WordPress’s built-in Convert to blocks action converts the content in one Classic block; it is not a site-wide bulk converter. To migrate many posts, use a plugin workflow or, for technical administrators, a WP-CLI process. Back up the site, test on staging, review what the tool will change, and convert a small representative batch before expanding.
Choose the conversion method that fits your site

The tools do not offer identical workflows or guarantees. A dashboard review-and-select interface may suit editors who want to inspect a target list; the 10up listing describes a command-line route for administrators comfortable with WP-CLI. Plugin support and capabilities can change, so check each current listing against your WordPress and PHP versions.
Prepare before converting
- Make a full backup. Back up the database and site files, and make sure you know how to restore them. Bulk Classic to Block explicitly warns that its conversion is irreversible; recovery options vary by tool.
- Clone the site to staging. Where possible, run the migration there first and confirm that the backup can be restored. Do not begin on the production site just because the plugin offers a bulk button.
- Review the migration target list. Use the selected tool’s scan or review screen. Check post types and statuses, and confirm that the proposed records are actually in scope. Bulk Classic to Block describes filters for both post type and status.
- Check compatibility notes. Confirm the plugin’s current WordPress and PHP support, and check any requirements for Gutenberg, custom post types, blocks, or the REST API that matter to your site.
- Choose representative test content. Include examples with images and captions, tables, embeds, shortcodes, custom formatting, and content generated by other plugins, if those appear on your site. These cases can behave differently during conversion; their inclusion is a precaution, not a guarantee that any tool supports them.
Run a controlled migration
For an individual Classic block
- Open the post or page in the WordPress editor.
- Select the Classic block and choose Convert to blocks from its toolbar.
- Inspect the resulting blocks before saving. Check formatting, embedded content, and any shortcodes or custom markup used in that block.
For a plugin-based bulk conversion
- On staging, install and configure the chosen plugin according to its current WordPress.org listing.
- Run its scan or review step, then check the target posts, pages, custom post types, and statuses before selecting anything.
- Convert a small batch containing the representative content you identified. Avoid converting the full site as the first test.
- Open the converted items in the editor and inspect their block structure. Then view the public pages and compare their rendering with the originals.
- If the test passes, continue in controlled batches and keep a record of which items were converted. If content is missing or renders incorrectly, stop; use the plugin’s documented revert procedure if available, or restore from your backup.
For the 10up WP-CLI workflow
The 10up plugin listing documents wp convert-to-blocks start as an iterative bulk-migration command. Run it only in an environment where you have already tested the plugin and can restore the database. Follow the plugin’s current instructions for installation and execution; the command alone does not establish that custom blocks or every site-specific content type will convert as intended.
What to inspect after each batch
- Editor structure: Confirm content is represented as expected blocks rather than unintended generic HTML or missing elements.
- Front-end appearance: Check the public page for layout, typography, images, captions, tables, embeds, and spacing.
- Shortcodes and plugin output: Verify that content from shortcodes or other plugins still works. A conversion into a Shortcode or HTML block does not by itself prove that the shortcode or markup renders correctly.
- Custom blocks and nested content: Confirm the blocks are available and supported in the site’s actual editor and plugin versions.
- Recovery path: Know whether your chosen tool supports a per-post revert, and retain a restorable backup regardless.
10up’s Convert to Blocks description says its approach “reduces risk as you are only altering database values for content that needs to be changed.” That is the plugin author’s rationale, not a guarantee that a migration is risk-free; staging and output checks remain important.

Can you convert every Classic post automatically?
Bulk tools can identify and process groups of content, but the available descriptions do not establish that every custom markup pattern, shortcode, plugin-generated element, or custom block will convert cleanly. The core toolbar action is limited to an individual Classic block, while bulk plugins differ in selection, parsing, and recovery features. Test the types of content your site actually uses, and make the decision to expand the migration only after reviewing both the editor and public output.
