To calculate storage for a 24/7 YouTube video playlist, add the sizes of every distinct video file you plan to use. If you are estimating before the files exist, multiply the combined video and audio bitrate by the total duration of unique content, then divide by eight to convert bits to bytes. Replaying the same playlist does not require another copy of its files.
Use existing file sizes when you have them
For an existing playlist, add the actual sizes of its unique files. This is more reliable than estimating from nominal bitrates, especially for variable-bitrate video. Count each file once, even if it will play repeatedly.
If the same video appears more than once in your playlist, count it once only if the service stores one copy of that file. If you have separately exported copies, include each copy’s actual size.
Estimate storage from bitrate and duration
When files have not yet been encoded, use this formula:

Estimated bytes = (video bitrate in bits/second + audio bitrate in bits/second) × duration in seconds ÷ 8
For multiple distinct videos, use their combined duration. If you work in megabits per second and hours, a convenient decimal-unit shortcut is:
Approximate decimal GB = combined Mbps × hours × 0.45

The shortcut assumes a constant combined bitrate. Add audio bitrate to video bitrate when they are given separately. If the file uses variable bitrate, its actual size depends on the content and encoding; the calculation is an estimate, not a guaranteed file size.
Worked example: estimate a day of unique content
YouTube’s official upload encoding guidance recommends 8 Mbps video for 1080p SDR at 24, 25, or 30 fps and 384 kbps for stereo audio. Together, those rates are 8.384 Mbps. At a constant combined rate, 24 hours of unique content would require about 90.55 decimal GB (8.384 × 24 × 0.45). This is an arithmetic estimate from YouTube’s upload recommendations, not a measurement of an actual encode or a promised file size.
These estimates use decimal GB, where 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes:

| Combined bitrate | Approximate size for 24 hours of unique content |
|---|---|
| 5 Mbps | 54 GB |
| 8 Mbps | 86.4 GB |
| 8.384 Mbps (8 Mbps video + 384 kbps audio) | 90.55 GB |
| 12 Mbps | 129.6 GB |
| 16 Mbps | 172.8 GB |
These are calculations from the stated rates and 24-hour duration, not separately measured file sizes or a YouTube storage table. Drive manufacturers commonly use decimal capacity; operating systems may display capacity in decimal GB or binary GiB. One sustained Mbps for one hour is about 0.45 decimal GB or 0.419 GiB, so check which unit your device or service displays.
Choose bitrate inputs that match the video
YouTube’s current upload guidance gives the following SDR video recommendations. These are planning inputs, not universal requirements for every source file or a statement of how much data a platform stores after processing.
Recommended Free Tools
| Resolution and frame rate | Recommended SDR video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p, 24/25/30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p, 48/50/60 fps | 7.5 Mbps |
| 1080p, 24/25/30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p, 48/50/60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 24/25/30 fps | 35–45 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 48/50/60 fps | 53–68 Mbps |
HDR recommendations differ and are generally higher; for example, YouTube lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 24/25/30 fps and 15 Mbps at 48/50/60 fps. Its audio recommendations include 128 kbps mono, 384 kbps stereo, and 512 kbps 5.1. Add the applicable audio rate when calculating from separate audio and video rates.

Compare like with like: resolution, frame rate, SDR or HDR, audio channel configuration, and whether the bitrate is the actual encode’s average or only a planning target. YouTube supports variable bitrate and does not require a bitrate limit. A calm, static scene and a visually complex scene can therefore produce different file sizes even with the same nominal settings. YouTube also says, “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.”
Refine the estimate before encoding a large library
- List the unique files. If they already exist, total their displayed file sizes rather than estimating from bitrate.
- For files not yet encoded, choose matching inputs. Select a plausible video bitrate for the resolution, frame rate, and SDR/HDR format, then include the audio rate.
- Encode a representative sample. Check its actual size and calculate its average size per minute. Use that observed rate to refine the estimate for similar material.
- Allow for additions and working copies. Keep extra space for future playlist files and any separate backup or editing copies; the amount depends on your workflow.
- Check the destination’s capacity. Compare your total with the available local disk or hosted-service allowance, and verify current limits and terms before purchasing.
If you retain local source files or backups, choose an external hard drive for video files only after measuring your library and accounting for planned additions.
Why looping does not multiply storage
A playlist that loops the same files stores one copy of each distinct file, not a new copy for every repeat. A library of four unique one-hour videos needs storage for those four files whether they play once or continuously. If you separately record the continuous 24-hour output, that recording is an additional file and needs its own storage estimate based on its duration and bitrate.

Account for cloud-service storage separately
Your library’s calculated size and a hosted service’s upload allowance are separate constraints. StreamNeo’s official site describes uploading recordings or building a playlist for cloud playback to YouTube, and lists 10 GB of storage per slot. Compare your actual library total with that allowance and check the service’s current terms; the allowance does not change the storage calculation for your files.
StreamNeo’s feature and capacity details are vendor-authored, not independently tested here. If you need more capacity than a service includes, check its current terms before relying on it for the whole library.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube playlist you want to run continuously, StreamNeo works like this: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Its cloud service loops uploaded videos, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo says each slot includes 10 GB of pooled storage per active slot, 24/7 looping and playlists, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot.
- Nothing has to stay powered on at home.
- Any quality up to 4K 60fps is included at one flat price per slot.
- Automatic recovery is intended to resume the stream if YouTube drops it.
- The first day is free with no card, once per account.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo lists daily, weekly, monthly, six-month, and yearly billing, with the same product on each plan; UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. See current pricing and verify the storage allowance against your playlist before choosing a plan. Start your free StreamNeo day.
