To buy Bitcoin and hold it yourself, choose a purchase service available where you live, secure your account, set up a wallet you control, back it up using that wallet’s instructions, then withdraw Bitcoin to its receiving address. Self-custody gives you control of the keys—but also makes you responsible for protecting the wallet and recovery information. A lost recovery phrase or other required backup can mean permanent loss.
Before buying, decide whether Bitcoin’s risks are acceptable
Bitcoin’s price can change unpredictably over short periods, and Bitcoin.org describes it as a high-risk asset. Do not treat it as a source of guaranteed returns or put money you need for essential expenses at risk. The Bitcoin network does not make a transaction private: transactions are recorded publicly, so Bitcoin should not be described as anonymous. (Bitcoin.org, “Some things you need to know.”)
There is also a meaningful difference between buying Bitcoin and controlling it. If a service holds the keys, you depend on that service’s security and its ability and willingness to honor withdrawals. With self-custody, you control the keys, but you must protect both your wallet and the information needed to recover it. Bitcoin.org warns that a permanently lost self-custody wallet cannot be recovered by developers, miners, wallet providers, or exchanges. (Bitcoin.org, “Some things you need to know” and wallet security guidance.)
How to choose a service to buy Bitcoin
Use a purchase service that is available in your location and independently verify that you are using its official site or app. The reviewed guidance warns about fake exchanges, including services that advertise unusually competitive prices; a search result, ad, or direct message is not proof that a service is legitimate. Bitcoin.org’s buy page notes that its purchase widget is provided by MoonPay and is not associated with Bitcoin.org. That disclosure is not an endorsement, and it does not establish availability or suitability in every location.

Before sending money or completing a purchase, check the service’s identity, current fees, withdrawal terms, account-security options, and whether it allows withdrawals to a wallet whose keys you control. Availability, terms, licensing, consumer protections, and tax treatment vary by jurisdiction; Bitcoin.org’s general guidance does not settle those local questions.
Protect the purchase account with a unique, strong password and multifactor authentication if the service offers it. Keep access to the email address or other account-recovery method secure as well. These steps reduce account risk, but they do not replace taking control of your Bitcoin through a wallet withdrawal. (Bitcoin.org, wallet security guidance.)

Which kind of self-custody wallet should you use?
Wallet categories involve trade-offs rather than a universal best choice. A wallet stores or manages the keys used to control Bitcoin; the recovery method and supported features depend on the wallet. Compare control, exposure to internet-connected devices, everyday usability, backup and recovery, supported address and network features, privacy, and fees before choosing. Bitcoin.org’s wallet chooser distinguishes mobile, desktop, and hardware options and provides selection criteria, but does not establish that one brand suits everyone.
| Wallet type | Typical fit | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | Convenient everyday access and spending | The phone can be lost, compromised, or unavailable; an app can also be removed from an app marketplace. Back up according to the wallet’s instructions. |
| Desktop | People who want wallet control on a computer | Computers can be exposed to malware. Secure the device and wallet, and keep the required recovery information safe. |
| Hardware | People considering offline key storage, including for savings | It is less convenient for mobile use and still depends on protecting its recovery information. Buy from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller. |
No category eliminates backup responsibilities. A hardware device is not a substitute for safely storing the recovery information needed if the device is lost or fails. (Bitcoin.org, wallet chooser and wallet security guidance.)

Set up the wallet and protect its recovery information
- Get the wallet through its official source. Confirm that the app or device comes from the wallet maker or an authorized source. Be wary of counterfeit hardware wallets: a device could arrive with a recovery phrase already known to an attacker or with altered firmware. (Bitcoin.org, scam guidance.)
- Follow the wallet’s own setup process. Wallets can use different backup and recovery methods, so do not assume every wallet works the same way. For a hardware wallet, generate the recovery phrase yourself during first-time setup; do not use a phrase supplied with the device. (Bitcoin.org, scam guidance and wallet security guidance.)
- Make the backup before transferring a meaningful amount. Follow the wallet’s official instructions for backing up the whole wallet and for restoring it. Keep recovery details private and offline, and consider secure backups in more than one physical place where appropriate. A backup should remain protected from theft, loss, and damage.
- Keep the recovery information secret. Never disclose a recovery phrase or private key to someone claiming to be support. A purported support agent should not need it. Do not enter it into a site or app reached through an unsolicited message.
Bitcoin.org says keeping wallet software current provides important stability and security fixes. Update through the wallet maker’s official channel, and periodically confirm that your backup can restore the wallet using the maker’s safe recovery process. (Bitcoin.org, wallet security guidance.)
Withdraw Bitcoin carefully and verify the transfer
- Open the receiving wallet and obtain its Bitcoin receiving address. Use the wallet’s own receive function and make sure the address is for the intended asset and network.
- Enter that address and the amount in the purchase service’s withdrawal flow. Compare the complete destination address—not just its first or last characters—with the address shown by your wallet. Address-poisoning scams place lookalike addresses in transaction history, so selecting a familiar-looking past address without checking it can send funds to the wrong destination. (Bitcoin.org, scam guidance.)
- Review the amount and destination before confirming. For a larger transfer, a small test transfer first is a cautious precaution, not a guarantee against every error. Consider any applicable service and network fees when reviewing what will arrive.
- Wait for confirmations appropriate to the transfer’s value and risk. Confidence in a transaction increases as it receives confirmations. Bitcoin payments do not have a central authority that can reverse a mistake: as Bitcoin.org puts it, “Bitcoin has no central authority to reverse a mistake.” Check the transaction details and destination before sending. (Bitcoin.org, “Some things you need to know.”)
Because a mistaken or fraudulent payment may not be reversible through a central authority, do not rush a withdrawal because of pressure from a seller, support agent, or online contact.

Recognize common scams around buying and self-custody
- Fake exchanges: Treat unusually attractive prices or urgent offers as a reason to verify the service independently. Do not rely only on ads, search placement, or messages.
- Counterfeit hardware wallets: Purchase from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller, inspect packaging, and generate the recovery phrase yourself during setup.
- Fake support: Do not give a recovery phrase or private key to anyone, and be wary of requests for remote access to your device.
- Phishing and address poisoning: Avoid entering recovery details on a page reached through an unsolicited link, and verify every character of a withdrawal address rather than checking only a prefix or suffix.
These examples are documented in Bitcoin.org’s scam guidance. They target different points in the process, so protecting an exchange account alone is not enough: the wallet setup, backup, and withdrawal each need careful checks.
