Estimate a continuous YouTube stream’s upload use by multiplying its sustained total bitrate by its run time: at R Mbps, plan on about R × 10.8 decimal GB per day, or R × 324 decimal GB per 30 days. For example, a sustained 6 Mbps stream uses an estimated 64.8 GB per day and 1,944 GB (1.944 TB) in 30 days. These are calculated estimates for data sent from your encoder to YouTube—not measurements of audience viewing traffic.

What “bandwidth” means for a 24/7 stream

Bandwidth can mean the rate of data moving at a given moment or the total volume transferred over time. For this calculation, the relevant rate is your stream’s sustained upload bitrate, measured in megabits per second (Mbps). The resulting total is data volume, expressed here in decimal gigabytes (GB) and terabytes (TB), where 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes and 1 TB is 1,000 GB.

  • Upload rate: the encoded stream sent from your computer or streaming service to YouTube, in Mbps.
  • Transferred data: the accumulated upload over a day or month, in GB or TB.
  • Viewer delivery: the video data YouTube sends to viewers. It is separate from your upload estimate.

YouTube says it automatically transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats for viewers using different devices and networks. Therefore, the creator’s upload bitrate does not tell you the total traffic YouTube delivers to your audience. Do not multiply your upload estimate by the number of viewers. YouTube’s live encoder settings explain its ingestion recommendations and transcoding.

Use the formula

For a sustained total stream bitrate of R Mbps:

  • Per day: R × 10.8 decimal GB
  • Per 30 days: R × 324 decimal GB

The calculation is bitrate × seconds ÷ 8 to convert bits to bytes, then divide by 1,000,000,000 to get decimal GB. One day is 86,400 seconds; 30 days is 2,592,000 seconds. The result scales directly: double the bitrate or the run time, and the estimated upload volume doubles.

Estimated upload use at common bitrates

Every figure below is an arithmetic estimate from the formula, not a published measurement. The monthly column uses exactly 30 days; an actual calendar month may be shorter or longer.

Sustained total bitrate Approx. per day Approx. per 30 days
1 Mbps 10.8 GB 324 GB
4 Mbps 43.2 GB 1,296 GB (1.296 TB)
6 Mbps 64.8 GB 1,944 GB (1.944 TB)
10 Mbps 108 GB 3,240 GB (3.24 TB)

As one example, YouTube lists 6 Mbps as its recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p at 60 frames per second. That is an example setting in YouTube’s encoder table, not a special recommendation for ambient audio or for every 24/7 channel. Check YouTube’s current table for recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate.

Find the bitrate to plug in

Use the total bitrate if your encoder shows it

Look in your encoder’s output or stream settings for a total bitrate. If it reports audio and video separately, add the two values once. For example, a 5 Mbps video setting and a 0.16 Mbps audio setting give a nominal total of 5.16 Mbps. Do not add audio again if the displayed total already includes it.

Use the actual settings, not resolution alone

Resolution does not determine data use by itself. YouTube’s published recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate; your configured bitrate is the direct input to the estimate. Its current guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, and AV1 options, recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds). Consult the YouTube Help page when choosing or checking encoder settings; the table can change.

Ambient channels do not have a special 24/7 bitrate established in the cited YouTube guidance. Choose settings that produce acceptable video and audio for your channel, then calculate from the bitrate actually configured. A mostly static scene may make lower settings worth testing, but there is no supported universal “best” bitrate for ambient content.

Account for variable bitrate and real network totals

The formula assumes a sustained average rate. If your encoder uses variable bitrate (VBR), use a representative measured average for an estimate or a conservative high estimate for planning. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health. For an ambient channel, test the actual loop, sound, and visuals you intend to broadcast.

A network meter may show more than the simple estimate because of protocol overhead, reconnects, restarts, or an additional backup transmission. The cited official guidance does not establish a universal percentage to add, so do not apply a blanket overhead factor. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents primary and backup ingestion addresses; count extra upload only if your setup actually sends a separate backup feed. The API documentation also describes stream status and health fields.

Codec and quality choices

Codec, resolution, frame rate, and chosen bitrate affect the setting you use—and therefore the calculated total. Use YouTube’s encoder table for supported options and recommendations rather than assuming that a particular resolution has one fixed data cost.

YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance says HEVC generally provides 25% to 50% more compression than H.264 at the same video quality. That qualified statement applies to the HLS guidance; it is not a guarantee that switching codecs will reduce your own observed upload by a fixed amount. Actual results depend on the encoding and the quality target. Read YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance before treating that range as relevant to your setup.

Check upload capacity and any data cap separately

The estimated GB total helps you understand volume over time; it does not tell you whether your connection can sustain the upload rate. Your connection needs enough sustained upload capacity for the configured bitrate. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health, but the cited guidance does not prescribe a universal safety-margin percentage for every connection.

Also distinguish an ISP’s upload-speed capacity, measured as a rate such as Mbps, from a monthly data allowance, measured as a volume such as GB. A connection can have ample speed and still be subject to a data cap. Check your plan’s allowance and how it counts continuous upstream traffic; no general allowance or ISP cost applies to every location.
