For a normal screenshot of what you can currently see, open the page and press Windows+Shift+S. Choose Rectangle, Window, Full screen, or Freeform, select the area, then use Snipping Tool to copy, annotate, and save the image. This built-in method works on Windows 10 and Windows 11. If you need the entire page from top to bottom, use OneNote Web Clipper’s Full Page mode or create a PDF with the browser’s print command instead.

Choose the result you need

Goal Best method What you get Extra software
Capture the visible part of a webpage Windows+Shift+S (Snipping Tool) PNG or another image of a selected region, window, or screen None; built into Windows 10 and 11
Capture the whole page as one image OneNote Web Clipper, then Full Page A page-length screenshot image saved to OneNote OneNote Web Clipper extension for Edge or Chrome
Keep a printable record Ctrl+P, then save or print Print output or PDF; layout can differ from the screen None

A screen snip records pixels currently rendered on your display. It does not automatically scroll through a long article. A PDF is also not a screenshot: the browser may reflow text, omit elements, or apply print styles.

Capture the visible webpage with Snipping Tool

1. Prepare the page

  1. Open the webpage in Chrome, Edge, or another Windows browser.
  2. Scroll to the section you want and close menus, cookie prompts, or other overlays that should not appear.
  3. Resize the browser or set zoom before capturing. The snip reflects exactly what is visible at that moment.

2. Open the snipping overlay

Press Windows+Shift+S. Windows dims the screen and displays the capture controls. Microsoft documents four modes:

  • Rectangle: drag a box around the webpage area. This is the usual choice for an excerpt.
  • Window: select the browser window. Browser borders and other window chrome can be included.
  • Full screen: capture every monitor area currently shown.
  • Freeform: draw an irregular outline around the part you want.

3. Select and edit

Drag the selection or click the target window. A notification normally opens the result in Snipping Tool. If it stays behind another window, select the notification or open Snipping Tool from Start and choose the latest capture. You can crop, draw, highlight, and add a ruler or other available annotation tools.

4. Copy or save

Use Ctrl+C to place the image on the clipboard for an email, document, or chat. Use Ctrl+S or Save as to choose a file name, location, and image format. Current Windows versions can automatically save captures in the Screenshots folder, while older builds may require an explicit save; check the notification and Snipping Tool settings rather than assuming one behavior.

Other built-in shortcuts

Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu, choose a mode, select New, and then capture. The Print Screen key is another Microsoft-documented option for copying the entire screen to the clipboard; paste it into Paint or another image editor and save it.

Capture an entire webpage as an image

A page that extends below the fold requires a scrolling capture. Microsoft’s OneNote Web Clipper documentation describes this workflow for Edge and Chrome.

  1. Install and enable the OneNote Web Clipper extension in the browser.
  2. Open the page, then select the Web Clipper icon.
  3. Choose Full Page for the complete page or Region for a selected area.
  4. Confirm the destination notebook and save. The result is clipped to OneNote as a screenshot image.

The clipper also offers Article, which saves page text and images as editable content rather than one image. The extension may request browser permissions; review the current permission prompt and your browser’s extension settings before accepting. Very long or highly dynamic pages can take longer to render, and content that appears only after interaction may not be included until it has loaded.

Microsoft’s reviewed help does not establish one consistent, built-in full-page image command for every current Chrome or Edge installation. If the extension is unavailable or your organization blocks it, capture several visible sections with Snipping Tool and stitch them in an image editor, or use an automated screenshot service.

Save a webpage as a PDF instead

Chrome

  1. Press Ctrl+P.
  2. Choose the desired destination, such as Save as PDF.
  3. Set pages, paper size, orientation, margins, and other options, then save.

Edge

  1. Press Ctrl+P.
  2. Choose a printer or PDF destination and adjust the print settings.
  3. Enable Background graphics when colors or background images are important.

On supported sites, Edge’s Immersive Reader (available through F9 where offered) can provide a clutter-free print source. It is not available on every website. Print output follows print CSS and pagination, so it may remove sticky headers, interactive controls, animations, or screen-only content. Use a screenshot when visual fidelity matters; use PDF when searchable text, printing, or archival is more important.

Make the capture readable and reliable

  • Include context: keep enough of the browser window or page heading to identify what was captured, unless privacy requires cropping it out.
  • Use the highest practical display scale: enlarge the browser or operating-system scaling before a region capture when small text must remain legible.
  • Wait for lazy content: scroll through the page once before a full-page clip so images and sections have a chance to load.
  • Hide sensitive data: crop account names, addresses, tokens, and notification previews before sharing.
  • Check dark mode and zoom: both alter the pixels in an image capture and can change how a printout looks.
  • Keep the original: save an unannotated copy before drawing or highlighting if the image may be needed later.

Troubleshooting common problems

The shortcut does nothing

Press all three keys together and release them. On some keyboards, Print Screen or a function-layer key changes the behavior of capture shortcuts. Open Snipping Tool from Start to verify that the app works, and check whether another utility has taken over the shortcut.

The capture is black, blank, or incomplete

Wait for the page to finish loading, then retry. Video-protected content, GPU-rendered surfaces, bot checks, and pages that replace content after an interaction may not appear in a normal screen snip. Try a window or full-screen mode, disable an obstructing overlay, or use the page’s print view when an image is not required.

The full-page clip stops early

Scroll through the page first to trigger lazy-loaded images, close sticky dialogs, and try again. A site can also change its DOM while the extension is scrolling. For a stable record, print to PDF or use an automated capture with an explicit wait condition.

Text or images look blurry

Do not enlarge a small screenshot after capture. Increase browser zoom or display scale before selecting the area, and capture the browser window at its native size. A PDF is preferable when selectable text is more important than identical pixels.

Extra browser UI appears

Use Rectangle mode and draw only around the page content. Window mode intentionally includes the browser frame; full-screen mode includes everything on the monitor.

OneNote Web Clipper asks for permissions

That is expected for an extension that reads the current page and sends a clip to OneNote. Read the current permission list, allow only the access your organization permits, and remove the extension when you no longer need it.

Or skip the browser setup: ScreenshotNeo

For repeatable captures, server-side jobs, or pages that must be processed without a desktop session, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. Before capture it can accept the cookie or consent banner and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be enabled or disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and options. Replace the example URL with the page you control or are authorized to capture.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Options useful for webpage captures

  • Full-page screenshots with lazy images loaded, or one element selected by CSS selector.
  • Dark mode, 12 device presets, any viewport, and retina scale.
  • PDF paper size, margins, landscape mode, and page ranges.
  • Custom CSS and JavaScript, a click before capture, hidden selectors, and waits for a selector, delay, or network idle.
  • Blocking for ads, trackers, requests, or resource types.
  • Custom headers, cookies, user agent, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, and transparent backgrounds.
  • Image resizing, a chosen cache TTL, signed links for public <img> tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, and bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call.
  • Usage API and OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients, so an AI agent can request captures directly.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I capture only a particular element on a page?

Yes. In Snipping Tool, drag a rectangle around it. For repeatable automated captures, ScreenshotNeo accepts a CSS selector for an element.

Will a screenshot include content hidden behind a cookie banner?

A manual snip records the banner if it is visible. ScreenshotNeo can accept consent banners and remove supported consent platforms before capturing.

Is a screenshot better than a PDF for legal or compliance records?

It depends on the requirement. A screenshot preserves visible appearance, while a PDF preserves print-oriented text and pagination. Check the retention and evidentiary rules that apply to your organization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I automate many URLs at once?

A desktop Snipping Tool workflow is manual. ScreenshotNeo supports bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call and asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks.
