Start with the video bitrate your encoder sends to YouTube—not your download speed. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations are 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60; a general Livestream rule of thumb is to have twice the target bitrate available as upload speed. That makes those settings planning targets of 20 Mbps and 24 Mbps, respectively. The 2× margin is general advice, not a YouTube requirement or guarantee.
Calculate the upload speed your stream needs
- Choose the stream settings. Note the incoming resolution, frame rate, and video codec configured in the encoder.
- Find the matching YouTube bitrate recommendation. Use the H.264 or AV1/H.265 row that matches those settings in YouTube Help’s live encoder settings table. The recommendations below were current when accessed on October 3, 2026; YouTube’s page does not state a publication year, so check it again before setting up a broadcast.
- Use that bitrate as the sustained stream load. It is the encoder’s video upload requirement, not a target for download speed.
- Allow headroom. Livestream’s general rule of thumb is to have twice as much upload speed available as the target stream bitrate. This is a planning guideline, not a YouTube specification, and it does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming.
- Check other traffic and test the actual setup. Account for devices sharing the church’s uplink, then test from the encoder computer, on the connection and at the time you expect to stream.
H.264 recommendations and 2× planning examples
The first figure in each row is YouTube’s recommended incoming bitrate. The second is the derived available-upload planning target using Livestream’s 2× rule; it is arithmetic, not a separate YouTube recommendation.
| Incoming video setting | YouTube H.264 recommendation | 2× available-upload planning target |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 16 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 20 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 14 Mbps | 28 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 17 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 4K30 | 42 Mbps | 84 Mbps |
| 4K60 | 50 Mbps | 100 Mbps |
YouTube’s table also gives codec-specific recommendations for AV1/H.265: 15 Mbps at 1440p30, 24 Mbps at 1440p60, 30 Mbps at 4K30, and 35 Mbps at 4K60. These are not interchangeable with the H.264 values; match the table to the encoder’s actual codec. YouTube also lists minimum bitrates, but the figures here are its recommended targets, not the minimums.

Separate upload speed from monthly data use
Upload speed is a rate; monthly data use is the total transferred over time. For a steady stream, a useful decimal estimate is:

Bitrate in Mbps × 0.45 = approximately GB per hour
Multiply by the number of hours streamed to estimate payload volume. For example, a 10 Mbps stream uses about 4.5 GB per hour, 108 GB per day, and 3,240 GB (3.24 TB) over 30 days. These are calculations from the bitrate, not published church-streaming usage statistics. Actual measured traffic can differ because of protocol overhead, reconnects, and how an ISP or router accounts for data.

- Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
- Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
A connection may have sufficient upload capacity yet still be unsuitable for nonstop streaming if its data cap is too low. Check the church’s specific plan and its data-accounting terms; those vary by provider and location.
Test the connection and encoder before relying on them
Measure the upload path that will actually carry the stream
YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate. Test from the encoder computer and connection, not just from another device or a different network. A general speed-test result is a snapshot; repeat tests at representative service times to see whether available upload changes when the church network is busy.

Livestream’s help guidance calls a direct Ethernet connection to a dedicated network the most reliable internet connection for streaming. Wired Ethernet can avoid some local wireless interference, but it cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by the ISP. Other church devices using the same uplink also reduce the capacity available to the encoder.
Verify the stream settings and live health
- Use the bitrate recommendation for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec, and configure constant bitrate encoding.
- YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery.
- Use AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends keyframes every 2 seconds and says they should be no more than 4 seconds apart.
- Run a preflight with representative worship audio and motion. YouTube recommends testing the upload bitrate and monitoring stream health messages while live.
- Use YouTube’s stream-health indications to investigate configuration issues such as low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, or missing audio. These checks help identify stream problems; they do not measure or guarantee the church’s internet capacity.
Choose settings the tested connection can sustain
Higher resolution, frame rate, or codec-specific bitrate recommendations can increase the required upstream load. Choose the highest setting your tested connection can support reliably with headroom, rather than selecting a setting from download speed or an isolated best-case test. If the uplink is shared or variable, a lower, stable setting may be more dependable than a higher one with little margin.

The bitrate being calculated is the incoming encoder-to-YouTube stream. YouTube transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers, so this is not the downstream bandwidth each viewer needs.
Troubleshoot common bandwidth and stream problems
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Stream health reports low bitrate or the stream buffers | Available upload is below the sustained encoder load, or fluctuates under congestion. | Retest upload from the encoder at service time; check shared network use; compare the encoder bitrate with the matching YouTube recommendation; reduce the stream setting if the tested link cannot sustain it. |
| Speed test looks adequate, but the live stream is unstable | The test may not represent service-time congestion or the actual encoder network path. | Test on the encoder computer and intended connection, repeat at relevant times, and use Ethernet where practical. |
| Video quality or motion does not match the configured stream | Encoder frame rate, resolution, bitrate, or codec may not match the intended setting. | Check the encoder configuration against YouTube’s codec-specific table and inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages. |
| Viewers or the encoder report missing audio | Audio may be absent or misconfigured at the encoder. | Check the audio input and encoder’s AAC or MP3 output, then confirm whether YouTube flags missing audio. |
| The internet link streams successfully but the monthly bill or cap is a concern | Data volume accumulates continuously even when the upload rate is stable. | Estimate volume with bitrate × 0.45 × hours, then confirm the applicable ISP plan cap and accounting method. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a church that wants a prerecorded worship video or playlist to loop on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded video rather than broadcasting a camera feed, so it is not a substitute for a live service from the sanctuary. Once running, your computer and home or church connection do not have to stay on.
