To capture a webpage without its cookie banner, have the AI agent inspect the page, locate and intentionally choose the site’s consent control, verify the overlay is gone, and then take the screenshot. Treat consent interaction and screenshot capture as separate steps: banner buttons vary by site, so do not assume a universal selector or equate dismissing a banner with accepting cookies.
How do I take a screenshot after dismissing a cookie banner?
- Open the target page and inspect it. Use your browser agent’s accessibility snapshot or page snapshot to see the current page structure and available controls. A snapshot is useful for interaction; use a screenshot when you need visual inspection. Playwright MCP explains the distinction.
- Find the site’s actual consent control. Use the observed button text or other page evidence to identify the intended control. Cookie banners do not share a universal selector; a generic selector copied from another site may click the wrong thing or nothing at all. Browserless’s example illustrates why selectors need to be adapted to the target.
- Choose the intended consent action. If the banner offers accept, reject, or preference-management options, select the one appropriate to the task. “Dismiss” describes removing the overlay, not which consent choice to make.
- Verify the overlay has disappeared. Wait for the banner or dialog to become hidden, then inspect the page again if needed. Playwright recommends explicitly waiting for and dismissing a predictable overlay as part of the normal flow, rather than relying on an automatic locator handler. See the Playwright Page API.
- Capture the required scope. Take a viewport screenshot for the visible screen, an element screenshot for a specific component, or a full-page screenshot for the scrollable page. Playwright MCP documents these capture options at its screenshot tools page.
With Playwright, an explicit wait-and-dismiss flow can be written like this. Replace the example URL, button label, and banner selector with controls observed on the actual page; this generic example is not a universal cookie-banner detector.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage();
try {
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
// Inspect the current page before choosing a site-specific control.
console.log((await page.locator('body').innerText()).slice(0, 4000));
// Adapt the label and selector to the observed consent UI and intended choice.
const consentButton = page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Reject optional cookies', exact: true });
await consentButton.waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 10000 });
await consentButton.click();
// Adapt this selector to the banner or dialog present on the target site.
await page.locator('[role="dialog"]').waitFor({ state: 'hidden', timeout: 10000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
The example uses Playwright’s page navigation, locator, and screenshot APIs; consult the Playwright screenshots guide for viewport, full-page, buffer, and element capture examples. For banners inside a frame, use frame-aware locators to inspect and interact with the frame rather than querying only the top-level page; the Page API documents page and frame interaction.
How to make the interaction reliable
Use fresh page evidence
Pages can change after navigation, consent interaction, or a failed click. If the action does not work, take a new snapshot, check which controls are currently visible, and generate or select a fresh locator before retrying. Playwright’s agent CLI capabilities include snapshots and locator generation.
Wait for the specific overlay
Waiting for a known banner or dialog to disappear is more precise than adding an arbitrary delay. If the site replaces its banner with a preferences panel, inspect that new state and complete the intended action before capturing. Do not take the screenshot until the relevant overlay is actually gone.
Choose capture scope deliberately
- Viewport: captures what is currently visible in the browser viewport.
- Element: captures a selected component, useful when the rest of the page is irrelevant.
- Full page: captures the scrollable page rather than only the current viewport.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its capture flow can accept cookie and consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before taking the shot; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses report the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server gives AI agents the tools take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
One GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, with cURL:

Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The click times out or does nothing | The locator does not match the current page, the control is not visible, or the page changed. | Take a fresh snapshot, identify the visible control and its accessible name, then retry with a new locator. |
| The banner remains after the click | The action opened preferences, the wrong control was clicked, or the banner is in a frame. | Inspect the updated page state, complete the intended choice, and use a frame-aware locator if the controls are embedded in an iframe. |
| The screenshot still contains the overlay | The capture began before the overlay finished closing or the wait targeted the wrong element. | Wait for the actual banner or dialog to become hidden and verify the page state before capturing. |
| The screenshot is missing lower content | A viewport capture was used where full-page output was needed. | Choose full-page capture; use an element capture instead when only a specific component is required. |
Local browser automation or a hosted browser?
A local Playwright setup gives you direct control over browser launch, page interaction, and capture behavior. A hosted browser service can be useful when you want a managed browser connection for an agent or need to run captures outside a developer workstation; Browserless publishes a cookie-consent workflow example at its documentation site. Which deployment fits depends on your infrastructure and operational needs. The available guidance does not establish comparable pricing, latency, reliability, or service-level performance across these approaches, so check current provider terms before choosing one.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does dismissing a cookie banner mean I have accepted cookies?
No. The action should match the consent choice you intend to make; dismissing the overlay alone does not establish that you accepted.
