Apple does not provide a system-wide Apple Pencil calibration setting or a calibration procedure. If the Pencil will not connect or respond, use Apple’s pairing troubleshooting steps; if strokes, pressure, or tilt behave unexpectedly, first check compatibility and whether the app or Pencil model supports the behavior you expect.
Is there an Apple Pencil calibration setting?
Apple’s Apple Pencil pairing troubleshooting guide covers compatibility, charging, pairing, and service. It does not describe a calibration control or sequence. Pairing troubleshooting may help when a Pencil is not connecting or responding, but Apple does not present it as a fix for every inaccurate stroke, pressure issue, or app-specific behavior.
Check the Pencil, iPad, and behavior you expect
Confirm the model is compatible
Apple Pencil models work with particular iPad models. On the iPad, open Settings > General > About to identify the iPad, then check Apple’s current compatibility information before choosing a Pencil or replacement. The Apple product comparison page describes Pencil features but is not a complete compatibility matrix.
Check whether the feature is supported
Apple’s Apple Pencil comparison lists features such as precision, low latency, tilt sensitivity, and palm rejection. It lists pressure sensitivity for Apple Pencil Pro, but not for Apple Pencil (USB-C). A difference in pressure response may therefore reflect the Pencil model rather than a calibration problem. The comparison does not diagnose an individual Pencil or establish an app’s controls.

Separate connection problems from drawing behavior
If the Pencil does not pair or respond, follow the connection checks below. If it connects but strokes look wrong only in a particular app, Apple’s pairing guide does not establish that pairing steps will fix the app behavior. Check the app’s own drawing settings and confirm the expected feature is supported by the Pencil model.
Troubleshoot an Apple Pencil that will not pair or respond
Apple recommends checking the iPad update, Pencil compatibility, charge, and connection method for the Pencil generation. If it still will not pair, follow this sequence from Apple’s pairing guide:

- Confirm that the Pencil model is compatible with the iPad.
- Charge the Pencil if necessary.
- Connect the Pencil using the method for its generation, and leave it connected while restarting the iPad.
- After restart, open Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is on.
- If Apple Pencil appears under My Devices, tap its information button, choose Forget This Device, then reconnect the Pencil and tap Pair.
- If the Pair button does not appear, leave the Pencil connected for a minute to charge, then try pairing again.
- For Apple Pencil Pro or Apple Pencil (2nd generation), remove the iPad case or cover and retry pairing.
Apple says, “If the Pair button still doesn’t appear, you might need service.” Contact Apple Support or arrange service if the pairing button remains unavailable after these checks.

When replacing a Pencil, compare the feature and compatibility
Buying another Pencil is not a calibration method. Before replacing one, identify the iPad and verify compatibility against Apple’s current information. Compare the feature that matters to your work—such as pressure sensitivity, tilt sensitivity, magnetic attachment, or wireless pairing and charging—rather than assuming all Pencil models behave the same.
