To estimate the extra electricity used by a PC while streaming YouTube, multiply its average power draw in watts by the hours it streams, then divide by 1,000. That gives kilowatt-hours (kWh), which are electricity units. Estimate the added energy charge by multiplying those units by the applicable marginal rate on your local tariff; there is no single India-wide rupee-per-unit price or standard wattage for a streaming PC.
Calculate the PC’s extra electricity units
Use the PC’s average power draw while it is streaming—not the power supply’s maximum rating. The Department of Electricity, Government of Puducherry, explains that one unit (kWh) is 1,000 watts of electrical energy used for one hour. Its consumer guide recommends estimating appliance use from wattage and actual operating time.
- Find average draw. A wall power meter can measure the PC during a representative streaming session. If you do not have a measurement, use a clearly labeled estimate; official guidance does not establish one typical wattage for a YouTube streaming PC. Include the monitor, speakers or networking equipment only if you want their consumption included. Do not count a device twice if it is already included in a whole-setup measurement.
- Convert watts and time to units. Multiply average watts by streaming hours and divide by 1,000. For a billing period, use the actual number of streaming days.
- Estimate the energy charge. Multiply the added units by the marginal energy rate that applies to your connection and consumption slab. Then check other bill components separately.
Formulas
- Units for a session = average watts × hours ÷ 1,000.
- Monthly units = average watts × hours per day × days in the billing period ÷ 1,000.
- Approximate added energy charge = added units × applicable marginal energy rate (₹/kWh).
Illustrative calculation
If a particular PC averages 200 W at the wall and streams for 8 hours each day over 30 days, its estimated use is 200 × 8 × 30 ÷ 1,000 = 48 kWh, or 48 units. The energy-charge estimate is 48 multiplied by the household’s applicable marginal ₹/kWh rate. These are illustrative assumptions, not a measured PC result, a standard consumption figure or an India-wide tariff.
Turn units into an India-specific bill estimate
Use the tariff for your electricity connection, not a national average. The Ministry of Power says retail tariffs are determined by the appropriate electricity regulatory commissions, and state governments may subsidize some consumer classes. Your location, utility, domestic category, consumption slab and subsidy can all affect the amount charged for additional use. The Central Electricity Authority’s March 2026 tariff compilation is a national reference, but your latest local tariff order and bill are the better guide for your connection.

- Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
- Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
Apply the rate for the units your extra PC use adds at the margin. If those units cross a slab threshold, the whole household bill may not change at one simple flat rate. Fixed charges, electricity duty or tax, meter charges and subsidy can also affect the total; multiplying units by a rate estimates the energy-charge increment, not the complete bill. For example, WBSEDCL’s official appliance estimator says its approximate cost excludes fixed charges and meter rent. If you live elsewhere, check whether your own DISCOM offers a similar calculator.
Check time-of-day rules on your bill
Time-of-day tariffs may change the applicable rate for eligible connections. A June 2023 Ministry of Power release described solar-hour tariffs as 10–20% below normal tariffs and peak-hour tariffs as 10–20% above them, with timings set by state commissions; it also described applicability after smart-meter installation. Those figures describe the framework in that release, not a guaranteed current rate or schedule for every household. Check your bill or DISCOM tariff schedule for whether time-of-day billing applies and the current hours and rates.

- Multi-function power monitor: Our electric usage monitor can monitor the power (W), electricity(kWh), voltage(V), frequency(Hz), current(A), power factor(PF), unit price($/kWh), total cost($) of your appliances. By switching 8 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The “electricity” mode can calculate and display how much power your appliance uses. And the “total cost” mode will show how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Overload protection: When the loading power of the appliance is over the default overload threshold 1800W, the whole display with backlight and the word “OVERLOAD” will keep flashing to warn the users. Please turn off the appliance for safety concern
- Premium Material: The whole body of our energy meter is made of high-quality ABS material. It makes our home electricity usage monitor more long lasting, fireproof and anti-drop. The standard US socket and plug is suitable for all US standard appliances
- Backlight Display: With white backlight and black words, the LCD display of our home power monitor can display the data clearer and help you to read the data easier no matter day or night. The backlight will only lights up when the device is connected to AC power. If no button is pressed, the backlight turns off automatically after 10 minutes. You can also press the "UP" button to turn off the backlight manually, and press any button to turn on backlight again
- Easy to reset: No reset tool needed, our appliance power usage meter is easy to reset. You can press the “M” button for 5 seconds directly to reset the device. After reset, all cumulative data (electricity quantity, cost) will be cleared, and all settings will be restored to factory settings
Check the estimate against your meter and bill
Compare the estimate with the difference between successive meter readings and the units billed. A household meter records every connected load, not just the streaming PC, so the change will not isolate streaming use. Bill amounts can also shift because of tariff or fixed-cost changes even when usage is similar. The Puducherry consumer guide recommends comparing units across billing periods.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a useful comparison between setups or schedules, keep the billing context constant and compare average wall draw, streaming hours, which peripherals are included, and the marginal slab or time-of-day window. A wattage-and-hours estimate can be checked against a direct energy-meter reading over a representative session. A PC’s PSU rating is not a substitute for observed consumption.
