In Playwright, fullPage: true captures the full scrollable document, but it does not guarantee that the site’s scroll-triggered behavior has run.
Why a full-page screenshot can still miss content
A full-page screenshot and a scrolling pass solve different problems. Full-page capture determines how much of the document goes into the image. Scrolling can trigger scripts that load, reveal, or replace content. A readiness check helps establish that the content appeared before capture; inspecting the saved image helps catch anything that did not.
Playwright’s documentation defines fullPage: true as capturing the full scrollable page, as though it fit on one tall screen. A Playwright issue report describes cases where off-screen content is rendered for a full-page screenshot without moving the visual viewport, so behavior that depends on real scrolling may not run. The report discusses possible issues involving lazy-loaded images or iframes, IntersectionObserver, reveal effects, and virtualized lists; it does not establish that every page or browser has the same behavior.
For reliable results, distinguish four steps: capture the whole document, trigger the page’s scrolling behavior, wait for the content you need, and inspect the output.

Capture a changing page with Playwright
Use a scrolling pass before the full-page screenshot. Replace the example locator and completion condition with signals that match the page you are capturing.

Choose a completion signal that reflects the page’s actual content—for example, the expected section, an item count, or an explicit end marker. The Playwright documentation provides the scrolling primitives, but there is no universal wait duration or scroll distance that works for every site.

Infinite feeds and nested scroll areas
An infinite feed may have no footer. Repeat scrolling and checking for newly loaded items until the page exposes an end marker or the content you need is present. Avoid an arbitrary fixed number of scrolls: the amount of content loaded per step varies by page.

If scrolling the document does not trigger loading, the content may live in a nested scrollable panel. Scroll that panel instead. Playwright documents bringing an element near the bottom into view, using page.mouse.wheel(), and changing a chosen scrolling element’s scrollTop. Use the method that targets the actual scrolling area, then wait for a page-specific signal before capture.

Manual capture in Firefox
- Open Firefox Developer Tools.
- Open Developer Tools Settings and find Available Toolbox Buttons.
- Enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- If the page reveals or loads content on scroll, scroll through the relevant content before using the screenshot control.
- Check the saved image in the browser’s Downloads directory for missing or repeated sections.
Check the screenshot before relying on it
Open the image at a useful zoom and check the areas that are most likely to fail: content that appeared after scrolling, images near the bottom, the end of a feed, and transitions between long sections. Look for blank images, missing list items, duplicated areas, or content that changed during capture. The official capture controls describe how to make a full-page image; they do not guarantee that every site’s dynamic content will be complete.
Playwright also supports screenshot styling that can hide or modify dynamic elements for a more repeatable test image. That changes the page’s rendered appearance; it does not load content that never appeared.
Troubleshoot missing or repeated content
- Images are blank: Scroll them into view before capture and wait for a page-specific image or content signal. A full-page capture option alone does not prove that lazy-loaded assets have finished loading.
- A section that appears on scroll is absent: Scroll the page or the relevant container before capturing. Check that the site has actually revealed the section, rather than relying on
fullPage: true. - An infinite list stops early: Continue scrolling while checking for newly added items. Stop when the needed items or an explicit end marker appears.
- A wait times out: The locator may not match the page, the expected content may not have loaded, or the page may use a nested scroller. Confirm the locator and scrolling target, then select a completion signal the page actually provides.
- Content appears more than once or joins poorly: If using stitched viewport images, changing content or layout can produce duplicates or seams. Inspect the joins; stitching is a fallback, not a guaranteed correction.
- The image is complete but visually inconsistent: Dynamic content may have changed while capture was in progress. For repeatable test images, consider screenshot styling to hide or modify dynamic elements, while recognizing that this changes the appearance.
