To bulk screenshot Indian news article URLs, first decide whether your archive needs a visual image for each page, a replayable web capture, or both. A PNG, JPEG, or WebP records how a page rendered at a particular time and viewport; WARC/WACZ captures preserve page resources for later replay. They are different deliverables, so a WARC is not a substitute for a required screenshot.
For a small, curated set, ArchiveWeb.page offers interactive browser capture and WARC/WACZ export. For automated whole-site crawling, Webrecorder positions Browsertrix as the relevant route, but verify that its current configuration accepts your URL list and produces the outputs you need. Choose the record your archive needs
Screenshot: a visual record
A screenshot is a rendered image of a page at a particular capture time and viewport. It is useful as visual evidence, but by itself it does not preserve the page’s navigable resources for later replay. If each article must be delivered as an image, plan a screenshot step for each URL and record its dimensions and viewport.
WARC/WACZ: a replayable web capture
WARC and WACZ are web-archive formats used to retain captured page resources for replay. Webrecorder describes ArchiveWeb.page as exporting WARC and WACZ, and Browsertrix as producing WACZ downloads that can be unpacked to reveal WARC files. ReplayWeb.page is a viewer for WARC/WACZ captures. A capture can be replayed, but that does not make it a screenshot file.

When to keep both
If the archive needs both quick visual review and future replay, save an image and a WARC/WACZ capture as separate outputs. The tools’ documentation does not establish that either automatically creates a PNG for every captured URL.

ArchiveWeb.page for hands-on capture
Webrecorder presents ArchiveWeb.page as an interactive browser-based archiving tool, available as a Chromium extension and a standalone desktop application. Its guide describes starting a session, navigating to a target, and clicking assets, links, or pages to capture. A status banner indicates capture activity: green means continue browsing, while yellow means URLs are pending and you should wait. Its Autopilot behavior handles scrolling or interaction on a single page, including complex pages such as infinite-scroll sites; it is not documented as a general multi-URL bulk queue. This approach suits a small, curated selection or a pilot where an archivist needs to inspect page behavior. There is no substantiated throughput figure, so estimate operator time with a trial rather than assuming a batch rate.

Browsertrix for automated crawling
Webrecorder positions Browsertrix as an automated whole-site crawler, with captured content downloaded as WACZ. The available product information does not establish arbitrary URL-list import, per-article PNG output, access under a particular plan, or success across all Indian publishers. Check the current Browsertrix documentation and run a pilot with the exact seed-list workflow and crawl scope before relying on it for a defined batch.
A repeatable bulk-capture workflow
- Normalize the input. Deduplicate URLs while retaining each original URL. Keep one record per requested article so redirects, failures, and duplicate inputs remain auditable.
- Specify the deliverable. Mark each job as screenshot, replayable WARC/WACZ, or both. Do not substitute an archive file when the requirement calls for an image.
- Pilot representative pages. Try URLs from several publishers, languages, and page types. Inspect desktop and mobile layouts, consent overlays, paywalls or login requirements, lazy-loaded images, and redirects. These are checks to perform, not established behaviors of any particular Indian news site.
- Select a capture mode. Use ArchiveWeb.page when an operator should inspect and interact with individual pages. Evaluate Browsertrix for automated crawling, first confirming that its current setup accepts the intended seeds and scope.
- Save an outcome for every URL. Record success, redirected, blocked, incomplete, or error; include the capture time in UTC, final URL, and output path. These are recommended tracking fields, not a claim that the products generate a particular manifest.
- Run a separate screenshot step if images are required. Use a browser-automation screenshot method with a fixed viewport and recorded capture time. Validate the chosen tool’s current behavior independently; the available product documentation here does not verify a specific automation vendor or its feature details.
- Export and retain archives when replay matters. Inspect WARC/WACZ files with ReplayWeb.page and back them up under your organization’s retention and access policy.
- Quality-check a sample. Compare saved screenshots or replayed captures against the live pages. A crawl reporting completion alone does not prove every requested article is complete.
Keep per-URL metadata with the files
A simple CSV or database row per requested article can make a batch reviewable. The following fields are workflow recommendations; they are not documented automatic outputs of ArchiveWeb.page or Browsertrix.

Limits and failure cases to plan for
- Consent overlays or popups: inspect whether they obscure the page and decide how the archive should represent that state. Do not assume a capture tool removes them.
- Paywalls or login requirements: a capture may not contain the article text visible to an authorized reader. Do not treat a screenshot or archive as proof that access restrictions were bypassed.
- Lazy-loaded or infinite-scroll content: inspect whether the desired article or assets loaded before capture. ArchiveWeb.page’s documented Autopilot is for interaction on a single page, not bulk automation.
- Redirects: retain both the requested and final URL so a changed address is visible in the record.
- Blocked, incomplete, or failed captures: mark the individual result and investigate it rather than silently counting the URL as complete.
- Unverified list ingestion: if the chosen setup cannot demonstrate how it accepts and scopes your URL list, do not assume it will process every row. Test the exact configuration before a production run.
Replay and retain the archive
ReplayWeb.page is intended for viewing WARC/WACZ archives and offers desktop versions. Webrecorder documents on-demand loading for WACZ when HTTP range requests are available. ArchiveWeb.page’s repository says captures are stored in browser storage using IndexedDB and that it uses Chrome’s debugging protocol to capture network traffic.
