Estimate storage by multiplying your recordings’ combined video-and-audio bitrate by the total recording time, then dividing by 8. At YouTube’s recommended H.264 settings for 1080p30—10 Mbps video plus 128 kbps stereo audio—a continuous 30-day recording works out to about 3.28 TB decimal (about 2.98 TiB). That is a calculation from those settings, not a universal 1080p file-size rule; actual bitrate and recorded hours determine the space you need.
Calculate storage from bitrate and recording time
Use the recording’s combined bitrate and the number of seconds you will retain. If video and audio bitrates are listed separately, add them first.
Storage in bytes = total bitrate in bits per second × recording duration in seconds ÷ 8
Divide the result by 1,000,000,000 for decimal gigabytes (GB) or 1,000,000,000,000 for decimal terabytes (TB). For binary units, divide by 1,073,741,824 for GiB or 1,099,511,627,776 for TiB. A TB and a TiB are not the same size.

Use the recording’s actual bitrate
Resolution alone does not give an exact file size. The bitrate, recording duration, audio settings, and whether the bitrate varies all affect storage. Use the average or configured combined bitrate for the local recording—not the number of resolutions viewers can select on YouTube.
Worked example: 30 continuous days at 1080p30
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists 10 Mbps as the recommended H.264 video bitrate for 1080p30 and 128 kbps for stereo audio. Together, these are 10.128 Mbps, or 10,128,000 bits per second. The figures are YouTube’s recommended settings; the capacity below is arithmetic based on those settings and uninterrupted recording.
- Convert 30 days to seconds: 30 × 24 × 60 × 60 = 2,592,000 seconds.
- Multiply by the combined bitrate and divide by 8: 2,592,000 × 10,128,000 ÷ 8 = 3,281,472,000,000 bytes.
- Convert units: approximately 3.28 TB decimal, or 2.98 TiB binary.
At the same combined bitrate, one hour is approximately 4.56 GB decimal. Treat that as an estimate for this bitrate, not a universal size for every 1080p recording.

If you record eight hours a day
Eight hours per day is one-third of continuous recording. At the example bitrate, 30 days of eight-hour recordings need about 1.09 TB decimal before you add headroom.
Example at 720p60
YouTube’s guidance lists 6 Mbps H.264 video for 720p60, with 128 kbps stereo audio. The combined bitrate is 6.128 Mbps. Over 30 uninterrupted days, the calculation gives approximately 1.99 TB decimal. This is likewise an estimate derived from the specified settings and duration.
Plan for your own recording schedule and files
- Set the retention period. Thirty uninterrupted days equals 2,592,000 seconds. If your streams run for fewer hours, use the actual total recorded hours instead.
- Find the local recording bitrate. Use the configured or average bitrate of the saved file. Include audio if its bitrate is separate. For variable-bitrate recordings, plan around the highest plausible sustained average if you need to avoid running out of space.
- Calculate the bytes and convert units. Apply the formula, then label the result TB/GB decimal or TiB/GiB binary so your estimate matches the unit convention.
- Add a buffer that suits your workflow. Reserve room for filesystem overhead and variation in file sizes. The amount is a planning choice, not a YouTube requirement. Account separately for duplicate local copies, separate audio tracks, or saved copies at other qualities.
- Check usable drive capacity. Compare the calculated need with the drive’s usable capacity after formatting, rather than relying only on its advertised capacity. If you need a separate backup, size that copy independently.
For a single local library, a high-capacity external hard drive is a straightforward category to consider. Compare usable capacity, price per usable terabyte, connection type and sustained transfer needs, warranty, and portability. A second drive is relevant if you want a separate copy. A NAS may suit a larger, shared, or expandable archive, but it is not necessary just to calculate storage.

YouTube archives and local copies are separate
YouTube transcodes a live stream into viewer formats; you do not multiply local source-file storage by the number of playback renditions. Those versions are not additional local recordings unless you separately save them.

YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that a longer stream may not be captured. Its guidance is: “We recommend recording a local archive as a backup.” The 12-hour caveat concerns whether YouTube captures an automatic archive; it is not a file-size limit. A dependable local archive should be sized and retained independently of YouTube’s processing.
The YouTube Live Streaming API says a completed broadcast is converted into a video and that availability after broadcast can be delayed in relation to broadcast length. That processing does not replace keeping a local file when you need your own archive.

Troubleshoot a storage estimate that does not match
- The drive fills sooner than expected: check whether your actual average bitrate exceeds the estimate, recording hours are longer, or you have additional tracks or copies. Recalculate using the actual total duration and combined bitrate.
- The file is smaller than expected: pauses, shorter sessions, or a variable bitrate below the configured maximum can reduce the total. Use the recorded hours and average bitrate rather than assuming a full 30 days of continuous data.
- Your drive reports less capacity than the calculation: check whether you compared decimal TB with binary TiB, and use the drive’s usable capacity after formatting.
- YouTube has no automatic archive: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive. Keep a local recording if you need a reliable copy.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded recordings looping as a YouTube live stream rather than maintain the stream from a computer at home, StreamNeo runs that playback in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays your uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
StreamNeo has one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo plans or start your free first day.
