To call a Spring Boot REST endpoint from a browser, send a jQuery AJAX request whose URL, HTTP method, and payload match the Spring MVC handler. For JSON, set contentType: "application/json", serialize the request body with JSON.stringify(), and bind it in Spring with @RequestBody. The examples below use an illustrative endpoint and DTO; replace them with your application’s API contract.
How the browser-to-Spring request works
jQuery runs in the browser and makes an HTTP request to the application. Spring Boot handles that request on the server through a mapped Spring MVC controller method. This is different from Spring code making an outbound request to a third-party API.
For the request to reach the intended handler, the browser’s URL and HTTP method must match its mapping. The request body’s format must also match the handler’s expected input, and the response format should match what the browser expects.
Call a JSON endpoint with jQuery AJAX
This illustrative example sends a JSON object to POST /api/example and expects JSON back. The route and name field are examples, not requirements for your application.

}@RequestBody tells Spring MVC to read and deserialize the HTTP request body through an HttpMessageConverter. @RestController applies response-body behavior to handler methods, so Spring writes the returned object into the HTTP response through a converter. Available media types depend on the application’s MVC converter configuration.

});Here, contentType describes the format being sent to the server. JSON.stringify() turns the JavaScript object into JSON text for the request body. dataType: "json" tells jQuery to parse a successful response as JSON; the success callback then receives the parsed value as an object. If you omit dataType, jQuery may infer the response handling from the response MIME type.

Choose JSON or form parameters to match the endpoint
Do not send every kind of input as JSON by default. Use the format the endpoint contract expects.

Spring advises using @RequestParam for request parameters. Request-parameter parsing can consume the servlet request body, so avoid mixing it with assumptions that the same body will also be available for @RequestBody.

Handle cross-origin requests only when needed
A page and API served from the same origin do not need CORS configuration. If the page and API have different origins, the browser applies its cross-origin rules and Spring MVC must allow the relevant origin, route, and HTTP method.
Allow one handler with @CrossOrigin
Use a handler-level annotation when the exception should apply to a specific endpoint. Configure the actual page origin and only the methods the endpoint needs.

Configure CORS globally
Use a global MVC CORS mapping when a consistent policy should apply across multiple routes. Scope allowed origins and methods to the endpoints and browser applications that actually need them. Spring’s current CORS reference is for Framework 7.0.9; projects using a different Spring Framework version should check the reference matching their dependency version.

For credentialed cross-origin requests, use trusted explicit origins or an appropriate origin pattern and configure credentials deliberately. Do not combine credentials with an unrestricted wildcard origin; Spring documents the additional trust and security implications.

jQuery’s API documentation says, “The error callback option is invoked, if the request fails.” Use that callback along with the browser’s Network panel to identify what happened.
- Check the URL and method: Confirm the request reaches the same path and HTTP method declared by the controller mapping.
- Inspect the request body and content type: For a JSON endpoint, verify the body is valid JSON and the request uses the media type the handler accepts.
- Check the response status and body: An HTTP error can result from server-side validation, authentication, or other application behavior. Spring normally returns HTTP 400 for validation errors on a validated
@RequestBody. - Look for a CORS rejection: If the call works from a same-origin page but fails from a page on another origin, inspect the browser console and Network panel, then allow only the page origin, route, and method required.

Match the Spring reference to the Framework version used by your Spring Boot project.
