To capture a page protected by HTTP Basic Authentication, use a screenshot API that accepts the target site’s username and password in a documented authentication field. Cloudflare Browser Run supports this with an authenticate object on its screenshot endpoint. If you want to run the browser yourself, configure Playwright’s httpCredentials on a browser context before navigating to the page.
First check what kind of login protects the page: an HTTP Basic Authentication challenge is different from a website’s HTML login form. Basic Auth credentials will not, by themselves, sign in through an application form.
Use Cloudflare Browser Run for a hosted screenshot
Cloudflare’s screenshot endpoint accepts a page URL and target-site credentials in the JSON request body. The Cloudflare API token authorizes your request to Cloudflare; it is separate from the username and password that unlock the target page. The endpoint also documents screenshot and viewport options, navigation settings through gotoOptions, and selector waits. For pages that render content asynchronously, wait for a meaningful selector or suitable rendering state rather than assuming that the initial navigation event means the page is ready. After the request, inspect the image and any available response status information: a completed capture can still show a challenge, login prompt, or error instead of the intended content.
Run the capture yourself with Playwright
When you manage the browser runtime, set HTTP credentials on the browser context before opening the page. Playwright documents httpCredentials for browser.newContext() and page.screenshot() for saving the rendered page. This example uses Chromium and saves a full-page image:

For a JavaScript-heavy page, add an explicit wait for an application-specific selector before the screenshot; the right selector depends on the target page. Choose the right authentication method
- HTTP Basic Authentication: The server challenges the browser for a username and password. Use the API’s documented authentication field or Playwright’s context-level
httpCredentials. - Application login form: A page displays fields and a sign-in button. The browser must complete the site’s login flow; HTTP credentials alone are not established as a solution.
- Session cookie: The page requires an existing authenticated session. Cloudflare documents cookies as a separate access method, so use the session mechanism the target requires rather than treating it as Basic Auth.
Protect credentials in transit and at rest
Use HTTPS to the protected site. RFC 7617 explains that Basic Authentication is not considered secure unless used with an external secure system such as TLS: the username and password are otherwise passed over the network as cleartext. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. Read the RFC 7617 security considerations.
- Keep the provider API token separate from the target site’s credentials, and put each only in its documented header or field.
- Do not place the target username or password in the URL.
- Avoid printing secrets in logs, shell history, or committed scripts; inject them at runtime using your organization’s secret-handling process.
Troubleshoot an incorrect or incomplete capture

Does Basic Authentication work when the protected page redirects to another URL?
Check the final page state in the screenshot. The documented flows establish credentials for HTTP authentication, but do not establish how credentials behave across every target’s redirects or authentication configuration.

Can I use this approach for a page that requires multi-factor authentication?
The cited Basic Auth examples do not establish a multi-factor application login flow. Use the authentication process supported by the target site rather than assuming HTTP credentials are sufficient.
