Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo capture a Cloudflare Access-protected page, send the screenshot service valid Access credentials along with the page request. For recurring, unattended captures, the recommended route is a Cloudflare Access service token authorized by a Service Auth policy. For a one-off capture, a valid CF_Authorization session cookie can work. Cloudflare Browser Run’s Screenshot Quick Action accepts custom request headers and cookies, then renders the page before capturing it. Use only credentials and pages you are authorized to access.
Choose an authentication method
| Situation | Method | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One URL and an existing authorized session | Pass a valid CF_Authorization cookie to the Screenshot Quick Action. |
Simple, but the cookie expires with the session and must be handled as sensitive identity material. Cloudflare Screenshot Quick Action; Access authorization cookie. |
| Scheduled or unattended captures | Use Access service-token headers and a Service Auth policy that permits the token. | Designed for machine access, but requires Access administrator setup and secure secret storage. Cloudflare service tokens; Screenshot Quick Action. |
| The capture needs interactive login or browser steps | Control a Browser Run session with Playwright, Puppeteer, or CDP. | Offers more browser control than a stateless screenshot request. Browser Run getting started. |
| Only part of a page or the entire document is needed | Use the Quick Action’s selector or fullPage option. |
Confirm the selected element or scrollable scope matches the intended evidence. Screenshot Quick Action options. |
Set up a service token for automated captures
For a recurring job, use a Cloudflare Access service token rather than relying on an employee’s browser session. The token works only when the Access application’s policy authorizes it.
- Ask an Access administrator to create a service token. Cloudflare displays the client secret only once at creation, so store it immediately in your organization’s secret manager. See Cloudflare’s service-token documentation.
- Configure the Access application’s policy. Add a Service Auth policy that permits the intended token. Do not weaken or bypass the application’s access policy merely to make a capture work.
- Send both Access headers with the screenshot request. Use
CF-Access-Client-IdandCF-Access-Client-Secret, with the values issued for your token. The screenshot endpoint also needs its own Cloudflare API authentication, as shown below. - Keep credentials out of code, page content, and logs. Load them from a secret store or environment variables at runtime, restrict access, and rotate or revoke them according to your organization’s policy.
Cloudflare’s service-token documentation, updated October 2, 2026, describes strict service-token authentication behavior. Depending on the Access configuration, a failed service-token request may return HTTP 401 or 403 rather than redirecting to a login page. A successful request under strict service-token authentication does not create a reusable CF_Authorization browser cookie. Check the current behavior and configuration for your organization in the service-token documentation and Access changelog.
Make a screenshot request with Cloudflare Browser Run
The Quick Action requires a Cloudflare API token with Browser Rendering Edit permission for REST API use. Cloudflare also documents using the action through a Worker browser binding. In the REST request, supply that API token for Browser Run and the Access service-token headers for the protected site. The API token and Access credentials serve different purposes: one authorizes use of Browser Run; the other authorizes access to the page.

Use a session cookie for a one-off capture
If you already have an authorized Access session, the CF_Authorization cookie can authorize a capture when passed as a cookie to the Quick Action. Cloudflare identifies it as an identity-bearing JWT used for Access authorization. Its expiration follows the configured session duration; when neither relevant duration is configured, Cloudflare documents a default of 24 hours. Do not treat it as a permanent credential.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Use the session cookie only when appropriate for your account and capture. Anyone who obtains it may be able to act as that authenticated session until it expires or is invalidated. Avoid copying it into source control, shared request logs, screenshots of configuration, or an untrusted automation service. See Cloudflare’s authorization-cookie documentation and the Quick Action cookie options.
Choose the page scope and readiness condition
Viewport or full page
Use the viewport options when the desired output is a particular screen-sized view. Set fullPage when you need the entire scrollable document. A long page can produce a much taller image, so choose the scope intentionally and verify the output.

Capture one element
Use the Quick Action’s selector option when only a particular element matters. Make sure the selector matches the intended element on the rendered page; otherwise, the result may omit content or fail to capture the expected scope.
Wait for the page to be ready
Browser Run renders the page’s HTML and JavaScript before taking the screenshot. Navigation completion alone may not mean that a client-rendered application, delayed image, or asynchronously loaded section is ready. Use the documented gotoOptions and wait settings that fit the page, or wait for a page-specific readiness condition where supported. The Browser Run page says that the Screenshot endpoint captures the “fully rendered page”; that does not remove the need to validate what a particular URL actually returned. See the endpoint documentation.

Verify the screenshot before relying on it
An HTTP-successful capture is not proof that the intended protected page appeared in the image. Open the output and check that it shows the expected URL and authenticated content, not an Access login, denial, or generic error page. For important or recurring captures, include a check that detects an unexpected result before storing or distributing the image.
If Access is rejecting a request, verify the application’s token check and authorization policy. Cloudflare’s self-hosted application guidance discusses validating Access tokens at the origin or through Cloudflare Tunnel: Cloudflare Access self-hosted public applications.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP 401 or 403 | The Access service token is missing, invalid, expired, or not permitted by a Service Auth policy; the Browser Run API token may also lack the required permission. | Check both credential sets, the Access policy, the target application, and the Browser Rendering Edit permission. For strict service-token behavior, 401 or 403 may be returned instead of a login redirect. Service-token documentation. |
| The screenshot shows an Access login or denial page | The request did not carry the intended headers or cookie, or the credential does not authorize the target URL. | Confirm the exact URL and domain, then verify that the correct headers or cookie reached the page request and that the policy permits them. Do not infer successful page authentication from the screenshot API response alone. Screenshot endpoint. |
| A cookie-based capture worked earlier but now fails | The CF_Authorization session cookie expired or was invalidated. |
Obtain a fresh authorized session cookie or configure a service token for unattended use. Follow your organization’s credential-handling rules. Authorization-cookie documentation. |
| The page is blank or partly rendered | The page may require more time or a page-specific readiness condition; the URL may also be returning an unexpected result. | Inspect the page directly, adjust the documented navigation or wait settings, and verify the screenshot scope and viewport. Quick Action options. |
| The whole page or target element is missing | The capture uses viewport scope instead of full-page scope, or the selector does not match the intended element. | Check fullPage, selector spelling, and whether the target exists after rendering. Quick Action options. |
| The image is not in the expected format or quality | The selected format and quality options are incompatible, or the request relies on defaults. | Set the image type explicitly and use quality only with a compatible type, as documented by Cloudflare. |
When to use an interactive browser session
A stateless Quick Action is a good fit when the page can be reached by sending one request with headers or cookies. If the workflow must complete interactive login steps, click through a sequence, or preserve browser state between actions, use a Browser Run session controlled with Playwright, Puppeteer, or CDP. Cloudflare’s Browser Run getting-started guide describes browser sessions and setup.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
- Wait only as long as the page needs. More conservative readiness conditions can reduce incomplete captures but may keep a browser task open longer. Prefer a page-specific readiness condition where supported rather than an arbitrary delay.
- Keep captures reproducible. Use consistent URL, viewport, page scope, and wait behavior, and inspect results for login or denial pages before downstream use.
- Protect sensitive output. Screenshots of authenticated content can contain confidential information. Apply the same storage and access controls you would use for the page itself.
- Check your account’s current limits and costs. Cloudflare documents Free and Paid Browser Run plans, but the current account-level quotas and costs are not established here. Confirm the applicable terms in Cloudflare’s Browser Run documentation and account settings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Cloudflare Access service token be used as a browser login session?
No. It authorizes the service-token request when the Access policy permits it; under strict service-token authentication, a successful request does not create a reusable CF_Authorization cookie.
Does the screenshot endpoint’s successful response guarantee the page was authenticated?
No. Open and verify the returned image; it may show a login, denial, or error page instead of the intended protected content.
