Use PhantomJS’s webpage module to open the page and save its rendered view with page.render(). Set page.viewportSize for the browser viewport, or page.clipRect to save only the video’s screen region. The important limitation: PhantomJS’s official documentation does not establish reliable HTML5 video playback, codec support, autoplay, or seeking. You must confirm that the desired frame is actually visible in the exact PhantomJS build and environment before rendering.
What PhantomJS can—and cannot—capture
PhantomJS captures a rendered web page, not a video frame through a dedicated video API. The documented workflow is to create a page, open a URL, and call page.render(filename). The screenshot guide describes PhantomJS as using WebKit for page layout and rendering (PhantomJS screen capture guide).
That general rendering capability is not a guarantee that a particular video will play or render correctly. The official references reviewed do not define a universal way to wait for media readiness, seek to a timestamp, or verify that a target frame has been painted. Compatibility can depend on the video format, PhantomJS build, and host environment. Treat “page loaded” and “video frame ready” as separate conditions.
There is also a maintenance caveat: the PhantomJS project repository says development is suspended until further notice and identifies 2.1 as the latest stable release. Check the repository for current status before adopting PhantomJS for a new workflow.

Capture the page viewport
This runnable PhantomJS script opens a page, checks the page-load status, and saves the current viewport as a PNG. Replace the example URL with the page you control or are authorized to capture.
var page = require('webpage').create();
page.viewportSize = { width: 1280, height: 720 };
page.open('https://example.com/page-with-video', function (status) {
if (status !== 'success') {
console.log('Unable to load the page');
phantom.exit(1);
return;
}
// The page-load callback does not prove that video playback
// has reached or painted the desired frame.
page.render('video-page.png');
phantom.exit();
});
Save the file as capture-video.js, then run it with the PhantomJS executable:
phantomjs capture-video.js
The official quick start demonstrates this pattern: create a page with require('webpage').create(), call page.open(), render after a successful load, and exit. See Quick Start with PhantomJS and the render API reference.
Choose the viewport deliberately
page.viewportSize sets the browser viewport dimensions. It affects layout, responsive breakpoints, and the size of the viewport screenshot. Set it before opening the page when you need a specific desktop or mobile-like layout. It does not guarantee a particular video size: page CSS, responsive rules, and the video’s container determine the element’s rendered dimensions.

Interpret the load status correctly
page.open(url, callback) calls back with a status such as success or fail. A successful status indicates that the page load completed according to PhantomJS; it does not mean that a video has buffered, autoplayed, sought to a timestamp, or painted the intended frame. The distinction is documented by the scope of the open API: it reports page loading, not media readiness.
Capture only the video region
Set page.clipRect before rendering to save a rectangular page region rather than the full viewport. Its object uses top, left, width, and height; these coordinates describe a region in page/screenshot units. For example:
page.clipRect = { top: 120, left: 160, width: 640, height: 360 };
page.render('video-region.png');
Those values are an example, not an automatic measurement of your video element. Adjust them to match the element’s actual location and dimensions at the selected viewport. The clipping behavior is documented in the screen-capture guide and Page Automation with PhantomJS.
Read an element’s geometry when it moves
If responsive layout or page content makes fixed coordinates unreliable, one implementation pattern is to inspect the element’s bounding rectangle in the page context and pass its numeric values back to PhantomJS. page.evaluate() runs code in the page context, but values crossing between that context and PhantomJS must be simple serializable data; do not try to return a DOM node or function closure. This is a geometry technique, not an official video-capture feature. See the evaluate API reference.

page.open('https://example.com/page-with-video', function (status) {
if (status !== 'success') {
console.log('Unable to load the page');
phantom.exit(1);
return;
}
var rect = page.evaluate(function () {
var video = document.querySelector('video');
if (!video) return null;
var r = video.getBoundingClientRect();
return { top: r.top, left: r.left, width: r.width, height: r.height };
});
if (!rect || rect.width <= 0 || rect.height <= 0) {
console.log('Video element not found or has no visible size');
phantom.exit(1);
return;
}
page.clipRect = rect;
page.render('video-region.png');
phantom.exit();
});
This example assumes a single visible <video> element and that its bounding rectangle is suitable for clipping. It does not establish that a video frame has loaded or that the rectangle excludes overlays. For nested scrolling, transforms, overlays, or a player implemented outside a native <video> element, inspect the page and validate the resulting image.
Getting the intended video frame
The screenshot call records what PhantomJS has rendered at that moment. It does not request a timestamp. The official documentation reviewed here does not specify reliable media events or a supported seek-and-wait sequence for PhantomJS video captures. Therefore, there is no documented, universal “wait until frame X” recipe to add to the script above.
- Verify the exact media URL, format, and target PhantomJS build in the same operating environment you will use for capture.
- Check the resulting image itself. A successful page load or a visible player control is not evidence that the requested frame was painted.
- If the capture must represent a specific timestamp, treat frame selection and readiness as application-specific work, and test it against the real page and media rather than assuming browser events behave consistently in this legacy runtime.
- If the video is cross-origin, protected, streamed, or dependent on browser capabilities unavailable in the target build, the page may load while the frame remains unavailable. The official references do not establish compatibility for these cases.
Output formats and practical choices
page.render(filename) selects its output format from the filename extension. The render reference lists PDF, PNG, JPEG, BMP, and PPM; GIF support depends on the Qt build. For a still video frame, PNG is a sensible choice when avoiding lossy compression matters, while JPEG can be useful when smaller photographic output is preferred. PhantomJS’s documented render formats do not include WebP.
Use a viewport screenshot when surrounding page context matters; use clipRect when only the player region is wanted. Clipping is a rectangle, not a selector, and it will not automatically follow an element unless you calculate and set the coordinates yourself.

Troubleshooting common failures
The script reports “Unable to load the page”
page.open() returned a status other than success. Confirm the URL is reachable from the machine running PhantomJS, then check DNS, connectivity, redirects, and any access requirements. The callback status is a load signal, not a diagnosis of video support; consult the open reference for its documented role.
The screenshot shows a black, blank, or poster frame
The page may have loaded while media playback or rendering did not reach the expected state. The official PhantomJS sources do not establish codec or HTML5 video reliability. Validate the exact file, runtime, and host, and do not treat successful page loading as proof of frame readiness.
The video is missing from a clipped screenshot
Check that clipRect uses the element’s current coordinates and that width and height are positive. A responsive layout, scroll position, or delayed layout change can invalidate fixed coordinates. Use page.evaluate() to return numeric geometry when necessary, then inspect the resulting screenshot.
The saved file has the wrong format or cannot be opened
Use a documented extension such as .png, .jpg, .bmp, .ppm, or .pdf. If trying GIF, remember that support depends on the Qt build. See the render reference for the supported output formats.

Can PhantomJS capture a video element at a specific timestamp?
The official references reviewed do not establish a reliable timestamp-seeking workflow. You must validate frame selection and readiness in the exact page and PhantomJS environment.
Does page.clipRect select a video element?
No. It clips a rectangular region using page coordinates; it is not a DOM selector.
