To capture an entire webpage—not just the part currently visible—use your browser’s full-page command first. In Microsoft Edge, press Ctrl+Shift+S and choose Capture full page. In Firefox, open the screenshot tool, select Save full page, and download the image. If your browser lacks a suitable native command, install a full-page extension such as GoFullPage from the browser’s official add-on store, start the capture from its toolbar icon or menu, and export the result. Always inspect the top, middle, and bottom of the saved file, because very long or dynamic pages can produce incomplete or split output.
What a full-screen webpage capture includes
A normal screenshot records only the current viewport. A full-page (also called full-webpage or full-screen) capture scrolls through the document and combines the sections below the fold into one image or, depending on the tool, a PDF or several images. It is useful for documentation, bug reports, design reviews, offline reference, and sharing a page without asking someone to scroll.
The phrase “full-screen” can be confusing: these instructions capture the webpage, not every monitor connected to your computer. Browser chrome such as tabs and the address bar is normally excluded.
Choose the right method

Check your browser name and version before following a shortcut. Native features and extension menus change between releases, and an extension listed in one browser’s store may not be available in another.

Capture a full page in Microsoft Edge
- Open the webpage and wait for its visible content to finish loading.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+S.
- Choose Capture full page rather than a visible-area or selected-area option.
- Review the preview, make any available crop or annotation changes, and save or download the result using Edge’s current controls.
Edge’s documented command captures content beyond the screen without requiring you to scroll manually. If the shortcut does nothing, open Edge’s screenshot or Web Capture command from the browser menu and look for the same full-page choice. Microsoft notes that feature availability and behavior can vary by device, market, and browser version, so update Edge and check its current help page if the option is absent.
Capture a full page in Firefox
- Load the page you want to preserve.
- Open Firefox’s screenshot tool from the page context menu or the browser toolbar, depending on your Firefox version.
- Select Save full page.
- Choose the download command and save the resulting image.
Firefox’s native tool is sufficient for a static page and does not require an add-on. If you see only a visible-selection option, verify that you opened the page screenshot tool (not an operating-system screenshot utility) and that Firefox is current.

Use a browser extension when native capture is not enough
Install from the official store
- Open the official extension store for your browser.
- Search for a full-page screenshot extension, then open its current listing.
- Read the supported-browser information, requested permissions, privacy policy, export formats, and recent change log.
- Select Add or Install, confirm the permission dialog, and pin the extension if you want its icon permanently visible.
Do not assume that similarly named extensions have identical behavior. Store listings are the authoritative place to check the current shortcut, formats, and permissions.
Example: GoFullPage in Firefox
The GoFullPage Firefox listing describes two ways to start: click the extension icon or press Alt+Shift+P. It scrolls through the page, assembles the sections, and then offers image or PDF downloads. Follow the labels shown in your installed version; extension shortcuts and menus can change.

- Open the target page in a normal browser tab.
- Click the GoFullPage icon, or press Alt+Shift+P when that shortcut is enabled.
- Wait while the extension captures successive sections; do not switch tabs or reload the page during the process.
- Use the resulting controls to download an image or PDF.
The Firefox listing warns that exceptionally large pages can be split into multiple images. Treat that as an expected limitation rather than assuming the capture failed.
Chrome and other Chromium browsers
GoFullPage and other full-page tools are listed in the Chrome Web Store, but their controls and export choices are specific to each listing and release. One GoFullPage Chrome listing has a changelog entry dated 2025-03-19; that date describes product history, not a guarantee that every browser version exposes the same features. Read the listing you are installing and use its current toolbar command.

Prepare the page for a reliable capture
- Let content load: wait for fonts, images, and embedded components. Scroll once through pages that lazy-load content if the tool does not promise to trigger loading itself.
- Close obstructive UI: dismiss cookie notices, newsletter dialogs, chat bubbles, and login prompts when permitted. A capture records what is displayed.
- Set the intended state: choose light or dark mode, expand accordions, select a language, and sign in only when policy allows it.
- Freeze moving content: pause videos and note that carousels, advertisements, and animations can appear in different states in different sections.
- Check fixed elements: sticky headers and floating buttons may be repeated at every scroll position or cover page text.
Never capture or share passwords, payment details, private messages, health information, confidential dashboards, or other sensitive material unless you are authorized to do so. An extension may need access to page content; inspect its actual permission request rather than assuming all extensions have the same access or privacy practices.
Verify and fix an imperfect result
Check three points, not just the thumbnail
- Open the saved file at a readable zoom and inspect the top for the correct page and title.
- Inspect the middle for seams, duplicated fixed headers, missing lazy-loaded images, or abrupt changes in layout.
- Inspect the bottom for truncated text, a missing footer, and the expected end of the document.
Common symptoms and remedies

Image, PDF, and selected-area choices
Use an image when you need a quick visual reference or to paste into a ticket. Use PDF when text selection, pagination, or printing matters and your tool supports it. A selected-area capture is preferable when the page contains unrelated navigation or a very large amount of content. Store listings show that export formats differ: some extensions offer PNG or JPEG, some offer PDF, and some provide editing controls. Confirm the actual formats before installing.

When an extension is the wrong tool
Extensions are interactive and convenient, but they depend on a browser tab, local permissions, and the page’s behavior. For scheduled documentation, bulk URLs, CI jobs, or a repeatable server-side request, an API is usually easier to automate. An API still cannot guarantee access to pages that require a human challenge or authorization you have not supplied.

Cost, performance, and repeatability
- Native browser tools and most extension installs do not add an API charge, but they consume local time and memory on long pages.
- Long pages with high-resolution images are slower and larger; retina settings improve detail while increasing file size.
- For automation, set explicit timeouts, waits, viewport dimensions, and output formats so repeated captures are comparable.
- Cache behavior can make a repeated API request return an earlier result; choose a cache TTL deliberately when freshness matters.
- Keep the original URL, capture date, browser or API settings, and any authenticated-state notes with important documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a full-page screenshot include content behind a login?
Only if the browser or capture service has an authorized authenticated session and the content successfully renders. Do not share credentials or private captures.
Can I capture a page that blocks automated scrolling?
Not reliably. Browser security, bot checks, CAPTCHAs, cross-origin frames, and site-side scripts can prevent a complete capture; use an authorized access method or capture visible sections instead.
