
})();
Run the setup and capture scripts with the site’s credentials supplied as environment variables rather than placing passwords in source code. For example, in a Unix-like shell, run SITE_EMAIL='you@example.com' SITE_PASSWORD='your-password' node save-auth.js. The exact login controls and the post-login indicator are site-specific; a stable heading, navigation item, or account element is generally a better wait target than an arbitrary short delay.

Playwright’s authentication guide explains that web apps can keep authentication in cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, or passkeys. Its storageState workflow saves reusable state and lets a later browser context load it. The guide also states: “Session storage is specific to a particular domain and is not persisted across page loads.” A site that relies on session storage alone may therefore require another login step or a site-specific setup instead of the saved-state pattern above. See Playwright’s authentication documentation.

- Treat the state file like a credential. It may contain cookies or other data that lets someone access your account. Do not commit
auth-state.jsonto Git, publish it as an artifact, or share it in a support ticket. Restrict file permissions and store it only where the capture job needs it. - Expect sessions to expire. If the site revokes or times out the session, recreate the state through the normal login process.
- Keep domains consistent. Authentication data is associated with site origins. Capture the protected page on the expected domain, and use a fresh state file if the site changes its login domain or session setup.
- Do not assume MFA disappears. Saved state can reduce repeated sign-ins, but MFA policies, CAPTCHA challenges, device checks, or session-storage-only authentication can still require an interactive step.
Choose the right screenshot scope and wait strategy
Viewport, full page, or one element
- Viewport: Captures the visible browser area. Use it for a specific screen state or when a long page would be unwieldy.
- Full page: Captures the full scrollable document. Use it for a report, article, or page record; check that sticky elements and lazy content render as intended.
- Element: Captures a chosen DOM element, such as a table, card, form, or chart. This keeps the output focused, but the element must exist and be visible when the capture runs.
Wait for the page you need—not just navigation
A successful navigation does not necessarily mean that the page is ready for a useful image. Authenticated dashboards often populate after the initial document loads. Wait for a heading, table row, chart container, or other meaningful element that indicates the target content is present. For lazy-loaded material, scroll through the page before capturing and verify the lower sections are no longer blank. If a chart renders asynchronously, wait for its visible content or an application-specific ready indicator.
For element capture with Playwright, use the locator screenshot method, for example:

Other browser automation routes
Playwright MCP or CLI
The official Playwright MCP screenshot tool supports a target element or selector, a fullPage setting, PNG/JPEG/WebP output, and CSS-pixel or device-pixel scale. It is useful when an MCP client or command-line workflow already manages the browser. Choose the scale deliberately: device-pixel scale can produce a larger image, while CSS-pixel scale corresponds to the page’s CSS layout. See Playwright MCP Screenshots for the documented options.

Puppeteer
Puppeteer is a reasonable alternative when Chrome or Firefox automation is already part of your stack. Chrome for Developers describes Puppeteer as a library for automating Chrome and Firefox, including page interaction, screenshots, PDF generation, and visual snapshots. See Chrome for Developers’ Puppeteer documentation. For a protected site, the same practical concerns apply: establish a legitimate session, wait for the authenticated page content, and protect any reused state or credentials.

Troubleshooting logged-in captures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The screenshot shows the login page | The saved state was logged out, expired, or not accepted by the target domain | Run the interactive login again, confirm the post-login page before saving state, then capture on the same site origin. |
| A CAPTCHA, MFA prompt, or device-check screen appears | The site requires a fresh human verification or does not accept the reused session | Complete the required step in the legitimate interactive login flow and refresh the saved state. Do not attempt to bypass the check. |
| The page loads but the image is mostly blank | The screenshot ran before client-rendered content, charts, or lazy images were ready | Wait for a content-specific locator, scroll to trigger lazy loading, and capture after the needed regions render. |
| The capture cuts off a table or panel | The chosen scope was the viewport, or the target element had not finished rendering | Use fullPage: true for the full document or capture the intended element after it becomes visible. |
| Cookie consent covers content | The website has not yet recorded the consent choice in that browser context | Complete the consent prompt during setup or capture; ensure the saved state includes the resulting session data if the site stores it there. |
auth-state.json is missing or unreadable |
The setup script did not finish, the path differs, or file access is restricted | Run the login setup to completion, confirm the file path, and ensure the capture process can read the file without exposing it to others. |
| An element screenshot fails to find its selector | The selector is wrong, the page changed, or the element has not appeared yet | Inspect the authenticated page, update the selector, and wait for that locator to become visible before capture. |
Preserve evidence and avoid leaking sensitive data
A screenshot is a static copy of whatever the browser displays, not proof by itself that the page was genuine or current. When the image will support an audit, support request, or internal record, save it with a descriptive filename and record the page URL and capture time separately. Before sharing, inspect the output for personal data, account identifiers, hidden-but-visible secrets, and unrelated browser content. If the screenshot must preserve an exact state, note whether it was viewport-only, full-page, or an element capture and whether the site had finished loading.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture a logged-in page without signing in again every time?
Often, yes. Playwright can reload saved authentication state, but expired sessions, MFA, CAPTCHA, device checks, or session-storage-only authentication can require another interactive login.
Does a full-page screenshot include content that has not loaded yet?
No. Wait for the page’s content and trigger lazy-loaded sections before capture, then inspect the image for blank regions.
