For example, selector=.content targets an element with the class content. The API can capture the whole selected element, including content beyond the viewport; set capture_beyond_viewport=false if you want only its visible portion.
Make an element screenshot request
Use a stable CSS selector that identifies the element you want. In a GET query string, URL-encode selector characters that have special meaning in URLs: for example, encode the # in #target as %23.

Choose and verify the selector
Prefer a unique ID, a data attribute, or a sufficiently specific CSS selector. A selector that matches several elements does not capture all matches: ScreenshotOne selects the first visible match in DOM order. Inspect the live page DOM and make the selector specific enough to identify the intended element, particularly when a site generates markup dynamically.
The selector option identifies the element to capture. It is distinct from scroll_into_view, which positions a matching element in the viewport. If several elements match scroll_into_view, the first visible match in DOM order is selected. If no match exists, the documented behavior is to render the viewport at the top unless error_on_selector_not_found is enabled.
Control what part of the element is captured
With a selector specified, capture_beyond_viewport defaults to true, allowing the screenshot to include the full selected element even when it extends past the visible viewport. Set it to false to capture only the visible portion. Selector scrolling is enabled by default; scrolling the target into view can also trigger lazy-loaded images or other off-screen content.

If the standard selector capture does not handle a partially visible element as needed, try selector_algorithm=clip. ScreenshotOne describes this as an alternative for some elements that are not fully visible or require scrolling; it is an option to test, not a guarantee for every page layout. Selector or coordinate clipping?
Use selector targeting when the capture should follow a dependable element in the page structure. Use coordinate clipping when you need a fixed rectangular region and cannot reliably target an element. Coordinate clipping requires all four values: clip_x, clip_y, clip_width, and clip_height.

Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect capture
selector_not_found
This error can mean the selector is incorrect, the target is not visible, the element has zero height, it has not rendered before the timeout, or its visibility depends on page state or interaction. Check the live DOM, confirm that the element is visible and has dimensions, and allow more render time if it appears late. If the target only appears after an interaction, arrange for the required page state before capture.
When error_on_selector_not_found is true, failure to find a visible match can produce an error. If you set it to false, the API can return a screenshot of the page instead of failing for a missing selector. That fallback may not be the element image your workflow expects, so check the response and resulting capture. See ScreenshotOne’s Selector Not Found guidance.

The wrong matching element was captured
If the selector matches multiple elements, refine it with a more specific class combination, parent-child relationship, or unique attribute. Remember that the first visible match in DOM order is selected.

The element is clipped or incomplete
Check whether you want the full element or only the visible portion. Keep capture_beyond_viewport enabled for the full element; disable it for the visible portion. For partially visible or scroll-dependent targets, try selector_algorithm=clip and verify the result against the page.
Protect the access key
Send requests over HTTPS. ScreenshotOne supports GET and POST, and accepts the access key in a GET parameter, a POST JSON body, or the X-Access-Key header. Treat the key like a password: keep it in an environment variable or secrets manager, not in public browser code or source control. Avoid publishing unsigned screenshot URLs containing the key; ScreenshotOne documents signed links for cases where screenshot URLs must be shared publicly.
