The best clothes dryer for your home is one that fits your space and hookups, handles your usual loads, and makes sense for your budget to buy and run. Start by checking installation requirements—not by choosing a brand. Then compare dryer type, energy use, capacity, moisture-sensing controls, and the full cost of ownership.
1. Check your space, hookups, and venting first
These constraints can rule out a dryer before features or price matter. Measure the laundry area and the route the appliance must travel to reach it. Check the available width, height, and depth, as well as door swing, required clearances, and access around the unit.
- Measure the installation space: compare your measurements with the exact model’s installation manual, including clearances and door-swing needs.
- Identify the hookup: note whether you have a gas or electric connection and check the outlet and circuit details. Do not assume a replacement dryer uses the same connection just because the old one fit.
- Check venting: determine whether your installation can support an exhaust vent or requires a ventless design. Confirm the exact model’s requirements in its installation manual rather than relying on a category label.
- Plan delivery access: measure doorways, stairs, hallways, and turns along the route to the laundry space.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) defines electric and gas clothes dryers as tumble-drum appliances that circulate forced air; the heat source distinguishes the two categories. A model’s manual—not a general description of its type—sets the requirements for your installation. DOE explains clothes dryer standards and test procedures.
2. Choose a dryer design that suits your home
Conventional electric, gas, and electric heat-pump dryers differ in heat source, installation needs, and energy use. Confirm compatibility first, then weigh the energy and purchase-cost tradeoffs that matter in your household.

Conventional electric dryers
These use electricity to heat air. Check the model’s required electrical connection and whether it needs an exhaust vent. Do not assume all electric dryers share the same installation requirements.
Gas dryers
These use gas as the heat source, so the home must have a compatible gas connection as well as any required electrical supply and venting. Verify the complete hookup requirements in the installation manual before choosing one.

Electric heat-pump dryers
Heat-pump dryers can be worth considering if lower energy use is a priority and the model’s cost and installation requirements work for your home. DOE says ENERGY STAR-certified heat-pump dryers can save 20–60% more energy than conventional clothes dryers; actual savings vary with the specific model and how it is used. DOE’s description of an Oak Ridge National Laboratory research project also identifies higher initial cost, possible lower capacity, and longer cycle time as challenges in that project context—not universal traits of every current model. The project page notes that heat-pump technology avoids the moisture-disposal issue associated with conventional electric dryers. DOE’s clothes dryer guidance and its heat-pump dryer project summary provide further context.

3. Compare energy use without assuming a fixed bill reduction
ENERGY STAR certification is a useful efficiency screen, but it does not tell you exactly how much a particular household will save. DOE says ENERGY STAR clothes dryers use 20% less energy than conventional models. It separately says ENERGY STAR-certified heat-pump dryers can save 20–60% more energy than conventional clothes dryers. These comparisons are not a promise of a specific reduction in your bill: usage, loads, settings, and the model all affect results.

For the exact dryer you are considering, check its energy information and certification, then compare that information with your expected use. If you want to estimate running cost, use the model-specific energy figure and your electricity or gas rates; a generic savings percentage cannot replace those inputs.
4. Match capacity and cycle options to your routine
Think about the size of your usual loads and how often you do laundry. Compare the capacity and cycle options listed for the exact models you are considering. There is no single capacity target that fits every household, and the figures here do not establish current model capacities or drying-speed rankings.

5. Prioritize moisture sensing and useful controls
Look for an automatic moisture sensor that stops a cycle when clothes are dry. DOE recommends this feature because it can reduce unnecessary energy use and over-drying wear. Verify that the exact model has moisture sensing; do not assume it is included in every dryer or every cycle.

Compare purchase price alongside installation, expected operating costs, warranty, and any delivery or removal charges. A more efficient dryer may cost more upfront, so whether it is worthwhile depends on the specific model and your use. Check the seller’s current warranty, delivery and installation terms, and return policy before buying.
In the United States, DOE lists potential rebates of up to $840 for qualifying ENERGY STAR-certified electric heat-pump dryers under the High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebate program. A separate Home Owner Managing Energy Savings program may provide up to $8,000 for qualifying projects; that is not necessarily a stand-alone dryer rebate. These are program maximums, not guaranteed discounts. Confirm current funding, eligibility, and application details with the state or local program administrator before factoring an incentive into your budget. DOE’s clothes dryer guidance describes these potential amounts.

DOE’s consumer standards page says compliance with the amended clothes dryer standards is required on March 1, 2028. A separate DOE announcement dated July 2, 2026 describes a proposal to revise its appliance-standards process rule; it does not announce a final dryer-specific change to that compliance date.
