Before changing a calibration offset, check the station’s placement and compare its sensors with suitable reference instruments under the same stable conditions. A saturated-salt test can check humidity at one point, but it does not calibrate temperature or provide traceable calibration.

Why your station may disagree with another reading

A home weather station measures the conditions at its own location. Sun exposure, a nearby wall, a heat source, or restricted airflow can affect its readings; a regional forecast or distant airport may describe a different microclimate. Davis cautions against comparing a station directly with a TV weather report for this reason (Davis weather station installation guidance).

Check for those placement issues and visible contamination before adjusting anything. A mismatch alone does not show that the sensor needs an offset.

How to check temperature and humidity readings

Compare temperature in the same conditions

  1. Use a suitable thermometer with a stated accuracy. Put it close to the station’s temperature sensor, or place both instruments in the same stable environment with comparable shielding and airflow.
  2. Keep both away from direct sun and localized heat. Allow the readings to settle before comparing them.
  3. Interpret the difference in light of the comparison thermometer’s accuracy. A consumer thermometer can reveal whether readings disagree, but it is not a calibration standard unless its accuracy and traceability support that use.

Compare humidity in the same conditions

  1. Place the station’s humidity sensor and a comparison hygrometer together in stable conditions.
  2. Allow time for both readings to equilibrate before comparing them.
  3. Consider the stated tolerances of both instruments. A comparator with unknown accuracy cannot establish which sensor is wrong.

Ambient Weather’s sensor comparison guidance discusses interpreting differences in light of sensor tolerances. A side-by-side comparison is useful for checking agreement, but it does not establish which instrument is correct if the comparator is inaccurate.

Can a saturated-salt test check humidity?

Yes, it can provide a practical check near one humidity point. Ambient Weather describes making a saturated salt mixture, sealing it with the sensor, leaving the setup undisturbed for 96 hours, then comparing the reading with about 75% relative humidity (RH), taking the sensor’s rated tolerance into account (Ambient Weather’s salt-test instructions). Follow the instructions for your sensor; check that it can safely be removed or placed in the enclosure before starting.

That home procedure is a humidity check, not a temperature calibration or proof of traceable calibration. It gives a check at one point, and the reference humidity depends on temperature. The World Meteorological Organization-hosted humidity chapter notes that nominal humidity values for saturated salt solutions are not traceable to a primary standard (WMO-hosted humidity measurement chapter).

Controlled salt-chamber procedures illustrate why casual tests can mislead: Vaisala’s professional guidance uses temperature-specific reference values and calls for temperature stabilization and time for readings to settle. Its HMK15 instructions also warn against warming the probe or calibrator through handling or exposing them to localized heat (Vaisala HMK15 user guide; Vaisala humidity calibration instructions). A rushed or temperature-unstable setup may not give a meaningful comparison.

Which checking or adjustment method fits?

Method What it can tell you Main limitation
Side-by-side comparison Whether two instruments agree in the same conditions. The comparison instrument may also be inaccurate; both readings need to stabilize. Ambient Weather guidance
Saturated-salt humidity check Whether a humidity sensor is near a reference point. Checks one humidity point; temperature and equilibrium matter, and a household setup is not traceable calibration. Ambient Weather; WMO-hosted chapter
Manufacturer console or app offset Whether a supported displayed reading can be corrected. Controls and whether the offset carries through to other services vary by model and platform. Davis calibration guidance; AcuRite reading-adjustment guidance
Professional humidity calibrator or service Controlled checks at selected humidity points. Requires specialized equipment and procedure; it is generally more than an occasional home check calls for. Vaisala HMK15 guide

How to apply a temperature or humidity offset

Offset controls are model-specific. Davis documents calibration offsets for Vantage Pro2; AcuRite documents reading adjustments for supported systems and notes that readings shared to some services may not include the offset. Consult the instructions for your exact station model and the destination where you view its data: a correction in one console or app may not change readings elsewhere (Davis calibration guidance; AcuRite reading-adjustment guidance).

  1. Confirm the model and verify that its manual or app supports an offset for the sensor you want to adjust.
  2. Use the maker’s stated console, app, or software controls. Do not rely on a generic button sequence.
  3. Record the original setting and the amount changed so you can reverse the adjustment if the comparison proves unsuitable.
  4. Check the resulting reading where you actually use the data, including any connected service.

Do not change an offset merely to match a media report or a nearby station. First establish that the reference instrument is suitable and the comparison conditions are shared.

When an offset is not the fix

If a sensor is contaminated, damaged, unusually slow to respond, or persistently disagrees with a suitable reference, a large offset may mask a fault rather than correct it. Vaisala’s industrial probe guidance recognizes adjustment limits and, for some out-of-range cases, service or probe replacement (Vaisala humidity calibration instructions). For a home station, ask its manufacturer about cleaning, replacement, or service rather than applying an adjustment beyond the model’s stated range.
