To capture a page after a cookie banner choice, make the choice through the site’s real consent controls, wait until the banner disappears, then take the screenshot. For repeat runs, save and restore Playwright’s browser storage state. Seed localStorage before the page loads only when you know the site’s exact origin, storage key, and value.
Capture the page after making a real cookie choice
A screenshot records the page as it is rendered at capture time. Dismissing the banner first—and checking that the post-choice page has rendered—is more reliable than taking a screenshot immediately after navigation or writing a guessed value into localStorage.
- Open the target site and wait for its consent interface to appear.
- Use the actual Reject, Accept, or Save choices control appropriate to your test.
- Wait for the banner to become hidden and, if possible, assert another visible post-choice result.

This runnable Playwright example illustrates the flow. Replace the URL, button name, and dialog locator with the target site’s real accessible controls; they are examples, not universal cookie-banner selectors.

await browser.close();A consent manager may save its choice asynchronously. Waiting for a meaningful visible outcome is preferable to sleeping for an arbitrary interval. If the site exposes no dialog with the example role and name, inspect its accessible controls and wait for the actual banner or a page state that confirms the choice took effect.
Reuse the saved choice in later runs
When you need a repeatable later session, make the choice once, save the browser context’s storage state, and pass that state to a later context. Playwright documents storage-state support in its browser context APIs; the pattern is to call context.storageState({ path: 'state.json' }) after the choice, then create a later context with browser.newContext({ storageState: 'state.json' }). Keep the state file private: it can contain session data as well as consent data.
After restoring state, navigate to the same site and verify the banner is absent before capturing. Stored data alone does not prove that the application accepted or rendered the saved choice.
When to seed localStorage before page scripts
Direct seeding can make a controlled test deterministic, but only if you know the site’s real localStorage key and serialized value. The storage belongs to the target site’s origin, so a value set for another origin—or on about:blank—does not automatically apply. Playwright’s Page API documents addInitScript(), which runs after a document is created but before its page scripts run.

await page.goto('https://example.com');Do not treat those placeholder strings as a valid consent format. An assumed key or value can be ignored, overwritten, or interpreted differently by the site. Prefer interacting with the real banner and reusing storage state when fidelity to a user session matters; seed storage when the schema is known and a deliberate test fixture is more useful.
Choose the right screenshot scope
- Viewport:

await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true })captures the full scrollable page, including below-the-fold content. - One element: use a locator or element screenshot when the test concerns a specific component. Playwright’s screenshot methods are documented in the Page API. Puppeteer also supports page screenshots and element screenshots; its guide notes that an element screenshot scrolls the element into view by default when it is hidden: Puppeteer Screenshots.
Make visual comparisons reproducible
For Playwright visual tests, expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() waits until two consecutive screenshots match before comparing with the saved reference. That helps avoid capturing while the page is still changing, but it does not make screenshots identical across different machines. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors in its Visual comparisons guidance.

Generate and compare reference images in the same environment when practical. Disable animations or mask dynamic regions only when that matches the test’s purpose; masking or altering a capture can conceal a real visual regression.
Troubleshoot missing banners or incorrect screenshots
- The banner still appears: verify that the real consent button was selected and wait for the actual banner to hide. A localStorage entry by itself does not prove the site accepted or applied it.
- The saved choice has no effect: confirm the restored state belongs to the site’s origin and was saved after the consent action completed. Check the site’s actual storage key and value rather than guessing.
- Seeding works on one page but not another: confirm the target page uses the same origin. LocalStorage is origin-scoped, and initialization must run for the intended page before its scripts execute.
- The screenshot is cut off: use
fullPage: truefor the scrollable page instead of the default viewport capture. - The image differs from a reference: compare in a consistent browser and execution environment, and check whether animations or changing content affect the result.

Does a localStorage value guarantee the consent banner will stay hidden?
No. Verify the visible page state after loading or restoring storage; the site may require a different schema or additional processing.
