Give the AI agent a browser it can operate, use Playwright or an equivalent tool to capture the page, then upload the image to Slack with Slack’s external file upload flow. The model does not capture a page by itself: your application must provide a browser runtime or an agent-facing browser tool and pass its observations back to the agent.
How the workflow fits together
There are two distinct jobs: capture a page in a browser, then deliver the resulting image to Slack. The agent can choose the URL and capture mode, but browser actions must run in an execution environment. OpenAI’s computer-use documentation describes a tool-mediated interaction pattern rather than a browser built into every model: Computer use.
- Provide browser execution. Run Playwright in your application or expose browser actions through an agent tool.
- Choose a capture scope. Save the viewport, a particular element, or the full scrollable page.
- Upload the image. Request a Slack upload URL, POST the bytes, and complete the upload to share it in a conversation.
- Verify the result. Check browser and Slack responses, and handle errors rather than assuming a screenshot or message succeeded.
Capture the page with Playwright
Playwright’s Page API supports navigation and screenshots. This Node.js example captures a full-page PNG to a local file. Install Playwright and its browser first, then run it in an environment allowed to access the target site.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const url = 'https://example.com';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle', timeout: 30000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true, type: 'png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
The navigation wait is a choice, not a guarantee that every page is fully rendered: sites with long-running network activity can prevent a network-idle condition. If that happens, use a suitable wait condition for the site, such as waiting for a specific selector or for a short delay after navigation, rather than indefinitely retrying. Playwright’s documented capture method and options are in its Page API.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Choose the capture scope
- Viewport: use the default screenshot when you want what is visible in the current browser window.
- Element: locate a specific chart, card, form, or other region and screenshot that locator. This keeps unrelated page content out of the image.
- Full page: set
fullPage: truewhen content below the fold matters. Lazy-loaded images may need scrolling or additional waits before capture.
For example, replace the screenshot call with await page.locator('.chart').screenshot({ path: 'chart.png' }); to capture one element, using a selector that exists on the target page.
Control image type and resolution
Playwright’s Page API supports PNG and JPEG screenshots; its CLI documentation also describes screenshot output options, including image type and device-scale capture. Use CSS-pixel output for a smaller image when standard resolution is sufficient. Device-scale output captures more pixels on high-density displays and can improve fine detail at the cost of a larger file. PNG is a practical default for text and interface elements; JPEG can reduce file size for photographic pages. Consult Playwright screenshots and PDF documentation for the CLI’s options.

Upload the screenshot to Slack
For new integrations, use Slack’s external upload sequence, not the legacy files.upload method. Slack documents the current process as requesting an upload URL, transferring the bytes to that URL, and completing the upload: Working with files.

- Request an upload URL. Call
files.getUploadURLExternalwith a filename and the image’s byte length. Keep the returned file ID and upload URL. - Send the bytes. POST the raw file bytes to the returned URL using the image’s content type. Check the HTTP response status.
- Complete and share. Call
files.completeUploadExternalwith the file ID and destinationchannel_id. Addinitial_commentif the image needs an accompanying note. Omitting a destination leaves the file uploaded privately instead of sharing it in a conversation. - Check Slack’s result. Confirm the API response reports
ok: true; handle API errors and unsuccessful transfers explicitly.
Slack states that files.upload was deprecated and officially sunset on November 12, 2025. Do not build a new workflow around it; see Slack’s files.upload method reference.
Separate notification versus upload comment
If the screenshot itself is the notification, use initial_comment during completion rather than sending a second message. If the workflow needs a distinct message, call chat.postMessage with the target channel and a token carrying chat:write. Use channel IDs where possible and verify that the app can access the destination. New apps do not automatically have permission to post in every public channel; Slack documents chat:write.public for that broader access. See chat.postMessage.

Messages using blocks should also include useful top-level fallback text for screen readers and other clients. If a separate notification is unnecessary, the upload comment is simpler.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGive an AI agent control without handing it a browser blindly
In an agent-driven design, the host application should expose a limited set of browser operations, execute them, and return observations such as page text, status, or a screenshot. The agent can then decide whether to capture the viewport, a region, or the full page. Direct Playwright calls provide explicit control; an agent-facing browser tool can expose operations in a structured interface. Neither approach removes the need for an execution environment.

Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return an image or PDF, which avoids setting up and maintaining your own browser capture step. Its capture options include viewport or full-page shots, CSS-selector element capture, image formats, custom waits and CSS, and other controls. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Protect screenshot data
A screenshot can contain personal, customer, or account information visible in the browser. Decide who can access the destination Slack channel and any stored image, limit application logs that might capture the image or its contents, and mask sensitive interface regions when appropriate. Treat the screenshot as data from the page, not as a harmless artifact.
Troubleshooting
- The agent cannot open the page: provide an actual browser runtime or browser tool and make sure the host can reach the URL. A language model alone does not perform browser navigation.
- The screenshot is blank or missing dynamic content: wait for a meaningful page selector or content-specific condition before capturing. For lazy-loaded sections, scroll them into view and wait for rendering.
- The capture is too large or too small: use viewport capture instead of full-page for a shorter image, or adjust the viewport and device scale. More captured pixels generally mean larger files.
- The Slack upload URL request fails: check that the app token is valid and authorized for the method, and that filename and byte length match the file you intend to send.
- The byte transfer fails: check the POST status, send the raw bytes to the returned upload URL, and use the matching content type. Do not treat a failed transfer as a completed upload.
- The upload succeeds but nobody sees it: complete the upload with the intended channel ID. Without a channel destination, Slack keeps the file private rather than sharing it to a conversation.
- A separate Slack message is rejected: verify the channel ID, app access to that channel, and the token’s
chat:writescope; public-channel posting by a new app may requirechat:write.public.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI model take a screenshot without browser access?
No. The application must run browser actions or expose a browser tool; the model can decide what to request and interpret returned observations.
Should I send a screenshot as a file or a Slack message?
Share the image with an initial upload comment when it is the notification. Use chat.postMessage as well only when a distinct message is needed.
