In Chrome DevTools, use Device mode > More options to capture either the visible viewport or the full page. To save just one component, select it in the Elements panel and run Capture node screenshot from the Command Menu. To capture a rectangle, use Inspect Element Mode with the platform-specific modifier key. For screenshots tied to page loading or a performance recording, use the Network or Performance panel instead.

Choose the capture method that matches what you need

Your goal DevTools method What it captures
Save what is currently visible Device mode > More options > Capture screenshot The visible emulated viewport.
Include content below the fold Device mode > More options > Capture a full size screenshot The page beyond the visible viewport.
Save one component, such as a card or header Select the element in Elements, then Command Menu > Capture node screenshot The selected DOM node.
Save a rectangle you choose Inspect Element Mode, then use the platform modifier while selecting the area The chosen portion of the viewport.
See visuals as the page loads Network panel settings > Capture screenshots, then reload Thumbnails associated with loading activity.
Pair visuals with a performance trace Performance panel > Screenshots, then record Frames captured during the recording.

The first four methods are for saving a particular view or region. Network and Performance screenshots are for examining changes over time rather than replacing a single static capture. Chrome’s DevTools screenshot overview was last updated on 2024-08-09 UTC.

Capture the visible viewport or full page

Use Device mode for the ordinary screenshot workflow. The menu distinguishes the current viewport from the page’s full size, so choose based on whether you need only what is on screen or also the content outside it. The menu labels below are documented in Chrome’s Device mode guide.

  1. Open Chrome DevTools. If Device mode is not active, enable it.
  2. In the Device mode toolbar, open More options.
  3. Choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport, or choose Capture a full size screenshot to include off-screen page content.
  4. Find the downloaded image and check that it contains the intended content and dimensions.

Show a device frame

If you want the emulated device outline around the page, turn on Show device frame before capturing. It is a presentation option for an emulated-device screenshot; it is not needed for a plain page capture.

Before taking a full-page capture

Make sure the page is in the state you want represented. If content appears only after interaction or scrolling, bring it into view and allow it to appear before capturing; a screenshot records the rendered state available to DevTools, not the state you intended the page to reach. Very long or dynamically changing pages may need a quick visual check after capture to confirm that the needed sections are present.

Capture a single element

For a chart, product card, header, or other individual component, select its DOM node rather than cropping a full-page image. The documented sequence is to select the element in Elements and invoke Capture node screenshot from the Command Menu. Chrome’s Chrome 62 DevTools announcement describes this interaction; it is a historical source, so exact behavior can vary between current Chrome builds.

  1. Open DevTools and select the Elements panel.
  2. Use the element picker or the DOM tree to select the element you want.
  3. Open the Command Menu, type node, and choose Capture node screenshot.
  4. Check the downloaded image to confirm that the intended node was selected.

Chrome’s historical documentation says node capture can include the full node, including content below the viewport. That detail is useful for tall components, but do not assume every current build or unusual page layout will produce identical results.

Capture a selected rectangular area

Use area capture when you need a crop that is not an entire viewport or one DOM element. The modifier depends on your operating system, as described in the Chrome 62 announcement.

  1. Enter Inspect Element Mode by clicking Inspect, or press Command+Shift+C on Mac or Control+Shift+C on Windows or Linux.
  2. Hold Command on Mac or Control on Windows or Linux, then select the rectangle you want in the viewport.
  3. Release the mouse and check the downloaded capture.

Do not confuse the shortcut for entering Inspect Element Mode with the modifier used while selecting the region: on Mac, both involve Command; on Windows and Linux, both involve Control.

Capture screenshots while a page loads

Use the Network panel when you want a visual sequence associated with loading activity, not just one image. Chrome documents this workflow in its Network features reference.

  1. Open the Network panel and its settings.
  2. Enable Capture screenshots.
  3. Keep the Network panel focused and reload the page.
  4. Use the resulting thumbnails to inspect the loading sequence.

Hovering a thumbnail marks its capture point on the Overview timeline. Clicking a thumbnail filters out requests that occurred after that screenshot; double-clicking zooms the thumbnail. These controls help connect a visible state to the requests active around that point.

This is a reload-based workflow: if you enable the option after the page has already loaded, reload while the Network panel is focused to collect the sequence.

Capture frames during a performance recording

Choose the Performance panel if you want screenshots aligned with a performance trace. In the Performance panel, enable Screenshots before recording. DevTools then captures a screenshot of every frame during the recording, according to the Performance features reference.

  1. Open the Performance panel.
  2. Enable the Screenshots checkbox.
  3. Start and complete a recording of the interaction or page activity you want to inspect.
  4. Review the screenshots alongside the trace to relate visual changes to recorded activity.

This feature is intended for visual analysis alongside performance activity. For a file of one static page state, use Device mode, node capture, or area capture instead.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to capture a URL from code rather than operate DevTools, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Here is a one-request cURL example; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Cookie and consent banners are accepted like a visitor and removed along with supported newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response indicates the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Python

import requests

r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

The examples use https://stripe.com as the target URL; change it to the page you need. Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your API key. The cURL and Python examples write the returned image to a file; the Node.js example makes the request and leaves the response available in res.

Troubleshoot a missing or unexpected screenshot

The image shows only the visible part of the page

You likely chose Capture screenshot, which captures the emulated viewport. Repeat the capture with Capture a full size screenshot if you need content outside that viewport.

The image includes the wrong element

Return to Elements and select the intended node in the DOM tree before running Capture node screenshot. Confirm the selected node in the panel before invoking the command; similarly named nested elements can be easy to confuse.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Area selection does not start

First enter Inspect Element Mode. Then hold the correct modifier while dragging the area: Command on Mac, Control on Windows or Linux. If the platform or keyboard layout differs from your expectation, use the menu’s Inspect control rather than relying on the shortcut.

No loading thumbnails appear in Network

Confirm that Capture screenshots is enabled in Network settings, then reload with the Network panel focused. The thumbnails are associated with loading activity, not retroactively added to an already completed load.

No screenshots appear in the Performance trace

Enable Screenshots in the Performance panel before recording, then make a new recording. The checkbox controls capture during the recording; it does not add frames to an earlier trace.

The menu or labels look different

DevTools labels can change over time. The instructions here follow the current official documentation available on 2026-09-29, but if a label differs in your Chrome build, use the official Device mode, Network, and Performance references linked above to locate the equivalent control.

Reliability and workflow notes

  • Choose the narrowest capture that satisfies the task: a node or region can be easier to inspect than a full-page image when the rest of the page is irrelevant.
  • For page-load investigation, Network thumbnails connect visual states with request timing; for frame-by-frame trace analysis, use Performance screenshots. They answer different questions.
  • Capture the intended page state deliberately. Interactive content, delayed content, and dynamic pages can change while you prepare or capture; inspect the resulting image before sharing or using it as evidence.
  • For repeat captures of many URLs or automation outside an open DevTools session, an API workflow may fit better than repeating the manual browser steps. ScreenshotNeo supports bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call and async jobs with signed webhooks; its documentation describes configuration and response details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Network panel screenshots replace a downloaded page screenshot?

No. They are thumbnails associated with loading activity in the Network panel. Use Device mode or another static capture method when you need a saved image of a chosen state.

Can I use the Performance screenshots feature to inspect one static page?

It is designed to capture frames during a performance recording. For one static capture, use Device mode, node capture, or area capture.
