“How to capture a screenshot from a YouTube video with PHP” can mean two different jobs:
- Get the thumbnail YouTube already publishes for a video, then display, resize, crop, or save it.
- Capture a particular moment in playback, such as the frame at 01:23.
PHP can reliably handle the first job. YouTube’s documented video resource exposes thumbnail URLs and size variants; PHP can download those bytes and GD can transform them. The official thumbnail documentation does not describe an arbitrary-frame extraction endpoint, and GD functions process image data after retrieval—they do not decode a YouTube stream or photograph the embedded player.

A video resource can contain thumbnail objects with a URL, width, and height. Typical documented dimensions are:

These are typical sizes documented by Google for Developers, not a promise that every video has every property. Select the largest property actually returned instead of assuming maxres exists.
Prerequisites and a safe PHP workflow
- PHP with the GD extension enabled (
extension=gdon installations that require enabling it). - An HTTP client. The example uses cURL so redirects, timeouts, and status codes can be checked.
- A thumbnail URL obtained through a documented YouTube API/data response or another permitted source.
- For API calls, credentials and quota appropriate to the operation, plus compliance with YouTube API policies.
The implementation has five stages: obtain the video ID and thumbnail data, choose an available URL, fetch bytes with limits, validate them as an image, and optionally transform with GD.
Complete PHP example: fetch, validate, resize, and save
The function below accepts thumbnail objects returned by the API. It prefers the largest available image, downloads it with cURL, checks the HTTP response and content type, decodes it with imagecreatefromstring(), and writes a JPEG thumbnail. The code is illustrative; test it against your current PHP and libgd build.

In a real application, replace the placeholder URL with the URL returned by the YouTube response. Do not construct undocumented URL patterns and treat them as an API contract. The API response is the source of truth.

What the GD functions do
imagecreatefromstring() recognizes supported image bytes and returns a GD image object, or false for unsupported, corrupt, or unrecognized data. Format support depends on your PHP/libgd build. imagecopy()—the PHP Manual’s “Copy part of an image” function—copies a rectangle from one GD image to another. Neither function captures YouTube playback.
Obtaining thumbnail data from the YouTube API
For an application that already calls the YouTube Data API, read the video resource’s snippet.thumbnails object and pass that associative array to chooseThumbnail(). Check for missing properties because availability and dimensions vary by video.
The documented thumbnails.set method is different: it uploads an image to set a video’s custom thumbnail and requires authorization. It is not a retrieval endpoint and does not extract a frame.

Why PHP cannot capture an arbitrary YouTube playback frame
A timestamped frame requires access to decoded video frames. The documented thumbnail resource supplies selected still images, not a time index. GD receives image bytes only after another component has produced them; it has no YouTube-player or video-stream capture capability.

If you own the source video or have permission to process it, obtain an authorized video file and use a video-processing tool such as FFmpeg to extract a frame, then use PHP/GD for cropping or compositing. Do not download or process a YouTube stream in ways that violate YouTube’s terms or the rights attached to the video. Browser automation can photograph a rendered player, but timing, consent dialogs, bot checks, cross-origin restrictions, and player changes make it a separate, fragile workflow—not an official thumbnail API.
Transformations you can safely add in GD
Crop to a fixed aspect ratio
Calculate a source rectangle before calling imagecopyresampled(). For a 16:9 card, compare the source ratio with 16 / 9, remove the excess width or height from the center, and resample the remaining rectangle.
Add overlays or branding
Create a transparent true-color canvas, copy the thumbnail onto it, then copy a logo or text layer. Keep the overlay truthful: YouTube’s thumbnail policy prohibits misleading imagery and other violating content.
Preserve quality and memory
Decode once, resize to the largest size you actually need, and destroy GD objects promptly. Large images consume memory roughly in proportion to pixel count, regardless of their compressed file size. Set an input byte limit and reject unexpected content types before decoding.
Troubleshooting
No maxres property
This is normal. Select standard, high, medium, or default in that order, based on what the response contains.

imagecreatefromstring() returns false
Verify that the response is really an image, not an HTML error page; check cURL status and content type; confirm GD and the required format libraries are installed; and reject truncated or corrupt bytes.

Use a bounded connect and overall timeout, follow only a small number of redirects, log the status code, and retry transient failures with backoff. Do not disable TLS verification. A 403 may indicate an access, policy, or URL problem rather than a GD problem.
Output is blank or has headers already sent
Send the image content type before any whitespace or debug output. Save to a file first while diagnosing, and inspect the generated file independently.
The result is the wrong moment
You retrieved a thumbnail, not a timestamped frame. Use an authorized video file and a video-frame extraction workflow instead.

- Cache downloaded thumbnails by video ID and selected variant to avoid repeated network requests.
- Set connect, transfer, redirect, and byte limits so a remote response cannot consume unlimited resources.
- Store the original only when needed; otherwise resize once and serve the derivative.
- Log the selected variant, source dimensions, HTTP status, and decode failures without logging secrets.
- For batch jobs, queue downloads and limit concurrency so your server and the upstream service are not overwhelmed.
