To capture a webpage that extends below the browser window, use your browser’s full-page screenshot command—not the ordinary visible-area capture. Firefox and Edge expose a direct full-page option; Chrome provides Capture full size screenshot in Developer Tools. Save the result, then inspect it for missing sections, especially on interactive web apps.
What a complete website screenshot includes
A complete, or full-page, screenshot renders the document from its top edge to its bottom edge in one image. It is different from a viewport screenshot, which records only what is visible in the browser window. Select the full-page or entire-page command whenever content continues below the fold.
Full-page capture is useful for design reviews, bug reports, archiving, documentation and sharing a long article without stitching separate images together. It does not guarantee that every interactive state, lazy-loaded component or authenticated section will appear exactly as it does while you scroll. Treat the saved file as an artifact to verify, not as proof that every application state was captured.
Prepare the page before capturing
- Open the exact URL and wait for the initial load to finish.
- Dismiss consent dialogs, newsletter prompts and chat windows that cover content you need. If a dialog is part of the state you want to document, leave it open instead.
- Sign in and select the correct account, workspace, language, theme and date range before starting the capture.
- For pages that load content while scrolling, scroll through the document once if practical, then return to the top. This can trigger images or data that are otherwise loaded only on demand.
- Use a stable window size and zoom level. Browser zoom changes the pixel dimensions and can make a very long image difficult to inspect.
Firefox: use Take Screenshot
Context-menu method
- On Windows or Linux, right-click the page. On a Mac, use a two-finger tap on the trackpad.
- Choose Take Screenshot.
- Select Save full page in the screenshot controls.
- Review the preview, then choose the download control to save the image, or copy it to the clipboard.
Mozilla’s desktop instructions describe both copying and downloading from the preview. The full-page choice is essential; a visible-area choice records only the current viewport.

Developer Tools button
- Open Firefox Developer Tools.
- Open Developer Tools settings and locate Available Toolbox Buttons.
- Enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Click the new camera button in the toolbox. Firefox saves the resulting image to your Downloads folder.
Mozilla documents this as a separate Developer Tools workflow. The button is not enabled in the documented default setup.
Web Console command
Open the Web Console and run:
:screenshot --fullpageFirefox’s helper can also take a delayed capture, set a device-pixel ratio, choose a filename, copy to the clipboard and target a CSS selector. When repeating captures, use a new filename: reusing the same filename overwrites the earlier image.
Microsoft Edge: Web Capture
- Open the Settings and more menu (the three dots) and choose Web Capture, or press Ctrl+Shift+S.
- Select Capture full page.
- Review the generated image.
- Save it to a file, copy it, or annotate it using the available controls.
Edge’s Web Capture also offers a selected-area mode. Choose full page when the document extends below the viewport; selected area is for a bounded region. Microsoft notes that Web Capture availability and functionality can vary by device, market and browser version, so a missing command may reflect the installed build or platform rather than a page error.
Chrome: Capture full size screenshot in Developer Tools
- Open Developer Tools with Command+Option+I on macOS or Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows and Linux.
- Open the Developer Tools command menu with Command+Shift+P on macOS or Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows and Linux.
- Search for screenshot.
- Choose Capture full size screenshot. Chrome saves the image to Downloads.
A guide updated April 20, 2026 reports that results can differ between sites. In its examples, Google Docs captured only the visible window while another page captured its full length. Web applications that use virtual scrolling, canvases or their own scrolling panes may not expose a single document height to the browser. Always open the downloaded file and check the bottom, major sections and images.

Safari: verify the current workflow first
The available material does not verify a current, exact Safari procedure. Safari and macOS versions can change Web Inspector commands and menu labels, so do not rely on an unverified shortcut for production documentation. If Safari is mandatory, consult the Apple documentation for your specific release and confirm the resulting file contains the entire document before sharing it.
Choose the right capture method

No physical screenshot device is required; these are browser software features. A dedicated service becomes useful when you need repeatable captures, automation, authenticated request headers, or a result independent of a developer’s local browser.
Inspect the saved image
Open the file at a comfortable zoom and check:
- The page header and the final section are both present.
- Images, charts and embedded fonts have loaded rather than appearing blank.
- Sticky navigation has not been repeated over every segment.
- Tables, code blocks and horizontally scrolling regions are readable.
- No consent dialog, login redirect or bot-check page replaced the intended content.
- The file type and dimensions meet the destination’s limits. Extremely long PNGs can be large; JPEG or WebP may be more practical when lossless text rendering is not required.
Troubleshooting full-page captures
The command is missing
In Firefox, use the documented context-menu command or enable the Developer Tools button under Available Toolbox Buttons. In Edge, open Web Capture from the three-dot menu and try the documented shortcut. In Chrome, make sure Developer Tools has focus before pressing the command-menu shortcut; otherwise the browser may open a different command palette.
The result stops at the viewport
Confirm that you selected Save full page, Capture full page or Capture full size screenshot, not a visible-area option. If the page is an application with its own scroll container, the browser may see only the outer shell. Capture the relevant element in Firefox or use an automated renderer that can target a selector and wait for content.

Images or sections are blank
Wait longer, reload without a busy extension and allow lazy content to load. Scroll through the page once before returning to the top. If the missing content depends on a network request, geolocation, cookies or an authenticated session, preserve those conditions when capturing.
A consent banner or chat widget covers the page
Dismiss it before capture when it is not part of the evidence. If the overlay returns on every reload, use a capture workflow that can accept consent and hide known overlays before rendering.
Repeated Firefox captures replace one another
The Web Console screenshot helper overwrites an existing image when you reuse its filename. Supply a fresh filename for each run.
The image is too large to open or share
Reduce browser zoom before capturing, choose a format supported by your workflow, or capture a specific element instead of the whole document. For automated jobs, resize the image after rendering or generate a PDF when a paginated document is more appropriate.

Reliability and workflow recommendations
- For a one-off static page, use Firefox or Edge and manually verify the file.
- For Chrome-based testing, record the browser version and page type because application behavior can differ from ordinary documents.
- For recurring reports, use deterministic viewport, timezone, geolocation, cookies and wait conditions so two runs are comparable.
- Keep the original URL, capture time and resulting file together. A screenshot is a visual record, while the URL and timestamp explain the state that produced it.
- Use a PDF when pagination, selectable text or a print-oriented hand-off matters more than one very tall image.

Can I capture a page without installing an extension?
Yes. Firefox, Edge and Chrome provide built-in full-page workflows; the steps above use only their existing menus and Developer Tools.
Why does a web app behave differently from an ordinary article?
Many applications render content inside a nested scroll area, virtualize rows or draw on a canvas. The browser may not expose the full logical document height, so the capture can end at the visible window or omit off-screen data.
Should I use PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF?
Use PNG for crisp text and diagrams, JPEG or WebP for smaller photographic images, and PDF when paginated sharing or printing is the priority.
