For a searchable, document-style PDF, open the page, press Ctrl+P (Windows/Linux) or Command+P (Mac), choose the browser’s PDF destination (Save as PDF in Chrome, Save to PDF in Firefox), review the preview, and save. For a visual record that preserves the page’s screen appearance, use Edge’s Capture full page or Firefox’s Save full page. Developers who need repeatable captures can use Chrome Headless with --screenshot or --print-to-pdf.
Choose the right kind of PDF first
“Screenshot as a PDF” can mean two different outputs:
- Print PDF: the browser lays out the page as paginated paper. Text is usually selectable and searchable, but columns, menus, animations, and responsive elements may reflow or disappear.
- Visual full-page PDF: you capture the rendered page as one long image, then place that image in a PDF. The appearance matches the screen more closely, but text may not be selectable and very long pages can become difficult to read.
Use print-to-PDF for articles, invoices, receipts, and records you will search or print. Use a full-page screenshot when visual fidelity, design review, or an evidence snapshot matters more than selectable text.
Google Chrome: save a webpage as a PDF
- Open the webpage and wait for its main content to finish loading.
- Open Chrome’s print dialog with Ctrl+P on Windows/Linux or Command+P on macOS. You can also open Chrome’s menu and choose Print.
- In Destination, select Save as PDF. Google’s help instruction is simply “Click Save as PDF.”
- Check the preview. Expand More settings to adjust paper size, orientation, margins, scale, headers and footers, and background graphics.
- Click Save, choose a folder and filename, and confirm.
Chrome’s print renderer creates a paginated document, not a pixel-for-pixel screenshot. If a chart, background color, or hero image is missing, enable Background graphics and inspect the preview again. For content that appears only after scrolling, scroll through the page once before printing so lazy-loaded sections have a chance to render.

Microsoft Edge: capture the entire page or print it
Full-page screenshot
- Open the page in Edge.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+S, or open Edge’s Screenshot feature from the browser toolbar/menu.
- Choose Capture full page. Edge describes this as capturing “an entire webpage in a single screenshot—even content that extends beyond your screen.”
- Review the overlay. You can add pen or touch markup, then copy the result or save it.
This produces an image. To deliver a PDF, open the saved image in an image viewer or editor and print it to your operating system’s PDF printer, or insert it into a document and export that document as PDF. A very tall image may be scaled down substantially on a single sheet; use multiple pages when readability matters.
Print to PDF in Edge
- Open Settings and more (the three-dot menu) and choose Print, or press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS.
- Choose the available PDF destination, review orientation, margins, scale, and background graphics, then save.
Mozilla Firefox: save a full-page screenshot
Save the page as an image
- Right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot, or press Ctrl+Shift+S (Windows/Linux) or Command+Shift+S (macOS).
- Select Save full page for the complete scrollable page. Save visible captures only the current viewport; Firefox also offers a selected region and an automatically detected page part.
- Save the resulting image.
Save a print PDF
- Open Firefox’s Print command.
- In the Destination drop-down, select Save to PDF.
- Inspect the preview and save. Mozilla’s support guidance says to select Save to PDF in the drop-down to save the shown preview.
Firefox Developer Tools provide another full-page route. Enable the screenshot button in the developer-tools toolbar and use it to capture the page; Firefox includes content outside the current window bounds. This is useful when the context-menu command is unavailable or you already work in Developer Tools.
Chrome Headless: automate screenshots and PDFs
Chrome’s command-line Headless mode is suited to regression tests, scheduled archives, and batches. It requires a command-line installation of Chrome or Chromium and a writable output directory.
Capture a screenshot
chrome --headless --screenshot=page.png https://example.com
The --screenshot flag writes an image of the target page. To allow a slow page or client-side app to finish loading, add a timeout in milliseconds:

chrome --headless --timeout=10000 --screenshot=page.png https://example.com
Write a PDF directly
chrome --headless --print-to-pdf=page.pdf https://example.com
Use the same timeout option when content is asynchronous:
chrome --headless --timeout=15000 --print-to-pdf=page.pdf https://example.com
Headless output is repeatable, but it is still subject to the page’s scripts, authentication state, cookie banners, network conditions, and responsive breakpoints. For authenticated pages, run Chrome with an appropriate profile or automation framework that supplies the session; do not put passwords or session cookies in shell history.
Settings that determine what appears in the PDF
Scale, paper, orientation, and margins
- Scale: reduce it when headings wrap badly or a table is clipped; increase it only when the preview has excessive whitespace.
- Orientation: landscape is often more legible for wide tables and dashboards.
- Margins: narrow margins increase usable width, while wider margins leave room for binding or notes.
- Paper size: choose the size your readers will actually print (for example, Letter or A4) rather than assuming the browser default.
- Page ranges: print only the relevant pages when a long article contains navigation, comments, or unrelated sections.
Backgrounds, headers, and footers
Enable background graphics when color-coded sections, logos, or shaded table cells carry meaning. Disable browser headers and footers when you need a clean reproduction; leave them enabled when the URL, title, or capture date is part of the record.
Dynamic and lazy-loaded content
Wait for videos, charts, and images to finish loading before capture. On pages that load content as you scroll, scroll through the entire page first, then reopen the print preview or full-page tool. A full-page screenshot and a print PDF can legitimately differ because they use different rendering paths.

When a screenshot image must become a PDF
- Capture the full page with Edge or Firefox and save the image at its native size.
- Open the image in an editor or image viewer that has a Print command.
- Select your system’s PDF printer (such as “Microsoft Print to PDF” on Windows or “Save as PDF” in macOS’s print dialog).
- Choose portrait or landscape and a fit option that keeps text readable. For an exceptionally tall page, use a multi-page poster or tiled layout instead of shrinking everything onto one sheet.
- Save and reopen the PDF to verify that every section is present and that no important text is clipped.
This workflow embeds a raster image. Optical character recognition can add a searchable text layer, but OCR accuracy depends on font size, contrast, and the language of the page.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed.
For a PDF, pass the PDF options described in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. The basic request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
To request a PDF, add the PDF format and any paper, margin, orientation, or page-range parameters supported by the documentation. The same endpoint works from Python:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsimport requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${res.status}`);
const data = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
require('node:fs').writeFileSync('shot.webp', data);
ScreenshotNeo also supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, click and wait actions, ad/tracker/request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable cache TTLs, signed public image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Its parameter names are compatible with those used by other screenshot APIs, which can simplify migration.
The MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients, so an AI agent can request a PDF without you wiring browser automation. Plans include 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card, Starter at $5 for 3,000, Growth at $15 for 15,000, Pro at $39 for 60,000, Scale at $99 for 250,000, and Business at $249 for 1,000,000; yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is on every plan. Troubleshooting missing or incorrect content
The PDF stops before the bottom of the page
- Use the browser’s full-page screenshot command instead of a visible-viewport capture.
- Scroll through the page to trigger lazy loading, then capture again.
- In Headless Chrome, increase
--timeoutand confirm the command is writing to a location you can access.
Images or colored sections are blank
- Enable Background graphics in print settings.
- Wait for images to finish loading and check for a consent dialog covering the page.
- If the site blocks automated browsers, try an interactive browser capture or an API that reports bot-check failures rather than returning a misleading blank file.
The layout is cut off or unreadable
- Switch to landscape, reduce scale slightly, or choose a larger paper size.
- For a screenshot image, do not force an extremely tall page onto one sheet; use multiple PDF pages.
- Hide sticky navigation, chat controls, or cookie elements before printing when the page provides a dismiss control.
The PDF looks different from the screen
Print and screenshot paths are different renderers. Print can reflow responsive layouts and omit interactive behavior, while a screenshot records one viewport at one moment. Choose the path that matches your evidence requirement and compare the preview before saving.
A protected or personalized page will not capture
Sign in interactively, use a session-aware automation profile, or provide authorized headers/cookies through a service designed for them. Never expose credentials in a URL, command history, client-side code, or a public signed link.
