To calculate bandwidth for a 24/7 YouTube music stream, first estimate its sustained upload requirement: add the video bitrate recommended for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate to the audio bitrate, then allow headroom for network overhead and other traffic. Separately, estimate monthly data use by multiplying the total bitrate in Mbps by 324 GB for each uninterrupted 30-day month. For example, a 1080p30 H.264 stream at YouTube’s recommended 14 Mbps video rate plus 128 Kbps stereo audio sends about 4.58 TB in 30 days before overhead.

Upload speed and monthly data are different calculations

Upload capacity is the upstream throughput needed while your encoder sends the feed to YouTube. It is measured in Mbps. Use the total output bitrate as a baseline, then leave headroom for protocol overhead, bitrate variation, and other devices or workloads using the connection. An ISP’s advertised speed is not proof that the same upload rate will be continuously available at your address.

Data consumption is the quantity transmitted over time, usually measured in GB or TB. It depends on the configured bitrate and how long the stream runs. YouTube transcodes the submitted live feed into different formats for viewers, so you do not add viewers’ playback traffic to your encoder’s upload calculation. YouTube’s live encoder settings and guidance explain the platform-side stream setup.

Choose the encoder bitrate for your actual format

YouTube’s recommended video bitrate depends on the ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate. The following are recommended video rates, not measurements of Indian broadband speed and not guarantees of visual quality. For a stream using static artwork or a simple visual, choose the format deliberately; music audio does not make the video portion use zero bandwidth.

Input video setting AV1/H.265 video bitrate H.264 video bitrate
720p30 or 720p60 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 12 Mbps 17 Mbps

1440p60 24 Mbps 34 Mbps
2160p30 30 Mbps 42 Mbps
2160p60 35 Mbps 50 Mbps

YouTube’s advanced settings recommend 128 Kbps stereo audio or 384 Kbps 5.1 audio; the listed sample rates are 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1. Add the audio bitrate to the video rate to estimate total output. YouTube also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, keyframes every two seconds (no more than four seconds apart), and RTMPS. See YouTube’s settings guidance for the full recommendations, including minimum bitrate settings.

Codec trade-off

YouTube documentation notes that HEVC can deliver 25%–50% more compression than H.264 at the same video quality. That range is not a guaranteed bitrate reduction for a particular encoder or music visual; results depend on content and implementation. Use the recommendation for the codec you actually configure, rather than assuming the savings.

Calculate total upload and 30-day data use

  1. Set video format and bitrate. Choose codec, resolution, and frame rate, then take the corresponding recommended video bitrate from the table.
  2. Add audio. Convert audio Kbps to Mbps (128 Kbps is 0.128 Mbps; 384 Kbps is 0.384 Mbps) and add it to the video rate.
  3. Plan upload headroom. Treat the sum as a baseline, not a guaranteed sufficient ISP plan speed. Allow for overhead, other network use, and fluctuations, then verify performance under sustained conditions.
  4. Estimate monthly data. Multiply total Mbps by 324 GB for each continuous 30-day month. This conversion follows from 30 days of elapsed time and decimal GB; it is arithmetic, not a YouTube or ISP usage statistic.

The monthly formula is: total Mbps × 324 = approximate decimal GB per 30 days. Thus, every continuous 1 Mbps uses about 324 GB in 30 days. Actual usage may differ because of overhead, interruptions and reconnects, bitrate behavior, or duplicate feeds.

Example configuration Approximate total bitrate Estimated data in 30 uninterrupted days
720p30 AV1/H.265 recommended 6 Mbps video + 128 Kbps stereo audio 6.128 Mbps 1,985.472 GB (about 1.99 TB decimal), before overhead
1080p30 H.264 recommended 14 Mbps video + 128 Kbps stereo audio 14.128 Mbps 4,577.472 GB (about 4.58 TB decimal), before overhead
Generic 5 Mbps continuous stream 5 Mbps About 1.62 TB decimal
Generic 10 Mbps continuous stream 10 Mbps About 3.24 TB decimal
Generic 15 Mbps continuous stream 15 Mbps About 4.86 TB decimal

These examples multiply the stated total bitrate by 324 and assume 30 uninterrupted days; they omit network encapsulation overhead. If an ISP reports binary units, 3,240 decimal GB is approximately 3,017 GiB. Check whether your provider meters uploads and which units it uses. If you send a redundant second copy, account for that additional outbound traffic; YouTube’s API documentation describes optional simultaneous primary and backup ingestion: YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.

Test the connection for a continuous broadcast

A speed test is a snapshot, not evidence of reliable round-the-clock service. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate, using audio and movement similar to the real stream, and monitoring stream health. Its guidance says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate,” and “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”

  1. Configure your encoder with the intended codec, resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, and audio settings.
  2. Run a speed test and check the upload result, not only download. Compare available sustained upload with the stream’s total output plus reasonable headroom.
  3. Test using representative audio and video. Even static artwork should be tested in the intended configuration.
  4. Observe the encoder and YouTube stream health over time. Check for warnings such as low video bitrate, audio problems, or missing audio/video; YouTube’s API describes stream health and configuration issues.
  5. Repeat the assessment with other household or workplace traffic active, and calculate each outbound copy separately if using backup ingestion or multiple destinations.

What to check with an Indian ISP

The bitrate arithmetic is the same in India as elsewhere, but the usable upload rate, congestion, data cap, metering, and service terms depend on the address and provider. No single Indian broadband plan can be called sufficient without those specifics. Before choosing a plan, confirm:
