Before you travel, confirm the exact card and store, wait for the retailer’s pickup-ready notice, and check who must pay and what identification to bring. For some RTX 5090 purchases, Micro Center has reportedly asked buyers to complete a declaration and show government-issued photo ID; that is a recently reported, limited practice—not a published nationwide rule for all graphics cards.

What the reported RTX 5090 restriction means

Reports published October 2 and 3, 2026 describe a Micro Center declaration connected to certain NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 purchases. Tom’s Hardware reported that a customer was asked for a legal name, residential or business address, government-issued photo ID, phone number and email, the actual end user if different, installation location, and intended end use. The report reproduces the declaration’s statement: “Micro Center will not sell this product to a purchaser who intends to export, reexport, resell, transfer, or otherwise cause it to leave the United States, regardless of destination.” Tom’s Hardware’s October 2 report says the form came from a customer post.

TechRadar’s October 3 report describes a documented transaction involving a PowerSpec AI90 workstation with an RTX 5090 at Micro Center’s Tustin, California store, and relays a separate customer’s report of a similar form in Columbus, Ohio. Those reports do not establish that every store or every RTX 5090 purchase is subject to the form. They describe a retailer declaration, not an export-control law or a published nationwide policy. Call the specific store about the exact SKU or system before making the trip.

Micro Center: prepare for pickup

  1. Choose the exact store and item. Check whether the specific product can be reserved. An in-stock display does not guarantee a reservation; some items are first come, first served.
  2. Place the pickup order and wait for the ready message. Use “18 Minute Pickup” where offered, but do not leave until Micro Center sends the ready email or text.
  3. Bring the confirmation and photo ID. If the store has told you a model-specific declaration applies, ask what information and documents are required for that exact purchase.
  4. Pay at the store. Micro Center says in-store pickup cannot be prepaid. Its payment guidance says state-issued ID may be requested for credit or debit card purchases; listed in-store options include Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, and cash.
  5. Collect within three days. Micro Center says an uncollected pickup order is automatically canceled and returned to inventory.

If another person will collect the order, give them the confirmation. Micro Center says the pickup person must bring their own ID and pay with their own card.

Best Buy: prepare for pickup

  1. Select Store Pickup at checkout. If someone else will collect the item, enter that person as the pickup contact during checkout.
  2. Wait for the separate “Ready for pickup” email. An order confirmation alone is not the ready notice.
  3. Bring government-issued photo ID and the order number. The ID must match the buyer or the person named for pickup.
  4. Check the payment status. Best Buy says it authorizes an online order when placed and charges it when shipped or ready for pickup.
  5. Collect within five days. Best Buy says it will cancel and refund an uncollected pickup order after five days; check order details for an extension option.

Best Buy lists major cards, Apple Pay, cash, checks, PayPal, and Best Buy payment products among its in-store payment methods. Purchase limits can apply per person, household, or order.
