To estimate the electricity used by an OBS streaming setup, multiply its average power draw in watts by the hours streamed in a month, then divide by 1,000. That gives kilowatt-hours (kWh), also called electricity units. Multiply the result by the applicable energy rate on your local bill for a rough energy-charge estimate. There is no single reliable India-wide rupee total: your equipment, streaming hours, state or DISCOM tariff, consumption slab and other bill components all matter.
Calculate the setup’s monthly electricity use
Use the power draw of the equipment you intend to count—not an assumed “OBS wattage.” OBS is software; electricity use depends on the computer and any peripherals running during the stream. One electricity unit is 1 kWh. The Kerala State Council of Educational Research and Training’s 2021 physics text gives the conversion as watts × hours ÷ 1,000.
Monthly energy (kWh) = average power (W) × streaming hours per day × streaming days per month ÷ 1,000

If a setup averaged 200 W and streamed 5 hours a day for 30 days, it would use 30 kWh: 200 × 5 × 30 ÷ 1,000. This is an arithmetic example, not a claim that 200 W is typical for an OBS computer.

- Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
- Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
Measure the actual streaming load
A measured average over representative sessions is more useful than guessing from a computer’s power-supply rating or a device’s nameplate. A plug-in electricity usage monitor that displays both instantaneous watts and accumulated kWh can help. Yantram describes those readings on its PM10 product page; check that any meter you choose is rated for your voltage, current and plug configuration in India.
- Decide what the estimate covers: the PC alone, or the complete desk setup.
- Connect the included equipment to a suitably rated meter, following the meter’s instructions. Measure several representative streaming sessions rather than relying on a brief idle reading.
- Record the accumulated kWh before and after the sessions. Divide the kWh used by the hours measured, then multiply that average power in kW by your monthly streaming hours. Alternatively, use the meter’s average watts in the formula above.
- Include monitors, speakers, capture devices, lights or other equipment only if you want their consumption included. Measure multiple devices together only when the meter and electrical arrangement safely support it.
A U.S. utility cooperative’s guide describes cumulative kWh measurement but says the Kill-A-Watt model it references cannot be used with 220 V appliances. That limitation applies to that referenced device; do not assume a U.S. meter is suitable for Indian mains.

- Multi-function power monitor: Our electric usage monitor can monitor the power (W), electricity(kWh), voltage(V), frequency(Hz), current(A), power factor(PF), unit price($/kWh), total cost($) of your appliances. By switching 8 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The “electricity” mode can calculate and display how much power your appliance uses. And the “total cost” mode will show how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Overload protection: When the loading power of the appliance is over the default overload threshold 1800W, the whole display with backlight and the word “OVERLOAD” will keep flashing to warn the users. Please turn off the appliance for safety concern
- Premium Material: The whole body of our energy meter is made of high-quality ABS material. It makes our home electricity usage monitor more long lasting, fireproof and anti-drop. The standard US socket and plug is suitable for all US standard appliances
- Backlight Display: With white backlight and black words, the LCD display of our home power monitor can display the data clearer and help you to read the data easier no matter day or night. The backlight will only lights up when the device is connected to AC power. If no button is pressed, the backlight turns off automatically after 10 minutes. You can also press the "UP" button to turn off the backlight manually, and press any button to turn on backlight again
- Easy to reset: No reset tool needed, our appliance power usage meter is easy to reset. You can press the “M” button for 5 seconds directly to reset the device. After reset, all cumulative data (electricity quantity, cost) will be cleared, and all settings will be restored to factory settings
Turn kWh into an estimate of the added bill
For a rough estimate of the added energy charge, multiply the monthly kWh by the marginal energy rate that applies to your household’s current consumption. For a closer estimate, apply your DISCOM’s tariff and billing rules, including consumption slabs and any relevant fixed charges, duties, subsidies or adjustments. The stream’s kWh do not necessarily translate directly into the same amount of extra total bill: the result depends on your household’s existing usage and tariff structure.

Illustration: Lakshadweep’s FY 2026–27 schedule
Lakshadweep’s FY 2026–27 domestic schedule lists slab-based energy charges and a separate fixed charge. Its energy-charge figures are:
| Consumption slab | Energy charge listed |
|---|---|
| 0–100 units | ₹3.55/kWh |
| 101–200 units | ₹5.30/kWh |
| 201–300 units | ₹7.70/kWh |
| 301–400 units | ₹10.05/kWh |
| Above 400 units | ₹13.05/kWh |
These are territory-specific scheduled rates, not an India-wide price. Because the schedule is slab-based, do not automatically multiply all stream kWh by one of these figures without checking how the tariff applies to your household’s total consumption. The schedule also lists a fixed charge; consult it and your bill for the amount and applicable rules.

Keep the estimate’s scope clear
- PC-only estimate: count the computer’s measured load and exclude other equipment.
- Complete streaming desk: include the monitor and any other devices you want counted, preferably by measuring them together with a suitably rated meter.
- Change to the full household bill: account for existing household consumption, the applicable slab method and other bill components, not just the stream’s energy charge.
Your monthly figure will be more useful if you state the measured or estimated average watts, streaming schedule, included equipment and tariff basis alongside it.
