To estimate a Bitcoin payment in U.S. dollars, multiply the BTC amount by the BTC/USD rate shown for that payment. Then check the wallet’s final review screen: the payment value is not necessarily the same as your total debit, which may also include a Bitcoin network fee and provider charges.

Calculate the conversion

Use the rate quoted by the merchant or wallet for the payment, and note its quote currency and timestamp. The Bitcoin Developer Guide explains that fiat-priced orders are converted into satoshis and that the exchange-rate input should reflect current market value: Bitcoin Developer Guide: Payment Processing.

  • For an amount already in BTC: BTC amount × BTC/USD rate = approximate dollar value.
  • For a dollar-denominated invoice: invoice amount ÷ BTC/USD rate = approximate BTC amount due.

For example, at a hypothetical quote of 1 BTC = $60,000, a payment of 0.002 BTC is approximately $120 before fees. This is an illustration, not a current Bitcoin price.

Check which amount the invoice specifies

Confirm whether the merchant asks for a fixed BTC amount or an amount pegged to dollars. A BTC amount represents the specified quantity of Bitcoin; its estimated dollar value can change with the market. With a fiat-priced invoice, the BTC amount is calculated using an exchange rate and may change if the quote expires and the invoice is refreshed.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Use the rate and BTC amount supplied for that specific invoice rather than combining a rate from one source with an invoice calculated from another. The Bitcoin Developer Guide says exchange-rate data may come from exchange APIs or aggregated index-price APIs, and advises automated pricing systems to compare independent sources. For consumers, the practical check is to read the merchant’s or wallet’s quote and its timestamp.

Separate payment value from fees and total debit

The conversion estimates the value of the Bitcoin going to the recipient. It does not tell you the full amount that will leave your wallet. Review these items separately before approving:

  • Payment value: the requested BTC amount converted at the selected BTC/USD rate.
  • Network fee: a fee for including the transaction in a block. Bitcoin.org explains that the fee depends on transaction size and demand for block space, not simply on the amount being sent: Bitcoin.org: Transaction fees.
  • Provider charges or rate spread: a wallet, exchange, or payment service may apply its own charges or use a rate that differs from another source. Check that provider’s terms and confirmation screen; there is no universal fee amount.
  • Total debit: the final amount depends on whether your wallet adds the network fee to the payment or deducts it from the amount you entered, as well as any provider charge.

Bitcoin.org notes that transaction size can depend on the number of inputs and outputs, so the fee cannot be reliably inferred from the payment’s dollar value. Wallet fee estimates are predictions, and fees can change as demand shifts. The wallet’s final review screen is the place to inspect the current estimate and total.

Check the invoice expiry and payment method

Fiat-linked Bitcoin quotes are time-sensitive: the BTC/USD rate can move while you are preparing a payment. The Bitcoin Developer Guide says payment processors commonly expire invoices after 10–20 minutes; that is reported practice, not a universal expiry period. Follow the expiry shown on your own invoice. If it has expired, request or generate a fresh invoice instead of relying on the old conversion.

Also confirm that the invoice’s payment method matches what your wallet will send. Bitcoin.org describes Lightning as near-instant, with minimal fees for small payments when both the recipient and wallet support it: Bitcoin.org: Lightning Network. Those are general characteristics, not a fee or speed guarantee for a particular payment. If the invoice specifies a network or your wallet offers more than one option, use a compatible path and inspect its displayed fee.

Pre-send checklist

  1. Identify whether the amount shown is BTC or USD.
  2. Read the merchant’s or wallet’s BTC/USD quote and timestamp; use the quote for that invoice.
  3. Calculate the approximate value by multiplying BTC by the quoted rate, or estimate BTC due by dividing the dollar invoice by the rate.
  4. Check the requested payment method and invoice expiry. Refresh an expired invoice.
  5. On the wallet’s final review screen, verify the recipient, payment amount, network fee, any provider charge, and total debit before confirming.

For reference, Bitcoin.org states that 1 BTC equals 100,000,000 satoshis. Bitcoin Core’s send reference defines a transaction output amount in BTC: Bitcoin Core: sendtoaddress.
