Use a browser-level screenshot rather than trying to read the embedded document from page JavaScript. In Playwright, the direct method is await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true }). A cross-origin iframe’s rendered pixels and its DOM are different things: the browser can capture the page, but the same-origin policy restricts the parent page from inspecting the iframe document.
Capture the full page with Playwright
Playwright’s documented full-page screenshot option captures the page’s full scrollable extent. Its screenshot and frame-selection APIs serve separate purposes: use the page screenshot for the capture, and use a frame locator only if you also need to locate or interact with content inside a frame.

Use Playwright’s frameLocator to target elements inside an iframe when your test needs to wait for or interact with them. A frame locator does not take a screenshot; take the page screenshot separately.

This example illustrates the separate operations; it does not bypass cross-origin restrictions or guarantee that every frame has loaded or will appear in every screenshot.
Why cross-origin does not mean “impossible to screenshot”
The same-origin policy restricts scripts on the parent page from reading a cross-origin iframe’s document. That restriction is about access to document contents through script, not a requirement to read the DOM before asking the browser to capture rendered pixels. Avoid making a parent-page script read iframe.contentDocument as a prerequisite for a screenshot. See MDN’s explanation of the same-origin policy.

Full-page capture and frame access are therefore distinct tasks: a browser screenshot captures the page visually, while a frame locator helps automation target frame content. The official documentation describes these capabilities but does not explicitly guarantee that every cross-origin iframe state will appear in every browser, version, or dynamic-page scenario.

Capture manually in Firefox Developer Tools
For a one-off visual capture, Firefox Developer Tools documents both a screenshot control and a Web Console command for full-page capture.

- Toolbar: Enable the screenshot button in Developer Tools if it is not visible, then use it to capture the page.
- Web Console: Run
:screenshot --fullpage. Firefox documents this helper as capturing parts of the webpage beyond the current window bounds. - Inspect the result: Open the saved screenshot and check the iframe area, not just the visible viewport.
Firefox’s screenshot documentation explains full-page capture. Its separate iframe documentation covers the iframe context picker, which targets a frame for Developer Tools; it is not the full-page screenshot control.

Troubleshoot missing or incomplete iframe content
If the screenshot does not show the iframe as expected, treat it as a loading or rendering problem to investigate—not proof that cross-origin frames cannot be captured.

- The frame area is blank: Check the capture in the browser you are targeting and confirm the iframe has reached its intended load or consent state before taking the screenshot.
- The iframe appears incomplete: Check whether the frame has its own internal scrolling area. A full-page screenshot concerns the top-level page’s scrollable extent; it does not by itself establish how content inside every embedded scrolling frame will appear.
- The frame is lazy-loaded: Verify it has loaded in the target browser before capturing. A full-page option is not a guarantee that every lazy or dynamic element has been activated.
- The iframe is nested, animated, or permission-gated: Inspect the output directly and test the exact page state and browser version your workflow depends on. The cited official documentation does not promise universal results for these cases.
- Automation fails while checking the iframe DOM: Separate that failure from screenshot capture. Parent-page JavaScript cannot freely inspect a cross-origin frame; use Playwright’s frame APIs for supported automation, and take the page screenshot as its own operation.

Can Playwright take a screenshot of an iframe by itself?
The documented full-page method captures the page. Use frame APIs to locate or interact with iframe content; a frame locator is not itself a screenshot method.
