Enterprise Products Partners L.P. (NYSE: EPD) says investors can buy its publicly traded common units through a brokerage firm; it does not offer a direct unit purchase program. Because EPD is treated as a partnership for U.S. tax purposes, unitholders generally receive a Schedule K-1 tax package rather than corporate-style Form 1099 reporting. The K-1 reports tax items allocated to you, which may differ from the cash distributions you received.

How to buy EPD units

EPD common units are listed on the New York Stock Exchange under ticker symbol EPD. Enterprise directs investors to buy through a brokerage firm, and says it does not offer a direct unit purchase program at this time. See the company’s investor FAQ for its stated purchase channel.

  1. Sign in to the brokerage account you use to trade listed securities.
  2. Search for EPD and confirm that the result is Enterprise Products Partners L.P. common units.
  3. Review your broker’s order-entry options, fees, and account disclosures, then decide whether and how to place an order.

Enterprise identifies EQ Shareowner Services as its transfer agent, but that is a different role from the brokerage route the company gives for buying units.

Why unitholders receive a Schedule K-1

Enterprise says it is a publicly traded partnership taxed as a partnership for U.S. tax purposes. In the general federal framework, a partnership files an information return and passes its tax items through to its partners, who report applicable items on their own returns. The IRS explains this framework in its partnership guidance.

What you are comparing Partnership treatment relevant to EPD Corporate-shareholder contrast
Tax form EPD unitholders receive a Schedule K-1 tax package. A corporation generally reports items such as dividends and interest to shareholders on Form 1099, as described in Enterprise’s K-1 tax information.
Taxable items and cash The K-1 reports your share of partnership tax items; those allocations are distinct from cash distributions. A dividend reported to a shareholder is not the same reporting arrangement as a partner’s pass-through allocation.

Where to find the latest announced K-1 package

Enterprise announced that its packages for the 2025 tax year would be available online beginning March 3, 2026, with mailing expected to begin on the same date. The announcement, published February 27, 2026, listed 800-599-9985 for support. See the 2025 package announcement and the company’s K-1 tax information page.

Those dates apply to the 2025 tax-year package, not to future packages or other tax years. For another year, check the issuer’s current K-1 information and support pages rather than assuming the same release date.

How K-1 income, distributions, and basis differ

A K-1 is not simply a statement of cash received. Partnership tax items may be allocated to you even when the amount is not equal to your cash distributions. The IRS’s Publication 541 describes partner basis adjustments and partnership reporting.

In general, a partner’s basis can increase with contributions and allocated income, and decrease with distributions, allocated losses, and certain nondeductible expenses. It can therefore change over time and should not be inferred from the original purchase cost or distributions alone. Keep the K-1 packages and records of purchases and distributions so the relevant history is available when preparing a return or evaluating a sale.

What to consider if you sell EPD units

A sale generally requires comparing the amount realized with adjusted basis, not just comparing sale proceeds with the original purchase price. Under partnership rules, some gain associated with unrealized receivables or inventory may be treated as ordinary income rather than capital gain. A partner’s share of liabilities and the sale information reported with the K-1 may also affect the calculation. The IRS discusses these rules in Publication 541 and the 2025 Partner’s Instructions for Schedule K-1.

Use the instructions for the applicable tax year and your own purchase, distribution, K-1, and sale records. State tax treatment and an individual holder’s basis or gain character depend on that holder’s circumstances; a tax professional familiar with publicly traded partnerships can help with a complex K-1 or disposition.

Note for investors outside the United States

Enterprise’s foreign-holder guidance is specifically for non-U.S. investors. It says foreign unitholders selling EPD units should generally expect broker withholding of 10% of the amount realized, and describes withholding on distributions to non-U.S. investors at the maximum applicable U.S. tax rate. These are issuer statements about foreign holders, not general rules for U.S. investors. Non-U.S. holders should check the company’s current K-1 tax information and obtain advice for their circumstances.
