Keep HTTP status separate from capture success: a 404 or 500 page can still render and be captured, while a DNS error or timeout may prevent a screenshot entirely.
What to record for each URL
A useful batch log lets you answer two separate questions: what HTTP response did the browser receive, and did the screenshot operation complete? Record the input URL and final URL separately so redirects remain visible. Include the response status when available, screenshot path, capture result, and an error category or message.
- input_url: The exact URL from your source list.
- final_url: The URL after navigation and redirects, when a page response exists.
- http_status: The main document’s status code, or blank when no response was received.
- capture_status: For example,
successorfailed. - screenshot_path: The saved image filename, if created.
- error_type and error: A category and diagnostic message for navigation, timeout, invalid URL, or screenshot failures.
This is a practical logging schema, not a field set automatically produced by every screenshot tool. A screenshot alone does not prove the page returned HTTP 200: error pages may render normally.
Capture a URL list with Playwright
Playwright’s screenshot API can save a page to a file and supports full-page capture with fullPage. The script below reads URLs from a text file, takes a viewport or full-page PNG, and appends each result to a CSV immediately so completed rows remain available if the batch stops. 1. Install the requirements
Use Node.js and install Playwright in a new project:

2. Create the input list
Save one URL per line in urls.txt, for example:

Save this as bulk-screenshot.mjs. It records the main navigation response status, including HTTP error statuses, while treating a missing response or a thrown navigation error as a separate outcome. It continues after individual URL failures.

The filename includes a sequence number as well as a sanitized host and path, so duplicate paths do not overwrite each other. The script appends rather than replacing its log; when intentionally starting a fresh run, delete or rename results.csv first. If a screenshot operation fails after navigation succeeded, the HTTP status remains in the log when Playwright returned a response.

Choose capture and failure policies deliberately
HTTP status is not capture status
Decide in advance whether your batch should continue after 3xx, 4xx, or 5xx responses. For most audit workflows, log the returned code and still screenshot any page that rendered. A 404 screenshot may be exactly what you need to inspect. Do not make an HTTP error status automatically abort the batch unless that is your explicit policy.
Navigation failures are different
A DNS failure, refused connection, invalid URL, or timeout can leave http_status blank because no main-document response was received. Log the exception and continue. A browser crash is a separate operational failure; the script’s per-URL catch will record URL-level errors, but a browser process failure can prevent later iterations from completing.

Viewport or full page
- Viewport: A consistent first-screen layout snapshot; smaller files and typically quicker captures.
- Full page: The full scrollable page, useful for long-page review. Large documents can take longer and produce larger images.
Dynamic applications may need an explicit readiness condition rather than a fixed delay. Playwright’s screenshot API and page navigation options are documented at playwright.dev/docs/screenshots; test a few representative pages to determine whether the page is ready at the chosen capture point. Lazy images, consent overlays, authentication, and client-side rendering can all change what appears in a capture.
Command-line and hosted alternatives
shot-scraper for command-line batches
shot-scraper’s documentation describes multi-URL screenshots and a --fail-on-error option. Its batch workflow may suit scheduled command-line jobs when its output and error behavior meet your logging needs. For larger HAR output, the documentation advises using HAR ZIP output rather than an oversized JSON HAR that could cause Playwright to crash.

Troubleshooting
The status is blank
Blank status means the script did not receive a main-document response from page.goto. Check the logged exception for DNS, connection, URL-format, or timeout details. It is not equivalent to HTTP 200 or proof that the site is offline for everyone.

A 4xx or 5xx response still has an image
That is expected when the server returned an error page that the browser could render. Keep the status code and capture result in separate columns; do not discard the screenshot merely because the status is not 2xx.
Images or page sections are missing
The page may load content after the navigation event or defer images until scrolling. Try full-page mode, inspect the page’s readiness behavior, and test a more specific wait condition for the site. There is no universally correct delay for every website.
The batch stops unexpectedly
Because each row is appended after its URL is processed, inspect results.csv to identify completed entries. Check whether the browser process ended, the machine ran out of resources, or a filesystem error prevented a screenshot or log write. Rerun only missing URLs or use a new output directory to preserve earlier captures.

Use a sequence number in every filename, as in the example, rather than relying on the URL path alone. Keep the original URL in the CSV even when the path is sanitized for a filename.
Reliability, performance, and cost
A self-managed Playwright batch gives you control over browser setup, navigation, readiness, and the exact fields in your log; you also maintain the runtime and storage yourself. Capture one page at a time in the example for straightforward error attribution and lower resource pressure. Parallel tabs can improve throughput, but increase memory and network load and make rate limits or site protections more likely; add concurrency only after testing against the sites you are authorized to capture.
There is no universal per-page runtime or safe batch size: page weight, network, browser resources, and site behavior vary. For repeatable comparisons, keep the browser version, viewport, wait policy, and capture mode consistent, and retain logs and screenshots together. For hosted services, verify current limits, status semantics, retention, authentication support, and pricing directly before migrating a workflow.
