To decide whether Amazon Prime is worth renewing, add up the realistic cost of benefits you actually used or expect to use, then subtract your membership fee and any separately paid add-ons. Compare the benefits with what you would have paid for instead—not with advertised retail values or everything Prime makes available.
How do you calculate whether Prime is worth it?
Use one consistent period, usually the next 12 months, and use the renewal or account price for your membership type. A simple estimate is:
Estimated net value = realistic value of benefits actually used − Prime membership fee − separately paid add-ons

A positive result means the benefits you counted appear to exceed the fees for that period; a negative result means they do not. This is a personal estimate, not an exact accounting measure: substitute services may differ, and household members may share some benefits.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
- Choose the period. Use the coming year if you are deciding whether to renew annually. For a shorter expected membership, compare costs and benefits over that same shorter period.
- Find your actual Prime fee. Check your Amazon account or renewal notice for the price and billing option that applies to you. Do not rely on an old price found online.
- List benefits you used—or have a realistic plan to use. Include only benefits relevant to your chosen period. Availability and conditions can vary by geography, plan, account, and date, so check the benefits shown in your account.
- Price the alternative. For each benefit, ask: “What would I have paid, or what would I reasonably buy instead, if I did not have this benefit?” Use the cost of that realistic alternative.
- Subtract separate charges. Include optional subscriptions and add-ons you pay for in addition to Prime when calculating the combined cost.
- Add the defensible values and compare. A spreadsheet or ordinary calculator is enough. Record how confident you are in each estimate, and use a conservative figure when the alternative is uncertain.
What value should you assign to each Prime benefit?
Amazon’s Prime benefits page describes benefits including delivery, Prime Video, Amazon Music, and Prime Day. The page documents what may be available, not a universal dollar value for every member. Count only the value that changes your actual spending or replaces something you would otherwise purchase.
| Benefit | What to count | What not to count | Confidence check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delivery | Shipping charges you would actually have paid, or the value of a delivery option you would otherwise choose and pay for. | Every shipment’s hypothetical retail shipping price when you would have chosen free shipping, waited, or made the purchase anyway without a charge. | High when you can identify a specific avoided fee; lower when you are estimating what you might have done. |
| Prime Video | The cost of a streaming substitute you would genuinely buy for the same period, adjusted for differences that matter to you. | The full price of another service if you would not subscribe to it, or a value for content you did not watch. | Consider whether the Prime Video catalog actually replaces a paid subscription for you. |
| Amazon Music | The cost of a music service you would otherwise pay for, if the included listening meets your needs. | The price of a full-featured plan if the included benefit does not provide the features or listening experience you would buy. | Check the current Amazon Music FAQ for the distinction between Music Prime and the separate Music Unlimited subscription and for current playback conditions. |
| Reading, photo storage, or other benefits | The cost of a specific service or purchase you would otherwise make, if you use the included benefit. | An advertised retail value for a feature you do not use or would not pay for. | Use zero when there is no plausible paid alternative. |
| Prime Day and other deals | A discount on an item you already intended to buy, compared with its realistic price elsewhere at the time. | The deal’s displayed discount as savings if it prompted an extra purchase. Subtract the purchase cost rather than treating the entire discount as value. | Keep receipts or compare the price with a realistic alternative; a promotion alone does not prove savings. |
| Pharmacy benefits | Your actual eligible medication price difference versus your insurance copay and other pharmacy options. | A headline savings percentage applied to all prescriptions or treated as guaranteed. | Eligibility, insurance, medication, and alternative prices affect the result; compare the actual options available to you. |
Do not count the same benefit twice. For example, if a streaming service is already included in another subscription you would keep, Prime Video may not replace an additional expense. Similarly, avoid adding a shipping-fee estimate for an order if you have already counted a different benefit value that represents the same avoided cost.

How do you value delivery if that is all you use?
If delivery is your only meaningful Prime benefit, add the shipping fees you would actually incur without Prime during the comparison period. Do not multiply the number of orders by a hypothetical fee unless you would truly have paid that fee: you might instead wait for a free-shipping threshold, choose slower delivery, or not place the order.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Let F be the annual Prime fee shown in your account and S the total shipping charges you realistically expect to avoid. Delivery alone covers the fee only when S is at least F. If you expect a mix of paid shipping and free alternatives, include only the paid charges you would otherwise choose. This gives a direct answer to “How much do I need to order for Prime to pay for itself?”: there is no universal order count; the relevant amount is the shipping cost you would actually avoid.

How should you count Pharmacy, RxPass, and One Medical?
Medication savings and RxPass
Amazon Pharmacy says Prime members save “up to 80%” on brand and generic medication, but its accompanying qualification says the averages use usage and Inside Rx data compared with cash prices: average savings were 70% for all generics and 37% for select brand medications. Amazon also says restrictions apply. These are Amazon-reported averages, not a guarantee of an individual saving. Compare the eligible medication’s actual price with your insurance copay and prices available from other pharmacies.
Amazon Pharmacy currently lists RxPass at $5 per month for eligible medications, irrespective of how many eligible prescriptions a member has. Eligibility restrictions apply. If you use RxPass, account for its charge as a separate add-on in the period you are calculating; compare its cost with what you would otherwise pay for the eligible prescriptions. Do not assume it is the best option without checking your own coverage and alternatives.

One Medical
Amazon states that One Medical membership is not included with Prime. Its current page lists a Prime-member price of $99 per year for the first member and $66 per year for each additional family member, up to five, subject to terms. Treat this as a separate expense, not as Prime value automatically received. Include it only if you use or would otherwise buy the service, and subtract the separate membership fee from a combined Prime-and-One-Medical calculation. Scheduled appointments may also have costs billed to you or your insurance.
How do household sharing and separate subscriptions affect the math?
Household use can make a membership more valuable, but do not assume every benefit can be shared or assign the full household value to each person. Amazon Family describes requirements for sharing specified benefits, including same-address and payment-sharing provisions. Check the current Amazon Family help page for the rules that apply to your household. Amazon says Prime Video Ad Free cannot be shared through Family; treat it as a separate subscription if you choose to pay for it.

For a household calculation, decide whether you are evaluating the total household budget or one person’s share. Add a shared benefit only once to a household total. If you are comparing each person’s contribution, allocate the fee and benefits consistently rather than crediting every member with the full value.
How should you compare renewing, canceling, and billing options?
For each option, use the current account terms and compare over the same expected duration. A monthly billing choice and an annual choice are not directly comparable until you know how long you expect to remain a member and the price your account actually offers. Do not assume one is cheaper without checking those terms.
| Decision | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Renew | Current fee, benefits you expect to use, realistic substitute costs, household allocation, and separate add-ons. |
| Cancel | Which benefits you would replace with paid services or shipping, which you would simply stop using, and whether any costs occur outside Prime. |
| Change billing or plan | Current price and eligibility for each option, expected membership duration, included benefits, and any effect on household sharing. |
Prices and benefit terms change. An Amazon Pay article dated September 30, 2022 listed U.S. Prime at $14.99 per month or $139 per year; those are historical figures, not verified 2026 prices. Use the amount shown in your account or renewal notice instead.
Example: a conservative annual estimate
Suppose a member is deciding about the next year. They would otherwise pay $36 in shipping charges, would actually buy a $60 streaming substitute that Prime Video replaces, and would not pay for a music service or photo storage. They estimate $20 of genuine savings on planned purchases, after comparing prices, and pay $15 for a separate add-on during the year. If the fee shown in their account is F, their estimate is $36 + $60 + $20 − F − $15. They should enter their actual account fee for F; the result depends on that price and on whether those alternatives are realistic. If the member would not actually buy the $60 substitute, that line should be zero, not $60.
