To buy gold jewellery safely, check the hallmark using the official system for the country where you are buying, verify the seller and sales channel, and get an itemized invoice you can keep. Hallmark rules differ by country: the UK and India use different marks and verification routes, so treat the checks below as separate examples—not one universal checklist.
What should I check before buying gold jewellery?
- Identify the country and its hallmark system. A hallmark records precious-metal fineness after independent testing, but the required marks and verification method vary by jurisdiction.
- Read the fineness mark. It states the metal’s purity in the applicable system; appearance alone cannot establish what an item is made of.
- Check the seller and channel. Find out where an online seller is based, look for the hallmark information required in that market, and buy from a seller with a clear route for questions or complaints.
- Ask for a detailed invoice. Make sure the document identifies the item and its precious-metal content, then retain it with your purchase records.
- Use an official verification or testing route if uncertain. The available route depends on the country; India, for example, offers HUID verification and recognized-centre testing.
How do I check if gold jewellery is real?
Start with the official hallmark—not colour, shine, weight in your hand, or a seller’s verbal assurance. A hallmark is applied after independent testing and verification of the stated precious-metal fineness. It is useful evidence, but reading a mark with a magnifier only helps you see it; it does not prove that the mark itself is genuine or independently test the item.
UK: read the hallmark and check the seller
Know the three compulsory marks
UK practical guidance describes three compulsory hallmark components: the sponsor’s or maker’s mark, the metal fineness mark, and the Assay Office mark. A date letter may also appear, but it is optional. Fineness is expressed in parts per thousand: the UK guidance gives 375 as the fineness for 9-carat gold, meaning at least 375 parts gold in 1,000 under that standard. See the GOV.UK practical guidance summary.
Account for small-item exemptions
The same UK guidance states that gold items below the applicable minimum weight are exempt from compulsory hallmarking; its stated gold threshold is 1 gram. That means a small unhallmarked item is not automatically unlawful. The applicable exemption and any other statutory exception matter, so ask the seller to explain an absent mark rather than treating absence alone as proof of fraud.

Inspect the mark and the shop’s information
Hallmarks can be tiny. UK consumer guidance suggests asking the shop for a magnifying glass; a jeweller’s loupe can serve as a visibility aid, but cannot test the metal or authenticate the mark. In a shop, look for the displayed Dealer’s Notice and ask to inspect the hallmark. A trade-body membership sign may be a reputation signal, but it is not proof of fineness. GOV.UK’s consumer protection guidance also advises buying from a reputable seller.
Buying online in the UK
Hallmarking law applies to online sales too. UK consumer guidance says to find out where the seller is based; business guidance says online retail sites must prominently display explanatory hallmark information. Check that information before paying and keep the listing and order details. The official business compliance guidance explains the display requirement.

India: check the BIS mark, purity and HUID
Verify the HUID through the official route
BIS describes the HUID-era hallmark as three elements: the BIS logo, purity in caratage and fineness, and a six-digit alphanumeric HUID. BIS says the HUID system was introduced on 1 July 2021. Before buying, use the BIS CARE app’s “Verify HUID” feature to check authenticity, as described in the BIS general hallmarking FAQs and consumer protection information. This is the Indian verification route, not a UK hallmark check.

BIS says an authentic bill is necessary for disputes, misuse or complaint redressal. Its consumer FAQ specifies that the invoice should include the description of each article, net weight of precious metal, purity in carat and fineness, and hallmarking charges. Ask for these details item by item and keep the bill. See the BIS consumer hallmarking FAQs.

If purity is in doubt after purchase
BIS says consumers can have jewellery or a sample tested for a charge at any BIS-recognized Assaying & Hallmarking Centre and receive an assay report identifying the marked article. BIS also describes a compensation route if hallmarked jewellery is found below its stated purity. The result and any remedy depend on the current rules and the facts of the claim; check the official BIS consumer protection page for the applicable process.
What should be on a gold jewellery invoice?
Invoice requirements are not identical everywhere. For India, BIS specifically lists these details:
