You can buy Alibaba exposure through a brokerage account that supports either its NYSE-listed BABA American depositary shares (ADSs) or its ordinary shares on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The Hong Kong market has two Alibaba trading counters: 9988 for HKD trading and 89988 for RMB trading. The right route depends on the markets and currencies your broker supports, its fees, and the order and custody arrangements it offers—not on the ticker price alone.
Choose the Alibaba trading line your broker supports
| Trading line | What it represents | Trading currency | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| BABA (NYSE) | American depositary shares; one ADS represents eight Alibaba ordinary shares. | USD | Whether your broker offers NYSE-listed securities and what commissions, custody charges, and currency-conversion costs apply. |
| 9988 (Hong Kong Stock Exchange) | Alibaba ordinary shares on the HKD counter. | HKD | Whether your broker offers this specific SEHK counter and how it handles HKD funding and conversion. |
| 89988 (Hong Kong Stock Exchange) | Alibaba ordinary shares on the RMB counter. | RMB | Whether your broker supports this counter and the relevant RMB funding and settlement arrangements. |
Alibaba describes BABA ADSs and its Hong Kong ordinary shares as fungible and says they can be converted in either direction. The company says electronic conversion generally takes two business days under normal circumstances; this is not a guaranteed investor-specific processing time. Ask your broker about eligibility, its conversion process, fees, and any restrictions. Alibaba investor information FAQs
How to buy through a brokerage account
- Check market access. In your broker’s market or security search, confirm it supports NYSE securities for BABA or Hong Kong Stock Exchange securities for the exact counter you want: 9988 or 89988.
- Check account and currency requirements. Confirm whether your account can hold or trade the security, which currency it will debit, and any foreign-exchange, custody, transaction, or market-specific charges. Fees and access depend on the broker and your jurisdiction.
- Find the exact security. Search by ticker and exchange rather than relying on the company name alone. Verify that the result is BABA on the NYSE, or the intended Alibaba Hong Kong counter.
- Review the order details. Check the quoted currency, order type, quantity, estimated total cost, and the market’s trading session before submitting. Trading hours and conditions differ between New York and Hong Kong.
- Confirm the trade and records. After placing an order, check the broker’s confirmation for the executed security, quantity, price, currency, and fees.
Compare the routes on the factors that affect your trade
A BABA ADS and a Hong Kong ordinary share are not interchangeable ticker quotes. Because one ADS represents eight ordinary shares, a meaningful price comparison needs to account for that ratio and convert the quoted amounts into the same currency. The quotes can also differ because the securities trade on different venues and may face different trading conditions.
- Broker access: Verify that the broker offers the market and exact counter; availability is not universal.
- Costs: Compare current commissions and other broker charges, as well as any currency-conversion costs. The issuer does not establish a universal broker fee.
- Currency: BABA trades in USD, while 9988 is the HKD counter and 89988 the RMB counter. Consider the currency your broker debits and any conversion needed to fund the purchase.
- Trading conditions: NYSE and Hong Kong differ in trading hours, liquidity, listing and trading rules, transaction costs, and investor bases. These differences do not establish that one route is always more liquid or cheaper.
- Conversion: Although conversion between ADSs and Hong Kong ordinary shares is possible, it involves an operational process. Confirm the broker’s procedure, timing, and costs before relying on conversion to move between markets.
- Tax and investor rules: Outcomes depend on your residence, account, and transaction. Check local tax guidance and your broker’s current documentation rather than assuming the two routes receive identical treatment.
Understand the risks attached to either route
Buying 9988 rather than BABA does not remove Alibaba’s business, issuer, China-related, or market risks. Alibaba’s fiscal 2026 Form 20-F, filed May 20, 2026 for the year ended March 31, 2026, describes risks that include possible limits on ADS holders’ voting, transfer, and distribution rights; effects on liquidity or price and possible delays related to ADS/share exchanges; and uncertainty about Hong Kong stamp duty treatment of ADS trading or conversion.

The filing also discusses possible U.S. delisting under the Holding Foreign Companies Accountable Act if the required conditions concerning complete PCAOB inspection or investigation of the auditor are unmet for the specified period. This is a disclosed risk, not a prediction that delisting will happen. The filing covers broader business and People’s Republic of China-related risks as well. Alibaba announced the filing on May 20, 2026.
