Multiply the stream’s total outgoing bitrate in megabits per second (Mbps) by the streaming hours and by 0.45 to estimate decimal gigabytes (GB): GB ≈ Mbps × hours × 0.45. At a steady 1 Mbps, that is about 0.45 GB per hour, 10.8 GB per day, or 75.6 GB per week. Use the combined audio-and-video bitrate if your radio stream sends both.
How the data-usage calculation works
The estimate converts a sustained bitrate into data transferred over time. One Mbps for an hour is about 450 megabytes (MB), or 0.45 decimal GB.
Approximate decimal GB = total outgoing bitrate (Mbps) × streaming hours × 0.45

Which bitrate should you use?
Count the entire outgoing stream
Use the bitrate your encoder actually sends to YouTube. If the encoder reports one combined stream bitrate, use that figure. If it reports audio and video separately, add those rates first. A still image or visualizer does not necessarily make a stream audio-only: if video is being transmitted, include its bitrate as well.
Do not confuse the station’s upload with viewer data
This calculation estimates the station’s outgoing contribution to YouTube, not the playback data consumed by all listeners. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats so viewers can watch across devices and network conditions. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and stream guidance and Google’s live HLS ingestion documentation.

Worked examples
| Outgoing bitrate | Duration | Estimated station upload |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Mbps | 1 hour | 0.45 GB |
| 1 Mbps | 24 hours | 10.8 GB |
| 1 Mbps | 7 days, continuously | 75.6 GB |
| 1.5 Mbps | 30 days, continuously | 486 GB |
For the 30-day example: 1.5 × 24 × 30 × 0.45 ≈ 486 decimal GB. If 1.5 Mbps is audio-only, the estimate covers that audio stream; add video bitrate before calculating if video is also sent.

Using YouTube’s audio recommendation as an example
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends 128 kbps for stereo audio. At that audio bitrate alone, the estimate is about 57.6 MB per hour, or 1.38 GB per day, before overhead. That is only the audio track, not a universal total for an internet radio stream. Include any outgoing video bitrate too. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and stream quality before going live, using constant bitrate encoding, and monitoring stream health. Its guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS streaming and AAC or MP3 audio among recommended advanced settings, and recommends RTMPS for encryption to Google’s servers. See YouTube Help.

Check the units on your data cap
The examples use decimal GB: 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. To express usage in binary GiB, divide the byte total by 1,073,741,824 instead. Data-cap displays may use decimal GB, but check your internet provider’s definition before comparing your estimate with its allowance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan for variable bitrate and overhead
For a basic estimate, use the encoder’s configured total outgoing bitrate. If bitrate varies, a measured average from network monitoring over a representative period can give a closer estimate. For cap planning, allow room above the calculated figure for protocol overhead, reconnects, or bitrate variation rather than treating the result as an exact billable total.
