It returns a PNG, JPEG, or GIF from an HTTPS URL that defines the center, zoom, size, markers, paths, and styling. Use the Maps JavaScript API when the result must remain draggable and zoomable. JavaScript or jQuery can build either request, but neither library is itself a supported Google map-image export service.
If by “capture” you mean a screenshot of a rendered, interactive map, treat that as a separate requirement. Google documents static-image generation and interactive-map rendering; it does not present an arbitrary browser screenshot or canvas copy as its export route. Browser-origin restrictions and Google’s terms may also affect attempts to copy rendered map pixels.
Choose the capture method first
| Requirement | Use | What you receive | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| A still map for an email, report, card, or print layout | Maps Static API | An image response from an HTTP URL | Fixed image dimensions and URL limits; API key and billing-enabled project required |
| A draggable, zoomable map with controls and events | Maps JavaScript API | A live map rendered in the page | It is not a documented image-export mechanism; attribution, storage, and reuse rules apply |
| Server-side Google Apps Script automation | Apps Script StaticMap | A map URL, blob, or image bytes | Still uses Google’s static-map requirements, including an API key |
| A screenshot of a complete webpage containing a map | A browser screenshot service or controlled browser | Pixels of the page as rendered | This is different from requesting a Google map image and must respect Google’s policies |
Prerequisites for a Static API image
- Create a Google Cloud project, enable the Maps Static API, create an API key, and attach billing to the project. The documentation establishes these as prerequisites; check Google’s current pricing page for rates because prices can change.
- Restrict the key to the applications and APIs that need it. Never publish an unrestricted production key in a tutorial, repository, or client-side source that you cannot monitor.
- Serve the image over HTTPS when your site is HTTPS, and URL-encode parameter values such as addresses, labels, and custom styles.
Capture a static map with plain JavaScript
The simplest browser implementation is an <img> whose URL is assembled with URLSearchParams. The API needs size; when markers do not establish the view, provide center and zoom.
const key = 'YOUR_API_KEY';
const params = new URLSearchParams({
center: 'San Francisco, CA',
zoom: '12',
size: '600x400',
scale: '2',
maptype: 'roadmap',
format: 'png',
markers: 'color:red|label:S|San Francisco, CA',
key
});
const image = document.createElement('img');
image.alt = 'Map centered on San Francisco';
image.width = 600;
image.height = 400;
image.src = `https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/staticmap?${params}`;
document.querySelector('#map-output').replaceChildren(image);
Place <div id="map-output"></div> in the page. The URL-encoded query is safer than concatenating an address directly. In a production site, consider generating the request on your server so the key is not exposed to every visitor, then apply HTTP caching under Google’s rules.

Use a direct HTML image
<img
alt="Map centered on San Francisco"
src="https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/staticmap?center=San+Francisco,CA&zoom=12&size=600x400&key=YOUR_API_KEY">
This is useful for a fixed map. For user-supplied places, create the URL in code and validate input before sending it.
Build the same request with jQuery
jQuery does not render a Google map by itself. It can create an image element, set its attributes, and encode query values.
const params = $.param({
center: 'San Francisco, CA',
zoom: 12,
size: '600x400',
scale: 2,
maptype: 'roadmap',
format: 'png',
markers: 'color:red|label:S|San Francisco, CA',
key: 'YOUR_API_KEY'
});
$('<img>', {
alt: 'Map centered on San Francisco',
width: 600,
height: 400,
src: `https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/staticmap?${params}`
}).appendTo('#map-output');
For a download rather than an inline image, point a link at the generated URL. Whether you may retain or redistribute that file depends on Google’s current terms and attribution requirements; an image URL is not a licence to remove attribution or archive map content indefinitely.
Static API parameters that matter
View and dimensions
centerandzoom: define the view when markers do not. Google describes approximate zoom levels as 1 for the world, 5 for a continent, 10 for a city, 15 for streets, and 20 for buildings. Detail varies by location.size: required image dimensions in pixels. The documented default ceiling is 640×640 atscale=1.scale=2: keeps the geographic coverage but returns twice as many pixels in each dimension, up to 1280×1280 output for the standard limit.- Large images: requests above that size require contacting Google support; the documentation states a support-reviewed maximum of 2048×2048. Do not assume approval.
- URL length: the service limits the complete URL to 16,384 characters. Long style, path, or marker lists can exceed it.
Appearance and content
maptype: roadmap, satellite, terrain, or hybrid.format: PNG, JPEG, or GIF. Google describes JPEG as lossy and PNG/GIF options as lossless; choose based on the image, not as a way around attribution or usage rules.markers: add one or more locations, colors, labels, and optional icons.path: draw lines or polygons, including routes represented by encoded paths.style: adjust feature visibility, colors, and labels for a focused visual.
When a requested zoom is unavailable for a location, the response can be blank because tiles do not exist at that level. Try a lower zoom and verify the place with a known-good request.

When you really need an interactive map
Choose the Maps JavaScript API for panning, zoom controls, markers users can click, directions, or application state that changes with map events. Google’s current guide recommends considering the declarative gmp-map web component for new projects; the established div-plus-JavaScript approach remains supported.
Minimal JavaScript map
<div id="map" style="height:400px"></div>
<script>
async function initMap() {
const { Map } = await google.maps.importLibrary('maps');
new Map(document.getElementById('map'), {
center: { lat: 37.7749, lng: -122.4194 },
zoom: 12,
mapTypeId: 'roadmap'
});
}
</script>
<script async src="https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/js?key=YOUR_API_KEY&callback=initMap"></script>
Use the loading pattern and libraries appropriate to your project, and verify the API version or channel when you publish. The JavaScript reference indexed for this article is version 3.65 on the weekly channel and was marked updated September 1, 2026; that is a volatile detail.
Why a live map is not automatically a downloadable image
A rendered map contains Google-controlled tiles, labels, and attribution. Do not present a canvas workaround or DOM screenshot as an officially supported export. Google’s policy page says pre-fetching, caching, and storage are generally restricted, with place IDs exempted, and it treats persisting a Place Name outside the user’s session as scraping. Keep Google Maps attribution clear and attached to the map content. Requirements can differ by service agreement and EEA status, so consult the current policies and attributions before storing, reusing, or redistributing output.
Apps Script: generate a map without browser code
In Google Apps Script, the official Maps.newStaticMap() builder can set the center, size, markers, paths, format, and map type. getMapUrl() returns a URL; getBlob() or getMapImage() returns image data.

return map.getBlob();
}
Google states that all static map URLs require an API key. Configure credentials according to the Apps Script and Google Maps documentation rather than assuming a browser key will work unchanged.
Capturing a complete webpage instead of requesting a map image
If your goal is a screenshot of a page that includes a live map, use a browser screenshot workflow only when you have a legitimate reason and can preserve required attribution. A screenshot records the page as rendered; it does not turn Google’s interactive tiles into a general-purpose map export. Wait for the map and other asynchronous content to finish, use a viewport large enough for the target, and test pages that show consent dialogs, bot checks, or login states.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It captures a URL with one request and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed.
For a page containing your map, the cURL request is:

The image is blank
Check the API key, enabled API, billing-enabled project, and URL encoding first. Then lower the zoom: Google notes that unavailable tiles at a requested zoom can produce a blank image. Also verify that size is present and valid.
The browser shows a broken image or an API error
Open the generated URL directly, inspect the response, and confirm the key’s application and API restrictions. An HTTP page embedding an HTTPS image can also be blocked as mixed content. Keep both the page and image on HTTPS.
The request exceeds the URL limit
Reduce marker and path data, simplify styles, or move to a server-side design that can generate a shorter request. The Static API limit is 16,384 characters for the complete URL.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The map looks too small when printed
Use scale=2 for up to 1280×1280 returned pixels while retaining the same geographic coverage. For larger output, contact Google support rather than assuming a larger request is accepted.

A screenshot contains a consent banner or popup
For a self-managed browser, dismiss the banner and wait for the map before capturing. ScreenshotNeo can accept consent banners and remove supported consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; unsupported or blocked pages can still fail and should be checked using its verdict headers.
Practical decision checklist
- Need a small, predictable image: build a Maps Static API URL.
- Need user interaction: render Maps JavaScript API and keep attribution visible.
- Need Apps Script automation: use
Maps.newStaticMap()and retrieve a URL or blob. - Need the pixels of an entire web page: use a compliant browser screenshot workflow, not a claim that JavaScript map tiles are an export API.
- Before production: test key restrictions, zoom availability, image dimensions, URL length, asynchronous loading, and Google’s current policies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can jQuery download a Google Maps JavaScript map as PNG?
jQuery can create an image element or assemble a Static API URL, but it is not a Google map-image export mechanism. Use Maps Static API for a documented image response.
Do I need billing for a Google Static Maps request?
Yes. The documented prerequisites include an API key, an enabled Maps Static API, and a billing-enabled Google Cloud project.
Recommended Free Tools
What is the largest standard Static API image?
The documented ceiling is 640×640 at scale 1, or 1280×1280 returned pixels with scale 2. Larger requests require support review, with a stated maximum of 2048×2048 subject to approval.
Can I save a live Google map and reuse it later?
Not automatically. Google’s policies restrict pre-fetching, caching, and storage in many cases and require attribution. Check the current policy and your service agreement for the specific use.
