Use browser automation to open the starting URL, let navigation follow redirects, record the final browser address, check the response status, and then capture the page. With Playwright, the basic sequence is page.goto(), page.url(), and page.screenshot(). One important distinction: the final address reached after redirects is not necessarily the page’s declared SEO canonical URL.
What “canonical URL” means here
The phrase can refer to two different URLs:
- Final browser URL: the address the browser reaches after following navigation redirects. Use this meaning when you want a screenshot of the destination a visitor reaches.
- Declared SEO canonical URL: a URL identified separately in the page’s HTML, commonly through a canonical link element. A redirect chain alone does not tell you what the page declares as canonical.
The workflow below captures the page reached by browser navigation. If you need the declared canonical target instead, inspect that document field separately and decide whether to capture the visited destination or open the declared target as a separate navigation.
Capture the page reached after redirects with Playwright
Install Playwright and its browser for your project, then run a script like this. Replace the example URL with the starting URL, including its https:// or http:// scheme.

})();page.goto() returns the main-resource response for the first non-redirect response in the navigation chain. A navigation may complete and still return an HTTP error status such as 404 or 500, so inspect the status instead of assuming that a resolved navigation means the page succeeded. Choose when the page is ready
The example waits for domcontentloaded, which is a practical starting point, not a guarantee that every page’s content is ready. For client-rendered or data-driven pages, wait for a page-specific signal before capturing, such as a selector that appears when the relevant content is rendered:

await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });Replace the selector with one that actually indicates readiness for the page you are capturing. Playwright’s Page API discourages treating networkidle as a universal readiness rule; pages may continue making background requests after their main content is usable.
Choose viewport or full-page capture
With fullPage: true, Playwright captures the full scrollable page. Omit that option to capture the current viewport. Set the viewport when creating the page if the screenshot must use a reproducible width and height. Playwright’s screenshot API also supports an output path and image type; consult its Page API for the available options.

Inspect the redirect chain when you need it
page.url() gives you the final browser address, but not the full sequence of redirects. Playwright links the request objects in a redirect chain through redirectedFrom() and redirectedTo(). You can walk backward from the navigation response’s request:

Check the declared SEO canonical separately
If your goal is specifically to find the page’s declared canonical URL, inspect the loaded document rather than inferring it from redirects. For example, after navigation you can read a canonical link element:

If you want an image of the declared target, navigate to that target as a separate step and apply the same status, readiness, and capture checks. Playwright’s redirect documentation describes browser navigation and request history, not the rules for choosing an SEO canonical URL.

Make captures reproducible
For screenshots used in debugging, reporting, or comparison, save a small record alongside the image so you can identify what was captured later:
- Starting URL and final browser URL
- Navigation status and capture timestamp
- Browser and Playwright versions
- Viewport dimensions and whether the image is full-page
- Any page-specific readiness condition used
This is operational recordkeeping: the exact rendering can vary with browser version, viewport, page state, and changing site content.

Troubleshooting
The navigation throws or times out
Confirm that the URL includes a scheme, the host is reachable, and the browser can connect without an SSL or network error. Increase the navigation timeout only when the page reasonably needs longer; a longer timeout does not fix an unreachable host or a page that never reaches the chosen condition.
The script finishes but the screenshot shows an error page
Inspect the response status. Playwright does not throw merely because the server returned an HTTP error status, including 404 or 500. Decide whether to keep the error-page screenshot for diagnosis or treat that status as a failed capture.
The screenshot is blank or missing dynamic content
Wait for a meaningful application-specific selector or state before calling screenshot(). Do not assume that a generic network-idle condition means the visible content is ready.

The screenshot is of the wrong URL
Log page.url() after goto(). If the requirement is to capture a declared SEO canonical rather than the redirect destination, inspect the canonical link and explicitly navigate to its target when appropriate.
The image cuts off the page
Use fullPage: true for the full scrollable page. If the intended artifact is a viewport screenshot, leave it off and set the viewport dimensions to the desired values.

Does a redirect prove that the destination is the SEO canonical URL?
No. The final browser URL records where navigation ended; the declared canonical must be inspected separately in the document.
Does Playwright throw when a page returns HTTP 404 or 500?
Not solely because of that status. Check the response returned by page.goto() and handle its status explicitly.
