Buy only after you have checked the exact card and seller, read the return and claim rules that apply to that listing, and confirmed you can pay through the marketplace’s protected checkout. A listing on a marketplace does not mean the marketplace is the seller—and protection can depend on the seller, item, payment route, country, and claim deadline.
Before you buy, verify the listing and the seller
Search the exact GPU model and board-partner variant, not just the product family. Compare the card’s condition, included accessories, total price, shipping cost, seller, and return terms. Two listings for the same GPU name may differ substantially in what is being sold and what recourse you have.
- Look for photos of the actual card. Several clear views help you assess visible condition and whether the seller appears to have the item. Stock images alone cannot establish either.
- Read the condition and included-items description carefully. Check whether the card is new, used, or refurbished, and whether the listing specifies missing accessories, damage, repairs, or other limitations.
- Review recent feedback and seller history. Do not rely on a star rating alone. Ask specific questions about operation, damage, repairs, included parts, and returns, and keep the answers in the marketplace’s message system.
- Compare the full price. A steep discount on an expensive or hard-to-find card is a reason to pause, not proof of fraud. Short listings, suspicious discounts, scarce products offered in unusual quantity, and pressure to leave the platform are also warning signs identified by eBay’s seller-fraud guidance.
- Check the remedy before checkout. Note the return window, who pays return shipping, the marketplace’s claim route, and the applicable deadline for this listing and your country.
The Federal Trade Commission explains that marketplace policies differ: some leave payment, delivery, and disputes to buyers and sellers, while others offer processes for certain problems. It advises buyers to confirm protection applies to the specific item and seller and to watch for short claim windows. Its guidance puts the key checks plainly: “Before you buy from any online marketplace, check the seller’s rules about refunds and returns, see who can help if you have a problem, and make sure they let you pay with a safe payment method.” — Federal Trade Commission, Buying From an Online Marketplace (November 2024).

Use the marketplace’s own checkout and an eligible, traceable payment method. Do not send money directly to a seller who asks you to move the transaction to email, text, or another site. The FTC warns that off-platform payment can remove marketplace protection; eBay says purchases made off eBay are not covered by its Money Back Guarantee. Requests for wire transfers, prepaid cards, or cryptocurrency are strong reasons to stop.

Keep questions, answers, payment, and order details in the official transaction record. Before paying, read the current policy for the marketplace and the specific purchase: eligibility, exclusions, and deadlines can vary or change, and duplicate claims may affect a case.
Check who sells and who ships
On Amazon, the “Sold by” and “Ships from” labels answer different questions. Amazon’s third-party seller help explains that a third-party business may sell a card while Amazon fulfills the order. Fulfillment by Amazon does not, by itself, identify Amazon as the seller or establish the card’s condition.

An order may qualify for an A-to-z claim only under the applicable terms. Amazon Payments’ A-to-z Guarantee policy sets conditions and deadlines; for a received item that is damaged, defective, or materially different, it includes a 14-day period to contact the seller. Confirm the policy, eligibility, and current timing that apply to your order rather than assuming every Amazon purchase has the same remedy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a used card, assess condition separately from trust
If the arrangement allows it, test the card under an appropriate workload before buying or promptly after delivery. A successful test is a limited condition check: it does not establish ownership, prove future reliability, or guarantee a remedy if a later problem arises. Agree in writing on the card’s condition and what is included, and keep the transaction on a protected channel.

TechRadar’s Monica J. White reported on June 29, 2025, examples involving listings for photographs instead of cards, packages containing unrelated items, and cards stripped of critical components. The report recommends checking return terms, using trusted sellers and protected payment channels, and recording an unboxing. These are reported cases and practical precautions, not a measured scam rate or proof that such cases are common.

- Save the evidence. Keep the order page, listing description and photos, seller messages, tracking details, and package condition. Note model or serial labels where present.
- Record the opening if practical. A continuous video showing the shipping label, sealed parcel, and contents can help document what arrived. It is evidence, not a guarantee that a marketplace will decide in your favor.
- Compare the contents with the listing. Check the model and included parts, and inspect for visible damage.
- Report problems through the marketplace promptly. If the card is missing, damaged, nonfunctional, or materially different from the description, contact the seller through the platform and follow its formal dispute or claim process before the applicable deadline.
For platform-specific rules, consult FTC marketplace guidance, eBay’s advice on avoiding seller fraud and its Money Back Guarantee policy, or Amazon’s third-party seller help and A-to-z terms. Read the terms that apply to your transaction and region before relying on a particular protection.
