To calculate federal taxes on Lyft driving, reconcile your Lyft earnings with your own records, subtract eligible business expenses, and include the resulting profit in your individual tax return. If you use your car for business and personal driving, deduct only the business-use portion under a vehicle method you are eligible to use. Estimated payments depend on your expected total tax and withholding—not simply on your Lyft deposits.
Do you owe tax on Lyft income if you do not get a 1099?
Generally, yes. The Internal Revenue Service says “gig economy income is taxable, even if it’s part-time, temporary, or paid in cash.” A missing information return does not make taxable income exempt from reporting. The IRS says many self-employed gig workers may have a federal filing obligation when net self-employment income is $400 or more, although filing obligations depend on your circumstances.
Lyft says US drivers can find available tax documents in the Tax Center in the Driver Dashboard. Depending on earnings and activity, Lyft may provide Form 1099-K and/or Form 1099-NEC. Its Annual Summary is a useful yearly record of earnings and related expenses, including rides and online miles, but Lyft says it is not an official tax document. Reconcile it against your own records rather than treating it as a completed tax calculation.

It describes a $600 threshold for specified non-driving earnings for a 1099-NEC. Those are Lyft’s statements about 2025 earnings, not universal rules for 2026 or a guarantee that a driver below a threshold has no taxable income.

How to calculate taxable Lyft profit
For many self-employed drivers, the federal return involves Form 1040, Schedule C, and Schedule SE, subject to the person’s filing circumstances. The basic workflow is to establish business receipts, subtract eligible expenses, and then account for the resulting profit within your full tax return. This does not by itself determine your final income-tax or self-employment-tax bill.
- Gather and reconcile records. Compare Lyft statements and available tax forms with bank deposits, trip records, and receipts. Information returns and deposits are not necessarily a complete measure of business receipts.
- Identify the earnings categories. Use the actual Lyft statement to distinguish passenger payments, tips, incentives, reimbursements, and other categories. Lyft notes that passenger-payment totals may include tips, toll reimbursements, cancellation fees, platform and third-party fees, and taxes; the figure can be higher than the amount deposited in your bank account.
- Account for fees without double counting. Lyft’s Annual Summary may list platform or service fees, third-party fees and taxes, Express Pay fees, Express Drive rental fees, and tolls. Determine how each amount is represented in your receipts and expenses before entering it; do not deduct a fee again if your accounting already treated it as netted from a receipt.
- Subtract eligible business expenses. Apply a vehicle method supported by your records, and account for other expenses only when they meet applicable rules and have a business purpose. A category appearing in a platform summary does not automatically make the full amount deductible.
- Use the resulting profit in your full return. Your total income tax and self-employment tax depend on more than Lyft activity, including other wages or income, filing status, household circumstances, credits, and deductions.
How many Lyft miles can you deduct?
There is no automatic deduction for every mile shown in a Lyft account. For a car used for both business and personal purposes, the deduction is generally limited to eligible business use, supported by records. Lyft’s reported “online miles” can help you reconcile activity, but they do not establish that every such mile qualifies. The applicable treatment of waiting, repositioning, commuting, or travel between other work locations depends on the circumstances; keep records that show what a trip was for rather than relying on a total alone.
Keep a contemporaneous trip record and supporting expense receipts. A mileage app or a paper logbook can help if it captures trips consistently, can be exported and backed up, and is easy to reconcile with Lyft and personal records. The tool itself does not make a trip business use or an expense deductible.

Standard mileage rate or actual vehicle expenses?
The IRS recognizes two broad vehicle methods. Compare them only after checking your eligibility, vehicle ownership or lease status, prior method choices, and records. If your car has mixed business and personal use, allocate costs to business use rather than claiming personal costs as business expenses.
| Method | How the vehicle amount is calculated | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Standard mileage | Multiply eligible business miles by the applicable tax-year rate. The rate covers car costs without separately totaling those costs. | Business miles, records, eligibility, and prior elections. Parking and tolls may be separately deductible when allowed. |
| Actual expenses | Allocate eligible vehicle costs to business use. Costs can include fuel, repairs, insurance, registration, and depreciation or lease costs. | Business-use percentage, the vehicle’s costs, ownership or lease status, depreciation choices, and records. Costs must be eligible and allocated correctly. |
Federal standard mileage rates for 2025 and 2026
The IRS rate for tax year 2025 is 70 cents per business mile. For 2026, the IRS rates differ by date: 72.5 cents per business mile from January 1 through June 30, and 76 cents per business mile from July 1 through December 31. The 2026 mileage-rate component is calculated as:
(eligible business miles Jan. 1–June 30 × $0.725) + (eligible business miles July 1–Dec. 31 × $0.76)

Use the rate for the period when the miles were driven; do not apply one 2026 rate to the full year. These calculations use eligible business miles, not all miles driven or all miles reported as online.
Check the rules before choosing a method
For an owned car, IRS guidance generally requires choosing the standard mileage method in the first year the vehicle is available for business use to preserve the ability to use it in later years. An actual-cost election or depreciation choice can restrict later options. For a leased car, choosing standard mileage generally commits you to that method for the entire lease period, including renewals. Check current IRS instructions for your situation before making the choice.
When both methods are available, compare total eligible business miles and business-use percentage against actual fuel, repair, insurance, registration, interest, depreciation or lease costs, and any separately deductible parking or tolls. The largest headline rate or biggest vehicle bill does not necessarily identify the correct method.

When do Lyft drivers need to make estimated tax payments?
The IRS’s general estimated-tax test has two parts. An individual generally must make estimated payments if they expect to owe at least $1,000 after withholding and refundable credits, and expect withholding and credits to be less than the smaller of 90% of current-year tax or 100% of prior-year tax. The prior-year percentage is 110% for specified higher-income taxpayers: those whose prior-year adjusted gross income was over $150,000, or $75,000 for married filing separately. Exceptions and special rules can apply.
These thresholds are based on expected tax and payments, not a fixed share of gross Lyft payouts. Net profit, other income, filing status, deductions, credits, withholding, and prior-year safe-harbor facts all affect the calculation. Use the current IRS Form 1040-ES and instructions to estimate an amount for your circumstances, or consult a qualified tax professional. A personal savings percentage can be a budgeting aid, but it is not a substitute for calculating estimated tax.

Federal installment dates
The regular federal estimated-tax dates are April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15 of the following year. These are not equal calendar quarters. If a due date falls on a weekend or legal holiday, the IRS moves it. A driver with a wage-paying job may be able to increase paycheck withholding instead of making separate estimated payments.

What the Lyft summary can—and cannot—tell you
The Driver Dashboard’s Annual Summary can help organize earnings and expense categories, and Lyft tax documents can help with reconciliation. Neither determines whether a particular vehicle mile or expense qualifies, replaces your own records, or calculates your total tax obligation. Keep the underlying trip and cost records so you can explain how you arrived at business miles, allocations, receipts, and deductions.
This article covers US federal treatment, not state or local rules state by state. Tax-year rules and information-return thresholds can vary by jurisdiction and change over time; identify your tax year and jurisdiction before relying on a specific filing or reporting figure.
