Capture one element in Selenium
This complete Python example assumes driver is an already configured Selenium WebDriver. It finds an element, saves its visible bounding region as a PNG, and fails loudly if the file cannot be written:

What Selenium captures
The WebDriver element-screenshot command captures the visible region enclosed by the element’s bounding rectangle. If the element is outside the viewport, WebDriver scrolls it into view before drawing that rectangle. This is different from taking a screenshot of the current browser window: the result is the element region, not the complete page.

The capture is geometric. It includes the pixels inside the element’s rectangle; it does not understand that you may want only the text, a chart plot area, or one semantic subsection inside a larger element. For a custom crop, save the element image first and process it with an image library in a separate step.
Choose a reliable locator
Use a selector that identifies the intended component consistently between runs. An ID is usually the simplest choice:

Finding an element and having a useful screenshot are separate events. A page can contain the element before its chart, image, fonts, or asynchronous data has finished rendering. Use an explicit wait for a condition that represents readiness rather than an arbitrary sleep.

If your application exposes a stronger signal—such as a “loaded” class, a result count, or a chart canvas with data—wait for that signal as well. An element can be visible while still showing a spinner or an empty placeholder.

For example, send PNG bytes directly to an image-processing function:

Output-path rules that prevent failures
- Use an absolute path. Resolving a relative path with
Path(...).resolve()makes the destination unambiguous in CI and scheduled jobs. - Create the parent directory before calling Selenium. A missing directory is a common file-I/O failure.
- Keep the filename extension as
.png. Selenium documents the element screenshot result as PNG and warns when the extension does not match. - Check the returned Boolean and verify the file if your pipeline requires durable artifacts.
- Ensure the WebDriver process has write permission in the destination directory.
Element screenshot versus window screenshot
Choose the API based on the deliverable:
- One component: call
element.screenshot(). This is appropriate for a receipt, card, chart, table, or isolated UI component. - The visible browser window: call
driver.save_screenshot(). This includes the current window rather than only one element. - A custom subregion: capture the element, then crop or annotate the resulting PNG with a separate image-processing step.
Element screenshots do not automatically create a full-page image. They also do not promise a semantic crop around text or individual descendants.
Common errors and fixes
NoSuchElementException
Cause: the selector is wrong, the page has not loaded the component, or the element is inside a frame or shadow root. Fix: verify the selector in browser developer tools, wait for the element, and switch to the correct iframe before locating it. Shadow-DOM access requires the application’s supported shadow-root APIs.

StaleElementReferenceException
Cause: a framework replaced the node after you located it. Fix: wait for the replacement to finish and locate the element again immediately before calling screenshot().
The image contains a spinner or blank chart
Cause: visibility occurred before asynchronous rendering completed. Fix: wait for a data-ready condition, a nonempty result, or a component-specific completion marker instead of using a fixed delay alone.
screenshot() returns False or no file appears
Cause: the path is invalid, its directory does not exist, or the process lacks permission. Fix: resolve an absolute path, create the parent directory, use a .png suffix, and check filesystem permissions.
The result includes more or less than expected
Cause: Selenium captures the element’s bounding rectangle, including its padding, borders, and visible descendants. Fix: choose a more precise element or crop the saved PNG afterward. CSS transforms and responsive layout can also change the rectangle, so use a consistent viewport when visual comparisons matter.
The target is outside the viewport
WebDriver scrolls the target into view for the element screenshot command. If the page uses sticky headers or overlays, inspect the resulting image and adjust the page state or target element when necessary.
Reliability and performance practices
- Set a deterministic browser window size for repeatable responsive layouts.
- Wait for the application state you actually need, not merely document presence.
- Capture after fonts, images, and canvas content have rendered when those pixels matter to the artifact.
- Use unique filenames in parallel test runs to avoid workers overwriting one another.
- Keep screenshots as bytes when the next step is an upload or image comparison; this avoids an unnecessary temporary file.
- Store failures with the page URL, selector, viewport, and exception so a flaky capture can be reproduced.
Element screenshots are normally smaller and faster to transfer than full-window images, but the browser still has to load and render the page. Network latency, JavaScript execution, large images, and test-grid distance usually dominate the total time.
