First decide what you mean by “server desktop.” To capture a web page rendered on a server, use PHP to control a headless browser such as Chromium; this works without a visible desktop window. To capture the actual Windows screen visible to the PHP process, PHP’s imagegrabscreen() can do that, but it is Windows-only. These are different tasks, and the right approach depends on which image you need.
Choose what you need to capture
A server-side screenshot request usually means one of two things:
- A web page: a browser loads a URL and saves the rendered page as an image. Use browser automation for this. A headless browser does not need a visible browser window.
- The operating-system screen: the current desktop, including visible windows. PHP’s native
imagegrabscreen()function captures the whole screen on Windows. It is not a general Linux server screenshot API.
If your goal is to save a website screenshot, the browser route is the direct fit. Playwright PHP documents headless Chromium, navigation, and page screenshots; its project documentation lists PHP 8.2 or newer and Node.js 20 or newer as requirements. Check the current installation instructions and runtime requirements for your deployment before setting it up.
If you truly need an existing interactive desktop session, treat that as a display-capture problem: the capture process must be able to access the session. The methods covered here do not establish a universal recipe for capturing arbitrary server desktops across operating systems.

Capture a web page with Playwright PHP
The basic workflow is to launch Chromium, create a page, navigate to the target, wait for the state you need, save a screenshot, and close the browser context. The example below uses the Playwright PHP API shown in its project documentation. It assumes the package and browser are installed according to that project’s current setup instructions.

}This is a starting pattern, not a guarantee that every application is ready as soon as navigation returns. A page may load its content asynchronously, and a screenshot records the page state at the moment of capture. For a production workflow, wait for a meaningful, application-specific readiness condition before saving the image. For example, if your page has a stable heading that appears only after the relevant content loads, wait for that heading using the wait API supported by your installed Playwright PHP version. Consult the Playwright PHP screenshot guide for the current screenshot options and examples.
Choose viewport, full-page, or element capture
Capture scope changes what the image represents:
- Viewport: the visible browser area. Use it when you need a snapshot of what fits on screen.
- Full page: the page’s scrollable content, including below-the-fold material. Use it when the complete page is the artifact, but avoid making it the default for very long pages.
- Element: a particular component or region. Use it to isolate a widget or investigate a focused visual issue.
Playwright PHP’s screenshot guide documents these scopes. Prefer the smallest capture that answers your question: a full-page image can be unnecessarily large, while a viewport capture may omit content the reader expects to see.
Keep captures useful and safe
- Do not write credentials, personal information, or other secrets into screenshots that will be stored or shared.
- For repeatable visual comparisons, control the viewport, fonts, animations, test data, browser version, and rendering environment. Changes in those conditions can affect pixels even when the product itself has not changed.
- Use a clear readiness condition rather than relying on a fixed delay when the page has a reliable element or application state to wait for.
Capture the actual Windows screen with PHP
If you need the screen currently visible to a PHP process on Windows—not a browser-rendered page—use imagegrabscreen(). The PHP manual says the function is only available on Windows. It returns GdImage|false; since PHP 8.0, a successful call returns a GdImage object. The PHP manual’s basic pattern is to save the captured image with imagepng().

}Check that the GD extension is enabled in the PHP runtime that will execute this code. Also confirm that the process can access the Windows screen you intend to capture. A successful capture is the screen visible to that process, not a remote user’s browser view of a URL.

Use chrome-php/chrome as another browser-control option
chrome-php/chrome is an alternative PHP interface for controlling Chrome or Chromium. Its documentation covers opening pages, saving screenshots, clip-based captures, and full-page capture. It may fit an application whose existing dependencies or preferred API align with that project.
Compare it with Playwright PHP against the needs of your deployment: supported PHP and browser versions, browser installation and operating-system dependencies, headless versus headed use, capture scopes, and the project’s current maintenance and release guidance. The available project information does not establish a universal compatibility result or performance winner, so choose based on verified requirements for your environment rather than an assumed speed advantage.

Headless capture, headed debugging, and Xvfb
For a web-page screenshot, headless Chromium is often the simpler server-side approach: the browser renders the page without opening a visible window. The Playwright PHP project documents headless launch.
Headed mode can help when you need to inspect browser behavior interactively. The Playwright PHP inspector documentation notes Xvfb for headed debugging in Linux or CI environments without a display. That is a debugging scenario, not a requirement for every headless page screenshot. See the Playwright PHP inspector documentation for that guidance.
Operating-system packages, browser flags, sandbox configuration, and process permissions depend on the library, browser build, and server distribution. Verify those details in the current installation documentation for your chosen library and environment instead of assuming a generic command will work everywhere.
Troubleshoot common screenshot failures
The screenshot is blank or misses content
The page may not have reached the state you intended when the screenshot ran. Add a wait for an application-specific ready condition, such as a known element, and verify the target URL and resulting browser state. A fixed delay can help with a known timing issue, but it is less reliable than waiting for the condition that signals the content is ready.

imagegrabscreen() is unavailable or returns failure
Confirm that the PHP process runs on Windows and that GD is available in that runtime. The function is documented as Windows-only; it is not the right solution for a Linux host or for capturing only a web page.
The file is not created
Check the destination path and whether the PHP process can write to its directory. With the native route, check the return value from imagepng() as well as the result from imagegrabscreen(). With browser automation, confirm that the screenshot path is valid and that the process can write there.
Headed browser launch fails on Linux or CI
A headed browser needs a display. The Playwright PHP inspector guide notes Xvfb for headed debugging where Linux or CI has no display. If you only need to render a page screenshot, use the documented headless mode rather than adding a virtual display without a reason.
Visual comparisons differ between runs
Standardize the viewport, fonts, animations, data, browser version, and rendering environment before interpreting a pixel difference as a product change. A screenshot records a rendered moment; uncontrolled page state and environment can both affect it.
