Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To capture an entire webpage—not just the visible browser window—use a browser automation API and enable its full-page option. In Puppeteer or Playwright, the essential setting is fullPage: true. Chrome’s --screenshot command is useful for a quick viewport image, but --window-size does not request the full scrollable document.
What “full-page” means in Headless Chrome
A viewport screenshot records only the area that would be visible without scrolling. A full-page screenshot expands the capture to the page’s scrollable height, including content below the fold. This distinction matters for documentation, visual regression checks, archival images and long landing pages.
Chrome’s command-line --screenshot flag saves an image, while --window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHT controls the viewport dimensions. The command does not, by itself, document a full-document-height capture. For a complete page, use Puppeteer or Playwright’s fullPage option, or manage dimensions directly through the Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP).
Choose the capture method
| Method | Best fit | Important setting | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome Headless CLI | One-off viewport image with almost no scripting | --screenshot, --window-size |
Does not provide the same full-page API option as Puppeteer or Playwright |
| Puppeteer | Node.js automation and Chrome-specific workflows | fullPage: true, path |
Requires a JavaScript project and browser launch |
| Playwright | Automation with full-page capture and selectable pixel scale | fullPage: true, scale |
Requires Playwright setup; browser choice adds configuration |
| Chrome DevTools Protocol | Low-level control from an existing Chrome connection | Page.captureScreenshot, captureBeyondViewport |
You must manage dimensions, readiness and protocol details yourself |
Fast viewport screenshot with Chrome’s CLI
Use the CLI when you need the current viewport rather than the entire document. The following example sets a 412-by-892 CSS-pixel viewport and writes screenshot.png to the current directory:

chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=412,892 https://example.com/
On systems where the executable is named differently, substitute the local binary, such as google-chrome or chromium. Add a timeout when a page must be given a bounded amount of time to load:
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1440,900 --timeout=10000 https://example.com/
A timeout is a deadline, not proof that every script or image finished. The browser may capture when the deadline expires. For client-rendered pages or lazy-loaded sections, a readiness condition in Puppeteer or Playwright is safer.
Full-page capture with Puppeteer
Install and launch Chrome
Create a Node.js project and install Puppeteer:
npm install puppeteer
This complete script opens a URL, waits for network activity to settle, waits for a meaningful selector, then writes a full-page PNG:
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.goto('https://example.com/', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle0',
timeout: 60000
});
await page.waitForSelector('main', { timeout: 30000 });
await page.screenshot({
path: 'page.png',
fullPage: true
});
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
fullPage: true asks Puppeteer to capture the full page. path writes the file; if you omit it, Puppeteer returns screenshot data instead, which you can send to storage or another service.

networkidle0 means no active network connections for the relevant idle period, but it is not a universal “page is complete” signal. Single-page applications can render after network idle, and lazy-loaded images may appear only after scrolling. Wait for a selector that represents the content you need:
await page.goto('https://example.com/catalog', {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
timeout: 60000
});
await page.waitForSelector('[data-catalog-ready="true"]', {
timeout: 30000
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'catalog.png', fullPage: true });
If the site has no reliable marker, a short, deliberate delay can supplement navigation, but a selector tied to the actual content is usually more meaningful than an arbitrary sleep. For pages that load images as they enter the viewport, scroll through the document before capturing:

await page.evaluate(async () => {
await new Promise(resolve => {
let y = 0;
const step = 600;
const timer = setInterval(() => {
window.scrollBy(0, step);
y += step;
if (y >= document.body.scrollHeight) {
clearInterval(timer);
window.scrollTo(0, 0);
resolve();
}
}, 100);
});
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'lazy-page.png', fullPage: true });
This causes scroll-triggered code to run, but it cannot guarantee that every site’s lazy-loading strategy has completed. Adjust the readiness check to the application you are capturing.
Useful Puppeteer adjustments
- Viewport: set width, height and
deviceScaleFactorbefore navigation when responsive layout matters. - Authentication: create a context or set cookies before visiting the target URL.
- Stable output: disable animations with injected CSS when motion causes visual differences.
- Output format: use
type: 'jpeg'and a quality value when a smaller photographic image is preferable. - Element-only image: replace
fullPage: truewithclipor an element bounding box when the whole document is not required.
Full-page capture with Playwright
Install and run
npm install playwright
npx playwright install chromium
Playwright uses the same full-page option:
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
await page.goto('https://example.com/', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle',
timeout: 60000
});
await page.locator('main').waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 30000 });
await page.screenshot({
path: 'page.png',
fullPage: true,
scale: 'css'
});
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Playwright’s scale controls output pixels. css produces one image pixel per CSS pixel; device uses device-pixel resolution and can make a high-DPI image substantially larger. Choose css for predictable dimensions in visual tests and documentation, or device when you specifically need a retina-style asset.

Handling lazy content in Playwright
Use a page-specific locator, then capture:
await page.goto('https://example.com/article', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.locator('article .last-section').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'article.png', fullPage: true });
If sections are loaded by scrolling, perform the same controlled scroll strategy as in Puppeteer, then wait for the final section or an application-ready marker.
Using the Chrome DevTools Protocol directly
CDP exposes the Page.captureScreenshot command for lower-level integrations. Its captureBeyondViewport option defaults to false, so a direct client must explicitly manage capture dimensions and beyond-viewport behavior. A typical flow is:
- Connect to a running Chrome instance over CDP.
- Enable the Page domain and navigate to the URL.
- Wait for a document-ready or application-specific condition.
- Read layout metrics to determine the document dimensions.
- Set the capture clip or viewport deliberately.
- Call
Page.captureScreenshotwith the required format and beyond-viewport setting.
CDP is appropriate when your service already speaks the protocol or needs controls that a high-level library does not expose conveniently. For a new script, Puppeteer or Playwright generally reduces setup and error handling.
Preventing incomplete or misleading images
Fixed and sticky elements
Headers, chat buttons and cookie notices can remain fixed while the page is captured, appearing repeatedly or covering content. Whether to hide them depends on your purpose. You can inject CSS for a controlled capture:

await page.addStyleTag({

.chat-widget, .cookie-banner { display: none !important; }
`
});
Use selectors that belong to the site you own or are authorized to automate. A selector that matches the wrong element can remove real content.
Very long or dynamically growing documents
Full-page capture requires the browser to represent the document’s layout at capture time. Infinite feeds, continuously refreshing ads and content that expands while you capture can produce inconsistent heights. Freeze or stub those behaviors where possible, and capture only after the final content marker appears.
Access controls and bot checks
Login walls, CAPTCHAs, robots controls and geo-restricted content may prevent the intended page from rendering. Do not treat a screenshot of an interstitial as a successful capture. Detect the expected title or selector and fail the job clearly when it is absent.
Reliability, performance and cost considerations
- Readiness beats arbitrary delay: wait for the selector, state or image count that defines success for your page.
- Reuse browsers for batches: keep one browser process and create separate pages or contexts instead of launching Chrome for every URL.
- Control output size: CSS-pixel scale, viewport width and image format affect memory and transfer time. JPEG can reduce size at the cost of loss, while PNG preserves sharp text.
- Set explicit deadlines: navigation, selector waits and the overall job should have bounded timeouts so a stalled site cannot occupy a worker indefinitely.
- Record diagnostics: save the URL, viewport, browser version, readiness condition and error text with each artifact so a mismatch can be reproduced.
There is no universal maximum page height, completion time or reliability percentage established by the browser API references. Treat those values as workload- and site-dependent rather than promises.
Troubleshooting common failures
The image shows only the top of the page
Cause: the script used a normal screenshot or the CLI viewport command. Fix: use fullPage: true in Puppeteer or Playwright. With CDP, configure capture dimensions and captureBeyondViewport deliberately.
Images or sections are missing
Cause: lazy loading or client rendering had not finished. Fix: wait for a selector representing the final content, scroll to trigger lazy loaders, and then capture. Increase the timeout only after adding a meaningful readiness condition.

The screenshot is blank or an error page
Cause: navigation failed, the site returned a bot check, or the page required authentication. Fix: inspect the response and page title, verify cookies or authorization, and fail the job when the expected content selector is absent.
The page layout changes between runs
Cause: responsive breakpoints, animations, rotating ads or device scale differences. Fix: set a fixed viewport and scale, disable animations, and control or block nonessential dynamic content where your authorization permits.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Navigation times out
Cause: a slow resource, a never-ending connection or an unreachable host. Fix: use an explicit timeout, choose a less strict initial wait such as domcontentloaded, then wait for the specific selector needed for the image. Log the failing URL and response details.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It accepts a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It handles the browser workflow for you, including full-page capture and lazy-image loading.
One request is enough:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all parameters. Python and Node.js examples are also available for applications that need retries, queues or post-processing:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

- Need repeatable hosted captures without maintaining browsers? Use ScreenshotNeo and inspect its verdict and billing headers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Chrome’s --window-size to capture the entire page?
No. It sets the viewport dimensions. Use Puppeteer or Playwright with fullPage: true for the scrollable document.
Why does network idle still miss content?
A page can render after network activity becomes idle, and lazy-loaded elements may wait for scrolling. Wait for an application-specific selector or readiness marker.
Should I choose PNG or JPEG?
PNG keeps text and interface edges sharp. JPEG is often smaller for photographic pages but introduces lossy compression.
What does Playwright’s scale option change?
css outputs one pixel per CSS pixel; device uses device-pixel resolution and can create a larger high-DPI image.
